that is strange since i don't think i ever watched the 1963 movie… however, i'm pretty sure the first time i read the novel was back in ussr and translated into russian… and that translation of course could never contain any negative mention of ussr as the source of the infestation, so… that must be why my memory is unclear. definitely, a reread is long due.

i was not debating on or questioning any of the statements you've just mentioned. i'm sorry but you seem to be having a sort of argument with a virtual «me».
my comment only ever refered to a type of discount that many cloud services use that resembles to and works very like the «first free fix».

a discounted year from a subscription based cloud service is basically just the same as a «free fix» from a drug dealer.
doesn't matter if it's a «good» provider (tuta) or an «evil» one (daddygo, google, apple, netflix, you name it): it's just a way to get one hooked; once they get your data, most people will just agree to (almost) any pricing games to keep things simply working, because migration is expensive in money, time & effort.

yes, but no:
a) not (only) tiktok is poison but any and every online service (scratch) trap build on the same principles, including youtube imho,
b) and that is why the way in which tiktok is banned _will be_ important too, so that we're able to re-apply it every time something similar arises.
it will arise. also, i was shoked today by a news of ai-based tv ankors having been tested somewhere. this is getting worse.

subscribing to a personal profile on #fediverse brings that person's posts, all of them, to my home stream <- sometimes things i'm not very interested in.
subscribing to a tag gives (almost) _anyone_ the possibility to spam my home stream with unrelated posts, they only have to slam the tag (cheap). also, posts with misconfigured language.
i with i could setup a filter like: from this person import only posts tagged like that, in these languages. not ideal, but at least less intrusive.

i'm in awe, if i ever write a novel, this is how i'll want it to be illustrated. the power to create _this_ feeling of space and the place of a personage within it with such a limited pixel count is astounding.

a kind of fermented milk, not unsimilar to youghurt but with different bacteria & yeast. originated in caucasus. very popular in soviet union (where they didn't have youghurt in stores until the fall of the wall).
natural, unflavoured is the kind to go, it is very good, don't spoil it with sugar! also much less sour taste then greek youghurt.
love it.
