It's that time of the year again where I jump up at random to run outside or onto the balcony to watch the cranes fly by on their way south. They are quite vocal and usually do a few loops above the house, which is very nice of them.
You'll need to zoom in to catch them in the picture. I wasn't fast enough and only had my phone to take the picture.

I turned over an old wooden board in the garden today and found a small green frog. It made me very happy, because that's the first amphibian I have seen here since moving in and I'm taking it as a sign that the garden is coming back to life slowly but surely.

I spent yesterday evening and most of today dealing with the fact that cracks started to show in the walls of our building. We had firefighters here, and two structural engineers, and people to put in support beams, and everyone was very upset. And while in this case, the damage is due to construction next door, you know what I can't get out of my head? That this is our future. This, too, is what living in a state of climate emergency means.

My Mom told me today that she now understands what I mean when I say that I don't want kids because the future we're looking at isn't one I would wish on anybody, never mind my own child. While I appreciate her support, it also makes me sad.

Wet feet.
Alder carr flooded by the river Briese in Brandenburg, as seen on our hike today. Absolutely magical landscape, clearly shaped by beavers making their home along the river. Great hike, but there were a lot of hungry mosquitoes following us around.

Don't you love it when you submit a manuscript, hear not so much as a peep in response for like 9 months, and then get a passive aggressive email from the editors of the journal about the "need for substantial adjustments" to your paper? I am sorely tempted to withdraw it entirely.

I'm really trying to keep a positive outlook while writing my dissertation on legal protections for biodiversity in the face of the current crisis. You know, something along the lines of "yes, it's terrible and we have made very little progress so far, despite knowing fairly well what we need to do, but there's still hope and a bunch of legal solutions we could implement".
It's difficult, though. It feels like holding two contradictory convictions inside my head at the same time.

I love the cheerful disorder of my balcony pots. It's the result of some deliberate and some random plantings, complemented by a few volunteers. Will I get less tomatoes this way? Probably. But I also have at least five different types of spiders, many wild bee and hoverfly visitors and occasional pretty surprises like this self-sown wild poppy.

@npub1eav…g6f3 I've tried that a couple of times, with different groups of people. It either makes them uncomfortable - which I guess is good? - or they totally miss the point. I'm trying to be fair and understanding: If all of your family lives far away and flying is the only viable option to get there, I wouldn't want to make people feel bad about it. But if it's just for fun, and especially if the next thing out of your mouth is a complaint that people there don't speak enough English, well...

Spent this morning reading about the AMOC showing signs of collapse. And this afternoon having coffee with a group of genuinely nice folks, who were telling each other about their travel plans for the year, all involving several long-distance flights. I just sat there staring into my cup. How do you deal with the cognitive dissonance? Because as it goes on, I feel that it's turning me increasingly speechless.

My dog has officially acquired a fanclub now. He not only has several people who will come by the office exclusively to pet him or take him out for walks. I also got an e-mail today with the bill for a workshop a couple of weeks ago and the explicit offer to dogsit. And the three new people at today's meeting were all over him.

@npub1se6…cmph Well, thanks for clarifying that, because it does matter. There are protests going on in several countries right now, and also by different groups within the same country. I was at an annual march for a better food and farming system a few weeks ago, while at the same time, industrial farmers were blockading half the city, protesting for their right to go on destroying the climate and their own livelihood. It was surreal.

@npub1se6…cmph You do realize that the farmer's protests in Germany are about the government cutting off climate-harming subsidies and are being pushed by a small but powerful agri-industrial lobby that has been using it's influence on politics for decades to the detriment of small farmers? Farm subsidies are also the largest part of the EU budget and all attempts at making them more climate and biodiversity friendly have so far been torpedoed by the same lobby.

I remember taking my cat to the vet in Morocco - the biggest challenge was always to find a cab driver who would even take us. It is such a privilege to just be able to walk to the vet down the road here in Berlin.

My indoor mushroom gardening experiment was successful. I got a large batch of delicious golden oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) as my first harvest. And they are so pretty, too!
