Enlightenment 0.27, released this week, brings a wealth of incremental improvements to users of this unique desktop environment. Tiling Shell’s Newest Feature Speeds Up Window Snapping
Window snapping GNOME extension Tiling Shell —not that you need an introduction to it by now— adds a nifty new feature in its latest update. Tiling Shell v16 introduces Windows Suggestions, a feature the add-on’s author described as being able to “provide intelligent recommendations for other windows to tile, making window management smoother and more intuitive.” Per the GIF below, placing a window in a tile using the tiling system results in on-screen suggestions for other windows to tile in the the remaining gaps. VLC Developers Working on AI-Powered Real-Time Subtitles
Real-time AI subtitling is in the works for VLC, the phenomenally popular open-source media player. VideoLAN, the non-profit in charge of VLC development, demoed automatic subtitle generation in VLC at CES 2025 (where not using AI made you stand out this year), and shared a clip of the feature in action (at their CES booth) on X last week. What’s interesting is that the feature doesn’t use a cloud service, logins, or internet connection. Linux Foundation & Google Form New Group to Manage Chromium
Google is teaming up with the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, Meta, and Opera to form a new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers group. Members of the group, managed by the Linux Foundation, will work together, pool resources, talent, time, and expertise to improve, innovate, and accelerate development of the open-source Chromium codebase. Why the Linux Foundation? Google cites their “long established practices for open governance, prioritizing transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven development.” For its part, Google says it has no intention of reducing its contributions to Chromium (which made up roughly 94 percent of all commits to the codebase in 2024), but will :sys_more_orange:

COSMIC Alpha 5 Brings Media Player App, User Account Editing + More
A big alpha update to System76’s COSMIC desktop environment is out, bringing new apps, more settings, and plenty of performance tuneups and pesky bug fixes. This is the 5th alpha preview of the Rust-based DE since August 2024. GNOME’s New Image Viewer is Add Image Editing Features
Loupe (aka Image Viewer) is GNOME’s modern successor to the venerable Eye of GNOME has picked up its first batch of image editing features. The features in question were only recently merged upstream, aren’t finished, and not yet included in a stable build. But they’re an interesting addition that furthers the likelihood that Loupe could become the default image viewer on Ubuntu. New Open Source Terminal App Ghostty is One to Watch
We’re seeing something of a terminal emulator renaissance of late with the humble no-frills console being reimagined, rethought, and rewired to use GPU acceleration, containerised workflows, and (naturally) AI. Ghostty is a new, open-source and cross-platform terminal app created by Mitchell Hashimoto (the co-founder of HashiCorp). He says he “set out to build a terminal emulator that was fast, feature-rich, and had a platform-native GUI while still being cross-platform.” And based on the first release of Ghostty 1.0, which materialised over Christmas like a Dickensian spectre, he’s a fair way to achieving those aims! Want to See Pinned Ubuntu Dock Apps in the Application Grid?
You may have noticed (or not) that if an app is pinned to the Ubuntu Dock you don’t see a shortcut for it in the applications grid. This approach is by design to avoid duplication since the dock is always visible (by default) so those app shortcuts are always in reach – each app shortcut only shows once. Not everyone likes this behaviour, especially if Ubuntu Dock auto-hide is enabled. Kdenlive 24.12 arrives stuffed like a seasonal bird with bug fixes, performance tweaks, and usability enhancements. Mozilla Revenue Jumped in 2023, But Search Deal Cash Fell
Mozilla’s overall revenue saw a sizeable boost in 2023, despite a drop in income from its lucrative search engine deals. According to its latest financial report, Mozilla’s revenue in 2023 hit $653 million (US), up from $593 million in 2022. The cause of the increase? A paint splatter, super-tired face, and a harp are among new emoji users of Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 LTS will be able to see and type after installing an update to the Noto Color Emoji font. Two years in development, Xfce 4.20 is the latest stable release of this lightweight desktop environment. New Version of Mir-Based Tiling Window Manager Miracle-WM Out
A new version of Miracle-wm, a Mir-based tiling window manager, is out. Miracle-wm 0.4 continues to make inroads in fleshing out its support for i3 IPC, vital work needed to make sure popular tools like waybar, nwg-shell, etc work well as well here as they do in Sway, i3, hyprland, et al. Workspace improvements aplenty make it in, also. Workspaces can be assigned names and those names relayed to shell components, while new commands make it easier for users to change workspaces and/or move containers to workspaces. Linux Mint 22.1 Beta is Now Available to Download
A beta version of Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia” is now officially available to download, ahead of an anticipated stable release at the end of December. Linux Mint 22.1 is an in-series update to Linux Mint 22, released earlier back in July. It continues to be based on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, and is powered by the Linux 6.8 kernel (with new kernel versions coming as part of Ubuntu’s HWE). Advanced Weather Companion GNOME Shell Extension
macOS 15.2 is rolling out today (December 11), and my tech feeds are hyped with its highlights. Among the (non-AI) changes I spotted: the option to display weather info in the menu bar – native, built-in, ready to go. Seeing a “news peg” (as they’re called), I figured I’d use that as motivation to get around to writing about Advanced Weather Companion, yet-another GNOME Shell weather extension that shows temperature and current conditions in the top bar. How to Enable Tab Groups in Firefox
Among the new features Mozilla is working on for Firefox are tab groups, a nifty productivity feature already present in many other web browsers, including Google Chrome and Vivaldi. This isn’t news, of course. Mozilla laid out the major new features it was bringing to users earlier this year. Mozilla Announce Smaller, Faster Browser Downloads For Linux
Firefox fans on Linux will enjoy smaller download sizes and faster decompressing when using the official binary builds from the Mozilla website. The browser maker today announced its switching to the tar.xz format to distribute its Linux builds, which uses the more efficient LZMA compression algorithm to deliver smaller downloads and faster extraction times. Good things come to those who wait, and for 3D modelling professionals with a preference for open-source software, the wait for the FreeCAD 1.0 release has been a long one – over 22 years! Automatic Tiling Added to ‘Tiling Shell’ GNOME Extension
I’d promise to shut up about the Tiling Shell GNOME Shell extension but I can’t because new features are coming thick and fast — the latest: support for automatic tiling. Yes, this nifty workflow wonder is finally able to automatically tile newly opened windows based on the currently active tiling layout (and as you may sick of me re-emphasising: you can switch between different layouts ad-hoc, and create and save your own). Rhythmbox’s New Release Fixes Its Broken DAAP Server + More
A new version of the GTK-based music player Rhythmbox has been released, the first major update in over a year. Rhythmbox 3.4.8 is billed as a ‘minor improvement release’ so there are no shiny new features or (some would say overdue) UI changes to speak of. But there are plenty of bug fixes and smaller quality enhancements worth knowing about. Ubuntu 25.04 plans to include a new default PDF viewer app. Evince (aka Document Viewer) is the PDF app that comes preinstalled in Ubuntu at present. But next April’s release of Ubuntu 25.04 ‘Plucky Puffin’ could ship with a new app called Papers. Heard of Papers? It’s a modern GTK/libadwaita app to ‘view, search and annotate documents’ saved in a variety of different formats (not only PDF, but PDF is the certainly most ubiquitous in every-day needs). VMware Workstation is Now Free for Everyone, Including Commercial Use
Back in the spring, VMware did something unexpected: it made its desktop hypervisor software free to download and use on Windows, macOS, and Linux. No trial period, no in-app purchases, no feature limitations. The “catch” was that it was only free for personal use. Businesses, educators, freelancers, and developers who planned to use the software for so-called ‘commercial’ purposes were asked to be honest and pay for a license. Now, that’s no longer needed. Calibre 7.2.1 Brings Read Aloud Fixes, New Audio Overlay
Calibre ebook manager, converter, and reader is out with a new update, and it adds an enticing sounding new feature. For a while now Calibre has offered a ‘read aloud’ feature that does exactly what you think it does: a computer voice reads the text of an ePUB book. Calibre 7.2.1 intros a “new tool to create an audio overlay in EPUB files for all text using the Read aloud facility”. Burn My Windows Adds Dreamy New ‘Focus’ Effect
It’s been a while since the gorgeous (if admittedly gimmicky) Burn My Windows GNOME Shell extension gained a new effect for over-the-top window closing and opening animation. But the latest release, Burn My Windows v44, delivers one. Apple Maps for Web Now Works in Firefox on Linux
Something to file under “won’t please many Linux users, but is nonetheless a good thing™ for choice”, Apple Maps on the web now works on Linux. Apple launched a web-based beta for its homegrown mapping service Apple Maps in July. Initially, it only officially supported Safari on macOS and iOS, and Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows, macOS, and Android. Mozilla Firefox support was added in August, but only for users on macOS and Windows. And according to the support page that remains the case. Linux Mint Adding Native ‘Night Light’ Feature to Cinnamon
Linux Mint has revealed it’s brining a native ‘night light’ mode to the Cinnamon desktop. Earlier versions of Linux Mint included a third-party app called Redshift to provide similar functionality. However, when then Mozilla location service was shut down earlier this year, the geo-location capabilities powering Redshift (which made the feature kick-in at sunset for the users location) no longer worked – although the app itself still did. But Linux Mint’s developers felt that asking users to work around the breakage by punching in their location’s longitude and latitude coordinates manually was a tough ask, especially for a distro focused :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu developers today announced that Ubuntu 25.04 ‘Plucky Puffin’ is officially open for development. We even have a tentative release date, with Ubuntu 25.04 due to arrive on April 17, 2025. Calibre eBook Manager Intros New PDF Conversion Engine
Open source ebook manager Calibre has a new release out. Calibre 7.2.0 ships with a brand new PDF input engine (used to convert PDF files into other ebook formats, such as EPUB or MOBI). It’s now able to handle “automatic detection of headers and footers based on document analysis”. Fans of the old engine needn’t panic as it’s still included and available to select from the PDF Input section of the Conversion dialog. Clementine Music Player Gets First Non-Preview Release in 8 Years
Remember Clementine music player? Well, it appears to be back in play – some 8 years since its last stable release. While Clementine feels like it’s slipped out of public consciousness in recent years the player has remained under active development. The last stable release was in 2016 (v1.3.1) but a LOT of release candidate builds were issued since (v1.4.0-rc is carried in the Ubuntu repos). Ardour 8.8 (Open Source DAW) Drops Fresh Fixes & Features
Ardour is one of the most popular and powerful open-source digital audio workstations (DAW) around, and a major new update was recently made available. Now, I won’t profess to be some kind of music-making maestro, though I did spend a lot my late teens face-first in FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) trying – and failing – to channel my inner Cash Cash (’08 era, before they got big). Mozilla’s New Branding Looks Even Better Animated
A few months ago I reported that Mozilla is working on a brand revamp that incorporates its original (and rather iconic) dinosaur mascot – although it does kind of look like a flag. An omg! commenter recently pointed me to the website of global design agency Jones Knowles Ritchie, who Mozilla hired to update, refine, and revitalise its brand identity. They’ve worked with all manner of companies, from Burger King to Budweiser – and now web browser maker. Their website has a page showcasing their work on this revamp, and it’s filled with dynamic animations that (I think) showcase the :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 24.04 Gives ‘App Center’ a Brand New Icon
App Center, Ubuntu’s Flutter-based replacement for the Ubuntu Software app, has a new icon. This isn’t the first icon change to App Center, which is a pre-installed snap package (snap-store) in Ubuntu 23.10 and 24.04 in recent months. A few months back an update to the software installation frontend rolled out and unintentionally swapped the full-colour, 3D Yaru icon for a flat, 2D, solid orange icon with transparent elements. A subsequent update resolved the issue. Now the App Center icon has changed again, although this time the swap is intentional. The new icon is taller, and the right-hand leg of :sys_more_orange:

How to Bring Back Ubuntu’s Iconic Login Sound
If you only started using Ubuntu sometime after 2012 then you have my apologies: this article won’t make a whole lot of sense. But if your roots with the distro reach back farther then the following curio might appeal (though that ‘might’ is, I accept, doing a lot of lifting). When I reported on the new IRC-based chat app Linux Mint is building a commenter amusingly referred to IRC adherents as “nostalgia connoisseurs”. Plattenalbum is a Modern-Looking MPD Client for Linux
This week I heard about Plattenalbum, a modern GTK4/libadwaita Music Player Daemon (MPD) client and it looks good so figured I’d give it a shoutout! Y’know, cheesy 1980s DJ style 🧀. MPD remains a popular way to access music that’s stored on a server, another computer, or even locally, and a user-friendly desktop MPD client is crucial to being able to enjoy it. Plattenalbum looks to be preciously that. This isn’t a “why you should use MPD” article nor a guide about installing MPD in Ubuntu. Firefox 124 Released, Supports Screen Wake Lock API
Mozilla Firefox 124 is now officially available to download. The latest update to the open-source web browser includes a small clutch of improvements including, notably, support for the Screen Wake Lock web API. The Screen Wake Lock API is used by web developers to prevent device screens from dimming or locking when their web-based app/site is running/being used. Firefox is late to adoption as this API has been support by Chromium-based browsers and Apple’s Safari for several years. Firefox View is able to sort of open tabs by recent activity (default) or tab order, making it a touch faster to :sys_more_orange:

Mozilla Drops Axe on its Privacy-Friendly Location Service
Mozilla has announced it is retiring its Mozilla Location Service (MLS), which provides accurate and privacy-respecting geolocation data. Developers and third-party projects currently use MLS to provide location data, such as FreeDesktop location framework GeoClue, leveraged by apps like GNOME’s Maps and Weather, have only a few months left to use it. We knew cuts were coming from the new CEO but the axe has fallen ruthlessly quick on this! New API access keys will not be granted going forward (and pending requests deleted), Mozilla say. VLC Passes 5 Billion Downloads, Teases Big Changes in Next Release
VLC media player has now been downloaded over 5 billion times across desktop and mobile devices, with the most recent release clocking up an impressive 335 million downloads alone! Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of VideoLAN, the non-profit company who develop VLC, shared this monumental milestone in a natter with Lowpass newsletter editor Janko Roettgers. Linux Mint is Building a New Desktop Chat App
A new IRC client (but don’t call it an IRC client) is being developed by Linux Mint. The Ubuntu-based distro currently includes Hexchat in its default software selection. IRC isn’t as trendy as Discord or Telegram but it a free, open standard that no one-entity controls, is relatively low-bandwidth, interoperable, and efficient. But as I reported in February: Hexchat is no more. However, Hexchat ‘quitting the chat’ leaves —I so badly want to say leafs— Linux Mint with a dilemma and an opportunity. A new open-source nostalgia project lets you turn back time in web browser aesthetics. Silverfox is a custom theme for Mozilla Firefox ESR that recreates the look of Google Chrome in its early days.
