Huh. I had an Amstrad in the 80s. It was basically an IBM-PC clone. Had a choice of DR-DOS or MS-DOS, and this weird "Gem" window system.
Is that the same system? I believe we got it from a local store in Fort Worth, Texas.

Hmm. I took it to stand for "data dump". 🤔
"Dump" usually meaning an unceremonious output of all the contents of something, without formatting, as in "core dump".
So it seemed descriptive of what 'dd" did.

I believe that as a matter of history, there WERE stories about audiences being shocked and frightened by the realism, as if a real train were heading right for them.
But I have my doubts about the accuracy of these reports. There might've been just a smidge of sensational storytelling going on.

Well, "that's nice work if you can get it", as the saying goes. 😅
You have to have the excess budget of time, the right bundle of skills, and often money to boot -- even for tiny projects.
For a film, though? You're going to need a cast and crew. And while occasionally you get a highly-fortunate convergence of people willing to work on a project for free, that's definitely the exception.
(And now the contributors are the "market", which brings us back to square one).

Thing is, the gatekeepers are typically there to make money, and they know their market.
So when you take their place and try to sell directly to the market, you typically find out what was motivating the gatekeepers, and much the same results shake out.
So, for example, you find that fan-fics are FAR easier to crowdfund than original works, just as it's easier to sell a publisher on a sequel to a successful work.

Well, you definitely have to read "To Your Scattered Bodies Go", which I believe is the first "Riverworld" novel, and the Hugo award winner. Very interesting premise.
After that, IDK. That's the only one of his have I read.

New problems keep coming up, and I keep boosting them above the long-standing problems, and so there just doesn't seem to be time to work on these core issues.
But then I blow time on perseveration/calming things like simple games. And that is an anxiety symptom -- unable to reach a productive flow state, stuck on the surface.
I mean, I have broken through a few times, but not enough.

It's August. That's a month into Q3.
Have not achieved any of my Q2 goals, which were recycled Q1 coals, which were recycled 2023 goals.
Clearly, my mitigation measures are not getting the job done.
I think it's going to take more than schedules and to-do lists. I think I have to address the mental health issues that are really responsible for the blocks.
Because it just doesn't make sense that I didn't have the means to get these things finished.

I did take a sign-language class in college. "Silent classroom" style -- the instructor was deaf. It was a lot of fun, but I only retained a little bit of ASL long term, unfortunately.
