a machine that comes to mind is the xerox alto. Since curious marc worked on it the schematics are somewhere.
For me the bitslices save on chip count to implement the math, but you still have to do the instruction decoding and sequencing. This is what stopped me when I wanted to implement mil-std-1750 with ttl chips (just the schematic was not easy to design so I let that go).

job control and console management do a lot and it's not completely obvious at first sight. Who knows what setsid and setpgid do without looking at manpages? Who knows what a session leader is besides low level system programmers? The simplicity AND the efficiency of these simple identifiers is AMAZING. Yet this was coded once and for all and is now doing a lot of work far from the spotlights. Tbh I only discovered that only by coding an unix. It's completely hidden in plain sight.

after having had to write some iOS objective C with ARC I can say I much prefer manual memory management. Every "managed" stuff feels like a Damocles sword, because it's hard to make sense of what automatic mechanisms will actually apply to each objects. Manual Retain and Release FTW.

my own fatal error was to short a 1v2 line to a *dangerously close* 12v rail on a hermes lite. Instantly fried. The fpga is just a qfp, but with a bottom heat pad, and I have no way to remove it.

I see it used when calling the function:
[[Car alloc] initWithColor: @"red" andBrand: @"mercedes"]]
But the variable affected by this call is not andBrand, it's brand.
It's just a "call tag" ? Cant be that simple.

That is quite fun.
The STM32F446 as found in the nucleo boards is specified to 180 MHz.
I overclocked one up to ... 285 MHz! It is stable at ambient temp and 3.3V of supply.
At 288 MHz it boots, but quickly stops with a bus error.
At 300 MHz the PLL does not even lock.

design looks very fine to me. Except if you want to have it built by a factory, because of vias in pads. I like those, and they work for manual soldering, and increase density by a lot, but usual (non tented vias) reflow processes hate them because they suck the solder. But you probably know this already.
