@npub1y7p…66re The most Oregon thing that happened to us was: while driving back home, there was a queue of about 15 cars all stopped. Because a dog was playing in and around the street. No honks, no swearing, just patience.
(I and another driver did get out to see if we could get close to him, but he decided nah, and presumably went back home.)

Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of M. R. Carey's INFINITY GATE, which is my favorite hard SF book this year. (I wonder if he is on mastodon or bsky?) There are aspects that remind me of Swarm, and of @npub1psd…9sr7. It's a story about infinite parallel timelines, and an empire spanning it. And two other players, one very different from the others.
It is *great*. It is on my list for award nomination next year. I *highly recommend* this book.

Today is Rosemary Kirstein's birthday. She is an author you may not have heard of, and if so, you should have. She has a series of books about the Steerswoman (named Rowan), who is a character in an obviously-derivative fantasy setting, with low-tech settlements, wizards, dragons, trolls, and so forth.
The author has created a *rich* world with this setting, and thought *deeply* about the ecology of this world, which I wish far more authors would. I love the series.

Speaking of Waynes: we were driving to Apple one morning, on hwy85 by 280, and a hawk just flew by *super close and fast*. All I was left with was an impression -- quite possibly not real -- of beak open, talons extended forward, wings back. And then it was gone.
I really wonder how accurate that impression was -- I keep assuming it happened so fast that my brain just picked a similar image from memory and substituted it for reality.

I haven't read it, although I did grab myself a copy, but it's Ann Leckie, and therefore I assume it will AT THE VERY LEASE be interesting. (I may be an outlier, but I did much prefer THE RAVEN TOWER to the Radch books, however that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the trilogy! I enjoyed it enough to do this, after all.)
