before they got acquired and turned into part of fedex, and particularly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, you could go into any Kinko’s copy shop and find yourself in a microcosm of frenetic energy very much akin to a dodgy night club in the middle of the night despite their being no alcohol, copious bright fluorescent lights, and bright colored walls. the place would be filled with grifters, hustlers, forgers, and temporarily embarrassed millionaires all making things happen, paying for paper by the page and compute by the minute, hurrying about while being derided by the staff for not knowing the lingo or how to operate the equipment like a bitter bartender whose been on shift for three hours too long dealing with drunk college kids. it was a whole scene and sometimes I wonder where it ended up migrating to.
