Bed preparation for the new season in the #NoDig #VegPatch
I harvested the last parsnips, celeriac and carrots, raked the beds over and covered with a few cm of green waste compost from the council (certified for organic horticulture).
The new miditunnel was planted with garlic, lettuce, peashoots and pak choi.
Because the tunnel is made really cheaply, I wanted to call it cheap tunnel. My wife insisted that I should use the term "miditunnel" instead as it is in size between my tunnel greenhouse and last years minitunnels.
The original design of the tunnel wouldn't last a week in our climate. So I re-enforced the construction massively. Mostly I used stuff from last year's minitunnel.
Need to get a few things more ready as I have to get some minor surgery done this week. After that, there may be a #gardening pause for a few days or weeks. ☹️

@npub1eav…g6f3 Yeah, I know. Tell the planners...It's frustrating. It's easier to get a permission for a 100m deep well for geothermal than for a 6m deep one.
To put the heat exchanger down for near surface geothermal, I'd need to rip open too much of the garden, I guess. And I haven't got a clue about the red tape.

The #ClimateBattery sounds interesting @npub1gq5…yxjq !
Ten years ago, I tried to build a small #HeatSink in my old polytunnel to buffer the worst of the heat. It failed completely. Probably that was due to a lack of thermal mass.

A climate battery could be difficult around here. When I checked the other day, the water level was just 75cm below surface level. Firstly it would be tricky to get the pipes in and then they would have to be completely watertight to allow airflow.
What's your design?

You are right @npub1eav…g6f3 the two seas have a moderating effect in Schleswig-Holstein (the northernmost state of Germany).
However, unlike e.g. Italy there are no mountains stopping cold polar winds getting down here. So usually it's not that cold, but with the right winds we got down to -15°C (5F) a few days ago. The lowest temperature in the greenhouse in recent days was -7°C (19F). During the day it heated up to 10°C (50F).
And that is the tricky part for the plants. Just a week ago we had 10°C (50F) outside. There is no consistent cold winter temperature any more. With 10 or even 15°C (50-59F) sometimes in January/February, plants start shooting and get killed by -10°C in March/April.
So in some way our growing zone became milder like yours, but the cold snaps are the tricky part.

@npub1eav…g6f3 the cleaning time is where I'm cheating. That's part of the cooking, not the growing. 😉
So you are definitely right with your remark. Cleaning, pickling, drying, preserving or cooking the harvest is the major part time-wise.
Leeks were a bit tricky this year - and will continue to be so as allium leaf miner has arrived in both gardens.
Do you have any trouble with those guys?

I wouldn't let them roam around our home though, as some - rather all - gardens in the neighbourhood are quite manicured. Occasionally, one of the Orpington chooks manages to break free. They can devastate a largish flower bed in under half an hour. Luckily we always got them before they made it to the neighbours - so far.

@npub1eav…g6f3 So far I don't have experience with comfrey. In my no dig / no till gardens, I only use compost as fertilizer.
I saw several builds of comfrey presses on TV (e.g. Beechgrove, Gardening Australia). As my potplants still need fertilizer, that seemed a perfect fit especially for fruiting plants.
Today I filled the press for the first time. I'll keep posting.
Mastodon is great for gardening. I've learnt so much in the few months I'm here! So many generous people sharing their knowledge.

Every time I use ressources for the production of my crops, it's a balancing, self reassuring process, that my lifestyle is not as wasteful as the one of others. Hm.
However, it's not a law of nature that some guy in Northern Germany has to eat ginger or grow capsicum/bell peppers...
By pushing the limits what I can do, I push the limits of what I should do, too, sometimes.
@npub13q6…tcfa approach to grow natives is far better.

Today saw the start of my #comfrey "liquefier" project.
Most of the parts were lying around somewhere except 2 brackets for mounting the device on the wall and the caps.
A PVC pipe DN110 with caps fits exactly into a DN125.
So the DN110 pressing cylinder will compress the comfrey in the DN125 pipe and eventually liquid will drop out.
Now the glue has to set before the device is mounted to the wall of the shed and filled with comfrey.
The #fertilizer is only for my pot plants.

Boxes to left: yield of 1 bed planted in April 85.9kg (134,2 t/ha) humongous in size
To right: planted Oktober 2022 87.4kg (136.6 t/ha) normal to humongous in size
Average potato yield in Germany 2022: 40.1 t/ha

I was too curious about the sweet potatoes (underplanted under tomatoes) and lifted one. Not too bad. This year's Christmas dinner will see our own sweet potatoes.

Thanks @npub1eav…g6f3 What I call the market garden was our solutions for "too little space for all the veg that occupies a bed for a long time".
So our friends provided the land on their small hold and I do most of the gardening in return.
This means, veg that doesn't need my constant attention is a few km away. The stuff with more need for tlc is close at the house.
We are very lucky to have these opportunities.

There was not much time for the #MarketGarden recently.
There is still more than weeds to find. 🙂 However, the sweetcorn and courgettes needed to be cleared out.
If I were a commercial producer, many of the beds would have already been cleared and replanted. But we run the operation just for two families and friends.
After a very long day, the car was full of produce (too much for bike and trailer).
Tomorrow is open day in our private #NoDig #garden. Better get a nap.

@npub18lc…r7c7 We had some Chioggia the size of large oranges, that were still perfectly tender. Large golf ball size is probably on the safe side.
For the time, my experience says just before you want to use them, is the best time for picking. That keeps the foliage fresh, too.

@npub147c…27uk Sounds like a distraction to me. What is the percentage of disabled persons among owners of cars?
Let them keep their cars.
Cars are a problem we need to deal with - they are a major problem.
We live in the countryside (but not that far out to be honest) and gave up a second car - in a household of three licence holders.
The car, that is left, only does half the milage now as we try to combine trips which we cannot do with public transport or by bicycle.

We had some rain the last days, and the #garden looks lush.
Lots of things to appreciate and to be done - but I'm mostly in bed with flu for the 5th day in a row, probably still a few days to go. Short forays out and then back again.
The backlog of veg from the pipeline to be planted is getting bigger (as are the plants...).
I prefer my flu in Dec or Jan - #gardening planning can be done from the bed and there's not much to do outside.

Sorry, but if society collapses in the way predicted in the video, which army will defend the fruit of your apple tree?
If we reach a point of masses walking the streets hungry, it doesn't matter whether you are a master gardener or not. You will not have the means to defend your produce.
Prepping for collapse makes no sense.
