i've lived near Tahoe and in CO, both of which do get mountain lions.
every year, news programs remind folks that leaving your pet chained outside at night is like a mountain lion "snack on a rope".

i've always liked this bladerunner quote when some wide-eyed innocent asks me what doing infra on the internet is like as a job:

at one point, i was a pilates instructor and working for a gym. you've hit two of the key factors (convenient location, sane contract/termination). the last factor that really seems to make a difference between the folks that go for 3 months and never again and those who stick is a workout partner.
might be a class you like, a particular person, but having someone else who's also committing seems to really make a huge diff.

in the 80s, the pentagon didn't have budget for "computers". so some genius officer ordered 8 pdp/70s running at&t system iii w roff and called them "word processors". the system names were even WP0-WP7.
those of us doing sysadmin and C programming thought this was way cool. the poor GS3's expected to do all documents in unix/vi/roff were less thrilled. as were a bunch of O6/O7s who had to keep calling us E4s to explain how to do things.
i was also less than thrilled when i had to figure out how to do a raw roff macro that would use a special IBM diablo printer to fill out forms, including box overflows, etc. educational experience.
