Arriving from a nice walk in Christ Church Meadow, I crossed the narrow pedestrian passerelle that leads to the punts parking spot behind the Head of the River. I sat there and drew Folly Bridge. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland originated as a story told on a boating trip which began from this very spot.

Outside 'The Bear,' a sign boasts that the pub is the oldest in England. I suspect that every village and town in England has a pub making a similar claim. According to Wikipedia, the current pub stands on the site of The Bear Inn, which dates back to 1241. Over nearly 800 years, the inn underwent many changes, a series of owners—one of whom is said to have had a pet bear. In case you wonder, there are no bears around the pub today.

On the day before drawing this view, I was standing almost on top of Mount Etna, looking at the fresh lava flowing from a safe distance of a few meters. An unbelievable experience. The volcano still looks impressive, as viewed from Taormina, fifty kilometers away. The day was very hot, and soon after finishing this drawing, we spent the rest of the afternoon in a hotel's pool. I returned to the place of my very first drawing in Oxford, two years after my initial visit. This time I sketched the so-called Bridge of Sighs from the other side. This must be one of the most photographed places in Oxford. There was a constant stream of students in gowns posing in front of the structure with their families. Carfax is Oxford's center, where the city's four main streets meet. The Carfax Tower is all that's left of St. Martin's Church, which stood here for almost 900 years. The church was eventually demolished in 1896 to make room for road traffic. Ironically, 120 years later, two of the streets at this junction are now pedestrian-only. #art #watercolors #grownostr #plebchain

The Oxford Botanic Garden is the oldest in England and one of the oldest in the world. This is the Danby Gate, its front entrance. This gate was shot at during the Civil War— incredible! If it were up to me, every building would still be massively decorated like this today, with niches for statues, rusticated surfaces, and inscriptions. Unfortunately, all we have now is plain concrete and glass instead.

New College is not new, at least since 1379, when it was founded. This must be one of my favorite streets of Oxford old center; It is the summer entrance of New College: on the left, the wall of the cloister and on the right the sharp turn under the archway that leads to Queen’s Lane.

Just below Magdalen Bridge, there is a very popular spot for punting. I've tried it myself twice, both times when friends were visiting and the weather was nice. It is surprisingly difficult to propel the boat forward in a straight line. Every amateur punter inevitably ends up zigzagging between the riverbanks, narrowly missing and sometimes hitting other boats. I have yet to witness anyone falling into the water, though.

I see the bushes popping out from this old wall, and I hear the humbling message from nature: 'Everywhere is my domain. I do as I please. You are here with your walls only temporarily because I let you. As soon as you stop working against me, I will take everything back from you.' But it is said gently, with yellow flowers sprouting from a wall, and the wall is actually better for it.

The entrance to Christ Church Meadow from St. Aldates is always packed with tourists snapping photos of Christ Church College or taking selfies among the flowers in the War Memorial Garden. I was not able to properly render justice to the remarkable view here. In my defense, there are so many levels of vegetation and building overlapping.

The Lamb and Flag Passage is an alleyway which runs through the famous Lamb and Flag pub on St Giles’ Street and leads to the Natural History Museum. When I cycle through it, I need to maneuver around pedestrians and slalom through the barriers put on the other end to prevent vehicle passage. The big horse-chestnut looks at least one hundred years old. It is amazing to see its awakening with so many budding leaves. Spring is here.

Rain is really annoying. Even when it’s not raining, the sky's usually gloomy. It's tough to find a good view with interesting shadows. After wandering around for a bit, I decided to sketch the Sheldonian Theatre. It's still impressive, even in dull light. I like how you can see the spire of Exeter College Chapel from this angle. Last year, I came to the Sheldonian Theatre to listen Richard Dawkins speak. It was an emotion to be in the same room as one of my intellectual heroes.

Bath Place Hotel is a cluster of small cottages constructed just outside the old city wall in the early 1600s. At the end of the alley, after a sharp turn left, a narrow passage leads to the Turf Tavern, one of the oldest inn of Oxford, and now a famous pub. The area was once housing people from the lower level of society. Jane Burden, who later became the favored model for artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, was born here. Just outside the hotel, a plaque mentions that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had multiple secret rendezvous here. I believe the towers visible in the background belong to All-Souls College.

A postcard from the first half of this year's winter holiday. Nobody goes to the beach in winter, despite the nice weather allowing me to stay in a T-shirt. I also briefly entertained the idea of jumping into the sea: the incredible amount of jellyfish washed ashore deterred me, not the temperature. I drew a view of the Sicilian beach at Patti Marina, with numerous boats parked for the winter. The Ashmolean Museum is full of art from the ancient world. The collection started in the XVII century, making it one of the oldest public museums in the UK. I love to wander its rooms filled with statues, ceramics, artifacts, fragments from a distant past. I can’t help but thinking to the person who carved, or painted, or molded the pieces of art; the one who commissioned it or bought it; the one who got it as a gift. I imagine the time the objects were in use, the statues on display, the paintings decorating important rooms. And then I think about the time they spent buried beneath rubble, covered by dirt or vegetation, forgotten, unappreciated, ignored. But then they were found, transported in a completely different world, in a different time, among different people. And they were appreciated again, recognized and admired. Not a bad ending…

Sooner or later, I had to draw the Radcliffe Camera again. It's my absolute favorite spot in Oxford. I'm not exactly sure if it's the size, the perfect proportions, the symmetry…I just find it endlessly enjoyable to watch. So, I went there on a cold but sunny day and decided to look at it from a different angle.

I haven't yet tried to paddle on my SUP on the Oxford Canal, but it is definetely on my bucket list. This is a view from Jericho, the tower bell of St. Barnabas tower is visible on the back ground. There are loads of narrow boats parked along both sides of the canal. The folks living on those boats seem really chill.

Back in Saluzzo for holiday, I once more ended up strolling through the old town, trying to find a place to sketch. This is the Church of the Black Cross, no longer used as a church, I believe it is now a museum. Shame on me, I never saw the inside.

Leaving the wide open space of Christ Church Meadow, you can use a small gate that only one person can go through at a time. Once you pass through, you'll find yourself in a narrow walking path. The tall tower of Merton College Chapel sticks out above the trees, just behind a thick row of bushes. A bunch of tourists were going through this path that day. One guy even stopped and asked me for directions.

The remarkable courtyard of the Old Bodleian Library, one of the oldest libraries in Europe. The statue of the Earl of Pembroke, founder of Pembroke College, is gazing towards the Tower of the Five Orders. Behind him, you cannot see the entrance of the Divinity School, which I will probably draw another time. This enclosed space is always full of tourists, and rightly so. It was quite challenging to capture enough of the view on the paper; I had to eyeball a pseudo fish-eye perspective. #watercolors #art #plebchain #grownostr

This church, constructed in 1836 to resemble a Greek temple, has been desecrated, survived a demolition attempt, and it is now a cocktail bar. I was invited to a 'bop,' a college party, held in this place, despite my old age. It was fun. Yes, there is indeed a shark on the roof of that house. The first time I saw it while passing by on the bus, I thought WTF??? I later realized it is pretty famous around here. It was lowered on the roof with a crane on August 9, 1986. The homeowner commissioned an artist to create the sculpture. The city council initially fought the weird sculpture, because you know, burocrats. The heroic owner got the support of many, nationally and abroad, an he eventually won the fight. The original Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford on Broad Street. It is huge, with a massive amount of books, a big space underground too. Everytime I visit, I fondly remember a time before internet and smartphones, when I used to read actual books…My younger self would have loved this place. My current self, on the other hand, just bought two slim books about Oxford, filled with anecdotes and history about the city. I will have something to say when someone come visiting.

Trinity College, viewed from Broad Street. This wall is covered with a lush ivy-clad wall. I recall coming here during the long, dark and depressing winter months and imagining how beautiful this place would be in spring. I was right. This is the entrance of the medieval Magdalen college, on Hight Street. I walked around a bit, over my lunch break, in a sunny but relatively cold day. I decided to stop and draw the beautiful wooden gates of the college, decorated with statues and elaborate floral and shield reliefs.

The Eagle and Child is an historical pub on St. Giles' Street. I read it was here since 1650. J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S.Lewis and the other members of the writers group "The Inklings" met in this pub every Thursday evening for years. The pub is closed since 2020, another victim of Covid restrictions... Couple of doors down the road, Ramen Kulture serves the best ramen in Oxford. I love ramen.

St. Mary's passage connects Hight Street to the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford, and I heard a story about this little pathway. The famous writer C.S.Lewis once exited via the side door of the church, facing St. Mary's passage, on a snowy day. Directly in front of the church exit, there is a wooden door adorned with the relief of a lion and flanked by two fauns. Its view somehow conjured in the young author's mind the picture of "a faun with a parcel in a snowy wood". That image was the seed that, many years later, blossomed in his famous Narnia book series. Now, I am not really certain this is completely true, but I was told that on Internet one could write whatever he wants without being saddled by things like accuracy or truthfulness, so that's it.

I very frequently park the bike here when I go to the city center. I like the corner tower of this building, decorated with reliefs showing tigers, elephants and moustached barechest men. Makes sense, since it used to be the Indian Institute of Oxford. You know, British Empire and such...While I was drawing, it started to rain and of course a drop of rain fell exactly on the only spot with fresh ink. Try to spot the stain.

Every day, on my way to the gym or grocery store, I walk past this charming cottage with a thatched roof. It looks completely different from the surrounding buildings, which consist of two big malls and an ugly, multilevel parking lot. It's not hard to imagine a time when this cottage was situated in a more rural and sparsely populated area. Or perhaps it was built in the 80s by a weirdo.

I like very much the dome on top of the circular structure supported by columns, so prominent on top of the entrance, so I was very surprised when I asked chatGPT to write a brief description of the Queen's College entrance and it adamantly said that there was no dome on top of it, nor columns, nor statue. It insisted that "the entrance features a vaulted archway with a series of spires and sculptures rising above the roofline". Only after I told it that I saw and drew the dome myself that very day, that it apologized and admitted that "it appears that there is indeed a dome structure on top of the entrance of Queen's College on High Street, Oxford"...

I am reposting here an old drawing of mine, about this ominous building that towers over Basel main train station. This is the BIS tower, one of the reasons the current financial system is so profoundly wrong. To feel better, I embedded in this drawing a symbol of hope. Let me know if you find it.
