in the 80s, the pentagon didn't have budget for "computers". so some genius officer ordered 8 pdp/70s running at&t system iii w roff and called them "word processors". the system names were even WP0-WP7.

those of us doing sysadmin and C programming thought this was way cool. the poor GS3's expected to do all documents in unix/vi/roff were less thrilled. as were a bunch of O6/O7s who had to keep calling us E4s to explain how to do things.

i was also less than thrilled when i had to figure out how to do a raw roff macro that would use a special IBM diablo printer to fill out forms, including box overflows, etc. educational experience.
