Yes. Fire ecology, i.e. how ecosystems adapt to fire in fire-prone regions, is really interesting.
Most wildfires start because of human activities (arson, errors, negligence, etc). Only very few are due to natural causes eg lightning. In addition climate change changes their intensity and extension.
For me it’s hard to fathom how this will play out for those ecosystems and which species will be able to adapt to the pace and human action (or inaction).

Maybe they should have mentioned climate change and told the Jasperites that such catastrophes can’t be ruled out anymore. In fact their likelihood, even of happening again in the same place, will continue to increase even more the more fossil fuels are burnt.
I know this may not be a tasty message for many in fossil-fuel-loving Alberta but it’s the truth.

Indeed. To be fair I’m aware that many normal activities in the US are an ordeal without a car. The whole infrastructure designed exclusively for cars and normalised by decades of gaslighting to the point that people don’t even notice anymore their full dependency on them.
And a bottled water drive-through after a natural disaster is so representative of exactly that.

Look into the Messmer Plan. Indeed FR ramped up their fleet very fast, in a completely undemocratic way, and without involvement of Parlament or the public based on a state operated & backed industry with strong military-industrial link. Such a ramp up seems to me not replicable in today’s Western democracies. Many nuke advocates use it as an example of how fast it was done. But I prefer to look at how fast it is actually done today.

The left / green parties have a role to play certainly, especially in the defense of democracy, the environment and social interests.
But I think it's fundamental that the conservative and liberal voters who are aware of this spirally trend put massive pressure on their parties to stop the madness and make them return to constructive behavior. Only through successful politics they will be able to get their old voters back.

You're right. Absolutely right.
I'm concerned however, if conservative and liberal parties also think this way. Currently, many of these parties have lost voters to the right-wingers, and instead of trying to get them back through their own ideals, they have acted close to right-wing rhetoric in an attempt to persuade them to return. This pushes more people right, which in turn leads to more right-friendly rhetoric. It's a freaking spiral of democratic suicide.

Not only expensive but also slow to deploy.
And expensive and slow in the worst way, i.e. when costs and delays explode while you’re building it.
Not to mention nuclear waste, risk of nuclear armament proliferation, risk of nuclear accidents which end up being socialized, very bad compatibility with flexible power generation, water use and dependency on cooling sources.

While my neighbours spend their time hunting for weed, removing moss from cracks, maniacally attempting the „perfect“ lawn, I go on creating hiding places, nesting places, drinking places, shadow places, wet places, warm places, feeding places and more for other life forms. I have discovered joy in fomenting #nature and #biodiversity even in a small area as where I live.
Nothing is done anymore in the garden without giving a thought about how others benefit or lose from it.

To me there’s a difference between no progress at all and a little progress even if that won’t be enough by far.
If we discredit every small action or the sum of all small actions and call them „no progress“ because they don’t solve the big problem aren’t we falling in the nirvana fallacy?
There are climate actions which are way larger than plastic straws, like the amount of solar PV rolling out.

Thanks for sharing! The question itself is ambiguous. What does „doomed“ mean? Which time horizon are we talking about? Which rate of descent into doom? All of humanity? A portion of it?
Probably each person had his/her own interpretation.
So I still have my doubts. If people were really concerned and aware we would see this reflected on how they vote, wouldn’t we?

It sucks indeed. A predicament. There ain’t an easy way out out of the mess our culture has gotten itself into. No silver bullets, no magic technology, no holy miracle. It will be tough any way we go. But there are different outcome scenarios. This should give hope and fuel our actions. We need to try still within our own individual possibilities. Not because we’re sure we will succeed but because it’s the righ thing to do.

Most people aren’t aware about the magnitude of our failure and what it means. To many, thanks to a continuous bombardment of „successes“ and „solutions“ (e.g. by the IEA or the WEF) , we’re still on track to „keep 1.5C alive“. They don’t even know that even if we were on such a pathway that means we only have a coin toss of a chance of making it. We’re celebrating bandages while the patient needs heart surgery.

(unfortunately) I strongly doubt it.
Have you read the UN Production Gap Report?
I agree we should acknowledge we’re making some progress. But more important, in my view, it’s that we accept failure, for example the utter failure to meet 1.5C. And then talk openly (officially) about the consequences of this failure and of failing more and more. Only then it will be clear to us that we’re not doing enough.
