@nprofile…5lc3 VPNs just need to die period. I also don’t understand why people keep security hardware devices around. Do people actually enjoy the emergency patching? Meanwhile VPNs are slow and introduce chokepoints when you backhaul your traffic. Why not just tunnel everything and only provide least privileged access via reverse proxy and/or SDP? Is the transition really that challenging?

💾 How do you document your homelab? 🏠💡
Do you have a structured system for keeping track of your setups? Are you a meticulous curator of computer configurations? A dotfile dilettante? A network note-taker?
I'm looking for sustainable, open-source-friendly ways to document and templatize system and network setups. I really am only interested in something easy to maintain, not tied to a specific proprietary tool, and useful for both tracking infrastructure state and making changes over time.
How do you manage this? Markdown wikis? Git-based IaC? YAML sprawl? Hand-etched stone tablets? Drop your thoughts, workflows, or favorite tools! 🚀🔧

My extra cool #minisforum Elite #MiniPC UM890 Pro arrived last weekend, and now it’s time to wipe Windows 11 (what a horrible excuse for an OS, it’s plastered in ads and continually seeking to violate my privacy), and setup a proper #homelab host OS and #container situation. I see people using #Debian (old packages), Ubuntu (resource heavy but familiar), #ArchLinux (neck-beardy), and #alpinelinux (lightweight) for the host #OS. Some people use Docker for running the containers, and I see others who are into Podman (can’t use docker-compose). Finally, I’ve recently run into proxmox, which is a widely-used hypervisor software that can run multiple VMs and back them up easily. I am thinking #proxmox running #Ubuntu running #Docker containers, for my main hosting #VM. That’s probably going to be the simplest to setup, document, secure, monitor, backup, and support, and I have plenty of RAM for this kind of setup. I am just wondering if using an eGPU will work out well if I were to use this machine for any ML processing 🤔

Chronicles of Narnia were the first books I read on my own, probably read the whole series 7 times. Ursula Le Guin is simply a masterful writer. The others are new and being added to the list 🙏🏻😁

I’m trying to create a list of good books that teenagers should be reading before they head off to college. There is a decline in literacy and readership amongst the younger people and we would do well to come up with some great books that are hella engaging for growing minds. I would love to put together a social media campaign across the web.

It’s one thing to get people to swarm together at scale, and another to get a list of three things we all agree need to happen and just stick with that. My God, we can’t even agree on what to eat for dinner. There’s little to no hope for distributed agreement without new tools or skillsets.

I just want to pause for a moment to appreciate the fact that we have this distributed #socialnetwork and don’t need to fear it being taken away or monopolized. I think that is the best outcome out of the last several years. I am excited by the potential of the #fediverse to help communities weave together patchworks of resistance and subversive thinking, and eventually swarm together to foment societal transformation. We have barely scratched the surface of this capacity.

Things I would actually want my OS to do for me:
Auto-organize downloaded files
Re-organize documents folders
De-dupe my filesystem
Auto-delete crappy photos
Inbox aggregator
Voice memo to agenda conversion
Collaborative writing assistant
Auto-delete Internet accounts I don't use
Most of my ideas involve reducing my data footprint or improving my privacy, so of course big tech would never oblige.
(Maybe I can script a few of these up for myself)

I’m going to setup an instance on the #[1] to start drawing some friends off Facebook. In particular, my best friend who sells stuff she makes online and who has quite a significant following. She sells items in virtual sales in her Facebook group. We want to migrate a significant portion of her community, and others. I’m wondering if it makes sense to setup #[2] for this? Not sure we need the groups feature. Mostly need photo albums and for it to be easy to join.
