Founded in August 31, 1142, the history of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (Iroquois) speaks of their founding under a full solar eclipse. Western scholars only verified it in the 1990s. Indian Termination was a gov't policy from 1946-70 when the US wanted to end Native self-governance
A law passed by Congress on Aug 1st 1953, sought to end every tribe in California, Florida, New York, and Texas, and tribes like the Menominee Tribe (Wisconson) or Flathead Reservation (Montana) "at the earliest possible time”. Many Natives were also relocated off their lands. Over 3 million acres were stolen in this period

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of Martin Chambí's birth. An Indigenous photographer from Peru, his work centered on humanizing Quechua peoples and the leagacy of the Incas in Peru. This Indigenous artist has even been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), most famously in 1979 and 2022-2023.

For major good news before 2024, Indigenous peoples regained 3 million acres of their Iand bасk!
The land was returned throughout a decade at US gov't expense at $1.67 billion. It was an Indigenous victory after a class action lawsuit. Laguna Pueblo and US Secretary Deb Haaland said on this matter "We are in a new era for Indigenous peoples".

There was a secret plan in 1989 for a far-right military coup in #Peru called the Green Plan (Plan Verde). With pieces of it reported 1st by the journal "Oiga" on July 1993, revealed were military plans to create a military backed neoliberal gov’t like Pinochet’s Chile, persecute leftists, & mass sterilize Indigenous women. This outlined the dictatorship of Pres. Alberto Fujimori, founded on a 1992 miltary coup called the self-coup (auto-golpe). He's now going free.

Did you know Puerto Rican Independence leader Ramón Emeterio Betánces wrote a #taino novel called Los dos indios (The 2 Indians) in 1852? The novel details the life of 2 Taíno chiefs as they resist the Spanish invasion. Showing 2 #native strategies, the conciliatory and the militant. Betánces wanted to show that the Taíno spirit against the Spanish lived within Puerto Ricans independentists in his time. 16 years later, Betánces led the Grito de Lares, to free Puerto Rico. #indigenous #puertorico

Gahela Cari is a trans Afro-Andean woman from #quechua parents. She's the most visisble trans leader in #peru, appearing prominently against Manuel Merino’s failed legislative takeover in 2020. She’s also a leader of the party Nuevo Peru and attempted a campaign as the 1st #Native trans woman for congress. Her proposals were to expand trans & cis women’s rights and local agriculture. And, she continues her work today
