Hey but, I really didn't mean to offend you or anything? I don't know you.
If you're helping friends in Iran, maybe we can do something together. Living there has tought me the value of Bitcoin, because it's virtually impossible to get currency in an out of the country otherwise. Now I'm talking to a friend, to create a shop with Bitcoin on Nostr - she wants to sell her clothes online. I'm sure many like her, would take advantage of such a system. I mean, so much entrepreneurship there, it's fantastic.

Today I made my best ribs yet. Basically marinaded them in olive oil with paprica powder for 2 hours, and then popped-them into the oven at 150 degrees, for another 2 1/2 hours without foil or anything.
I never bothered to marinate them for this long, but the meat came out much softer this time. Seems like the olive oil had quite an impact.
I usually enjoy them plain, or with Mustard.

Yeah, that's super-tricky. I mean, there's plenty of people working on improving feeds. Stuff like https://oddbean.com/.
On one hand, I'm totally against that sort of thing. It's so bubbly; And most people will likely stick to one kind of feed, because that's what they become used to. That's why defaults are so powerful. That's why Twitter feed appears as much more interesting, out of the box - but it's also why I'm not on Twitter.

Yeah, on-boarding to Mastodon is hardly great.
If you look at it in isolation, Damus has great on-boarding for example; But that's just it. I guess you're already familiar with all this stuff? You hardly seem like the average dude with a phone in his hands.

Yes sure, you're right. Mastodon ultimately is just an activity pub client / server; but that's exactly it. It's a brand by now. Nobody (99%) cares about the activity pub part, and most users relying on activity pub, are using Mastodon presumably (though that's really just a guess).

I think I've been part of enough male-dominated cmmunities in my life to say that they'll do just fine without woman to "keep up a constant chatter". One should really keep in mind, how non-techies see the world. I've once seen a statistic that most people wouldn't be able to tell you what they use to access the internet. They just use what's there - the icon that's familiar.
Not sure how this has shifted over the years, but it doesn't mean that these people are stupid; They may have in-depth knowledge in other fields, which they like to share with others.
It's certainly easier to jump on Twitter to share, than to find the right Mastodon server, or figure out which app to use to access Nostr. Twitter is Twitter - on iOS, Android, the Web. Yes, that's a disadvantage, but it's also a tremendous advantage.

Maybe food for thought: One thing that Mastodon has going over Nostr, is branding. I mean, unless you want to "dive" into the third party ecosystem, Mastodon looks pretty much the same, wherever you access it - it's always the Mastodon web client - that's how you can recognize it easily.
On Nostr, many clients feel like seperate entities. Someone may be on Primal, another Iris, another Damus - Seems like these are seperate entities.
When you ask, are you on Mastodon?
It's a clear, yes or no.
Are you on Damus?
What is Damus even?
Oh, it's Nostr. Is this, like the internet?
I still think there's no good solution here; I wonder what's more mental overhead for users: Mastodon with multiple servers, or Nostr, with keys and relays.

Also interesting, the #Nostr retention rate is actually getting worse. In fact, it's been getting consistently worse, over 6 months.

Why is there an assumption, that we'll be able to keep AI off Nostr, if we so desire? Why do people assume that paid-relays, are immune to bots and spamming? Nostr is tiny. Why wouldn't a spammer pay a couple of cents, to spam on a premium server? Hell, it might be stolen money or coming out of a rug-pull.

Why is the discussion never about, what we're going to lose? Your guest was a developer, who claimed to find much use in AI for debugging and improvement - how difficult is it for you to imagine, that he'd be completely replaced by AI?

It seems what people consider "normies" varies significantly. When I'm refering to getting normies on Nostr, I'm refering to more people in the Linux space; People doing research on things that don't involve Bitcoin - basically people that don't already have a deep connection with Bitcoin and Nostr (and use them, for that very reason).
I'm here because the protocol is exiting and I enjoy working with it. It's fun developing a client for the sake of it, and being able to join a network and put it to use immideately. I'm also here because I didn't much care about my Mastodon server, and about social media in general - but working on it, is a different thing.
But that's exactly it. The people that are here now, are here because of Nostr; Or because nobody else would have them - but I think of Nostr much more like the invisible layer, people don't have to think about - and that means, it really isn't a debate about reaching more normies on TikTok, it's about getting more people on Nostr, so I don't have to worry about where they are - and how to access them there; So that we have other normies, that are geeks in their own things ... gardening?
I sure wouldn't mind to read more about gardening, than how Nostr fixes everything.

There's some cluster boards that allow you to plugin these compute modules. A board with 16 sockets and 8GB memory on each compute module could probably handle a good load - not sure how this works out in terms of runtime cost vs. a traditional server. SSDs are certainly dirt cheap right now.

I think it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem, which centralized social media solves with advertising.
Msybe I'm asking the wrong questions.
What incentive is there, to run a premium relay, among free relays? Would someone pay for the identical Facebook experience, when someone else is getting it for free? Premium might imply "faster" or "more available" but Clients by design connect to 10 or 20 or more relays, so it shouldn't even matter if half of them are "faster".
And you're right, "locked-out" is meaningless, unless the premium relay has content, which cannot be shared to another relay (not sure how that would work, unless the majority agrees not to re-post premium content).

You're right for sure. I'm on a comfy European fibre connection righ now, so everything is butter-smooth. But even on a shitty 3G connection, it should be possible to request / download a few KB in 1-2 seconds (even with a ping of 500ms).
So unless you government is restricting access, either your client doesn't have enough, or good enough servers, or there's another issue in the client - caching or whatever.

Free is certainly easiest for on-boarding.
Imagine you had to pay, to get a Bitcoin wallet. Doesn't really make sense technically, but the idea is the same. Of course Bitcoin has it's own incentives, for both user and operator (miner, nodes).

As I've pointed out, there are examples of services that make payment optional, or offer some sort of premium features (more space and so on) to justify the payment. The above example has grown from 0, to 5%, to now closing in on 10% paying users. You can still use it completely free.

I don't really think this is applicable here
1. The basic idea is, that the user shouldn't have to think about Relays. There may (and frankly should) be thousands of relays, all of which distribute a portion of content. Having premium / non-premium relays, just means complexity for users, and lower reach for .. users.
2. There's no way to ensure that a relay doesn't track you. In fact, given that all of your data is public, most of the tracking can be done by anyone, so there's no real incentive not to get tracked.

I just cannot imagine monetization on Nostr yet. Most people aren't used to pay, to store their data. You can reason as much as you want, they will still prefer the 0-cost alternative.
And with the number of "premium" relays growing, many users will find themselves locked-out.
Can't we come-up with some sort of network funding? Where ultimately ~5% of the users, pay for 100% of the infastructure? A bucket, that's split among relay / proxy and storage operators, based on the capacity they provide (and process).

It's real cool - don't get me wrong. I just wonder what compells someone to use this, aside from the fact it's on Nostr?
I mean, there's 1,000,000,000 recipe websites out there, all of which arguable provide the same, and are much easier to find (because they are indexed).
I like to cook myself, and I've always thought about sharing some recipe some time, but I wonder if I'd end up putting it on nostr.cooking, or any other site? What speaks for nostr.cooking is the novelty, maybe the ease of access (because I'm already on Nostr), but I'd have to worry about persistance (relay deletes old notes?) and visibility (not indexed; mostly for Nostr users). Of course I don't really care if anyone sees it, but I'm also not trying to get anything out of it, but the pleasure of sharing.
Maybe something like lightning splits could be used to generate bulk-purchases with vendors, to obtain cheaper / more high quality ingredients? Like where 100 people on Nostr split a cow - that when flly grown, will be distributed among these 100 backers.
I mean, there's got to be some value here beyond ... here's another recipe website - and you cannot get blocked, in case someone finds it offensive ;)
