#WritersCoffeeClub Sorry for intruding upon this with a non-club-related request, but I can't think of a better place.
I kinda want to move instances, as spacey.space is pretty small and I want more visibility for my stuff.

I am Max, a hard sci-fi fan and amateur writer. Since 2 years ago or so, I have been making my own constructed world and novel series to go with it. It is semi-optimistic, a contrast to the recent flood of doomer sf, but mostly respects science and puts a lot of effort to worldbuilding and "realistic" alien designs. In effect the setting is a modernized and science-ized space-opera, though the books have somewhat unusual premises for this kind of sf.

I regret rushing my first book's launch instead of cleaning it up first, I think the Stardust franchise had a rough start because of it and only began taking off with Marathon, I cleaned it up by now but the damage is done. :/
I also have a few worldbuilding regrets but they're fairly minor and behind the scenes.

Lessons from the first book: don't give the characters ridiculous accents that are spelled out phonetically, have a goddamn plan, give the characters ways to get the information they need without blind luck
Lessons from the second book: set a longer deadline, keep the tone more consistent, find premises that don't involve the characters spending the whole book in one small spaceship

@npub1g3j…69f8 @npub1f5c…hqzn Using a calculator is fine. In the old days "you won't always have a calculator with you" made sense but now you most likely *will*.
I am studying materials engineering and never learned how to find roots by hand because I have THREE calculators on me: an oldschool calc, my smartphone, and a slide rule.

@npub1qag…9gyn @npub1n20…vlfw Sorry, I genuinely hate Dostoevsky. The messages in his work go against everything I stand for, and the prose itself is honestly overrated.
The others (except Nabokov), as I said before, I have no interest in. I don't hate them, I just don't see why I should read them. In school I mostly looked up summaries and stuff online to pass essay tests about these books because I never liked reading things written before about 1914.
Nabokov is good though.

@npub1qag…9gyn @npub1n20…vlfw I'm Russian, we had a lot of classical literature shoved down our throats in school. All it taught me is that I don't really want to read about nobles dicking around. It's definitely generational, my parents like it but nobody my age does.
Well, I read the Bible but not for fun, I'm just a Christian who decided to not fall into the same trap fundamentalists do of not actually reading their own scripture.

@npub1qag…9gyn @npub1n20…vlfw That and it's public domain so they didn't have to pay royalties or pay a composer to include the works on the show. As I said a production technicality. Still it doesn't paint a good picture, 90% of "highbrow" "entertainment" is to me a snoozefest or offensive. :p

@npub1qag…9gyn @npub1n20…vlfw That I agree with. Just saying there are some pretty disagreeable things in old Trek... but to be fair many of those can be explained by production technicalities.
Like "everyone listens to almost exclusively classical music and listens to classical literature" from TNG. In my personal canon I ignore that because that's not a society I want to live in. Especially classical literature. Not big on the outdated baggage of an obsolete culture.

@npub1qag…9gyn @npub1n20…vlfw ngl, a lot of older (even 90s) Star Trek details are a bit conservative. Denying all kinds of transhuman augmentation for something that happened 300 years ago? Really? That kind of human-body-worship makes me a little queasy.
(Now, to be fair, that's from a Watsonian perspective. From a Doylist perspective, normal humans are easier to portray so I understand. And newer Trek eased up on it a little.)

Kayden is a human who has a few alien friends and lives on a boring and unremarkable frontier planet. One day, he scrounges up enough money for a trip to Earth-- the shining capital of humanity, and takes his friends (2 aliens) along. They stumble into a conspiracy and weird things ensue. A lot of this book is personal interaction and it's fairly chill as far as most sci-fi goes.
