Just read this take-down of effective altruism by Leif Wenar, and found myself nodding vigorously in approval while reading it. It's entertaining & philosophically rigorous at once (great for teaching btw), highlighting the limits of 'expected utility' rationality.

My commentary on Clarke-Doane's book 'Mathematics and Morality' has appeared in PPR #OpenAccess: 'The relevance of salience for the epistemology of mathematics'. Broadly speaking, it's an application of the epistemology of attention to math.
I ask: why do we become interested in, and pay attention to, certain mathematical concepts over others? The answer combines history of math, anthropology & more: math as intertwined w broader social, cultural and economic factors.

-> the fact that epistemic environments condition beliefs suggests that epistemic agency is significantly curtailed. I present a model of belief-forming processes that highlights how networks of attention and trust/distrust influence these processes. The model suggests that, while there is a lot happening beyond our control that shapes what we come to believe, we still retain some degree of agency to the extent that we can rewire our networks of attention and trust/distrust.

@npub13dl…qfg2 Wiskunde is natuurlijk heel veel verschillende dingen 😀 Maar als je kijkt naar de onderdelen van wiskunde die met bewijs te maken hebben dan gaat het idd vooral om logica, en sterker nog, om DIAlogica, dialogen. (Dit was het onderwerp van mijn VIDI project.)
