before they got acquired and turned into part of fedex, and particularly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, you could go into any Kinko’s copy shop and find yourself in a microcosm of frenetic energy very much akin to a dodgy night club in the middle of the night despite their being no alcohol, copious bright fluorescent lights, and bright colored walls. the place would be filled with grifters, hustlers, forgers, and temporarily embarrassed millionaires all making things happen, paying for paper by the page and compute by the minute, hurrying about while being derided by the staff for not knowing the lingo or how to operate the equipment like a bitter bartender whose been on shift for three hours too long dealing with drunk college kids. it was a whole scene and sometimes I wonder where it ended up migrating to.

I find myself regularly awed by the depth of knowledge Connor has amassed and derived on economics and geopolitics and I feel like he manages to do it again in this video, packing a whole crapton of pretty complicated context - data-bearing context even - into a very short amount of wall time in order to really support what he’s trying to convey all while being comprehensible and entertaining. and he does this between runs to drop off coffee and toy shipments that need to go out and making sure the vendors at the antique mall get their checks and a half dozen other things. Truly amazing to watch him do his thing, y’all.

I’ve been watching @nprofile…e3ed work on the special report on the housing crisis for New Ellijay News for a few weeks and I’ve seen the amount of legwork he put into tracking down what brought the #Atlanta Department of Public Works to the point of killing Cornelius Taylor with heavy equipment as he laid in a tent, the only place he had found to rest.
It’s not a fun topic. It’s a horrible topic. But I think Connor has approached it from a point of empathy and a desire for accountability that are as admirable as they are necessary.
If you live in or near #ATL, or any USian community of any size frankly, you should take the time to watch this special report and hear Connor’s look at the situation for yourself. There’s a lot that can be learned from this reporting imo.
