This is insanity! It's a dog whistle to massive carbon emissions. Tas. is at the arse end of the planet and anyone coming here needs a huge emissions footprint. Even experts are seemingly able to hold two completely different concepts in their head simultaneously; we need to take emissions seriously to protect it but we need to emit vast quantities to protect it. Locals aren't enough to support it, the state has a small population no useable public transport (smaller then the City of The Gold Coast) and is mostly poor, overwhelmingly old and poorly educated. (I live here)

I think this is a little naive, people vote this way for a reason. An example, people could have voted Green and had Caroline Lucas as the PM but that's not what they wanted.
Mostly people are greedy, stupid and apathetic. We didn't get to where we are with kindness, empathy, caring for each other and the enviorment around us. Why is Buck. Palace not a homeless shelter ? We'd rather eoole sleep rough and have a knob playing dress up live there. There is something deeply wrong with us.

The setups near me don't move the fencings, it's left in place and the electrical supply is turned off, the animals moved and the electrical supply turned on in the new section.
That said, becase of seasonality they keep stocking rates too high and supply external feed with plastic wrapped bails of hay and irrigation on the fallow paddocks to encourage extra grass growth in the hotter, dryer summer months.
I'd be sort of ok with it if they didn't overstock so much and rely heavily on externalities.
I'd rather the endless verdeant fields left for nature to reclaim though but alas there are too many of us..

It's always bemusing to me, as though this is a choice.
The only choice left is reduce emission s by collapsing the economy (preferably by the wealthy doing all the emitting) ,
OR
we collapse civilization. It's amazing to me we've deliberately chosen the latter becase we so hate cycling we'll destroy the world.
We've left it so long there's no time for an ordely transition with nonsense like ecars, we need something like 10% a year reduction each year for a decade (way in excess of the 8% we saw under Covid)

While I agree with this, I would like to point out that green growth isn't about addressing Climate Chnage becase it doesn't, it's about maintaining the status quo.
It's impossible to replace fossil fuels with renewables (Vaclic Smil etal) no matter the entitled insistence of most in here who bleat on about ecars etc and any proposals invariably involve the rich continuing to destry the planet.
Actually addressing Climate Change would help significantly with many of the other issues but what an actual 10% emissions reduction per annum looks like is never discussed , just draw a chart with a vertical line and be done with it.
The first thing would be to ban flying, private jets and advertising. That could be done in a few weeks if we treated this like an actual emergency..
That aside, there is NO chance of addressing climate change let alone other issues with a nation state competitive model of the world, none. I had some hope with the EU model.
We can't even engage in an honest discussion let alone act on it, certainly not in the time frame needed ( 2035 or so) Entitlement, bullshit and blustering is all we have.

I don't agree with the authors premise that there's "a way out" per se, this is not a science or engineering problem, if it was we would have solved it long ago. It's a human behavioral issue (as is pollution, environmental degradation, species loss, resource depletion, inequality etal) linked to greed, apathy and entitlement and short of us evolving into a new species, how to address that seems an issue we haven't much broached, aside from the various "eat the rich" memes but it's interesting to see more voices calling out the nonsense of COP and suggesting alternate approaches.
We still believe in gods and shoot each other about artificial boundaries like children drawing a line in the sandbox, what hope mutual agreement on massive emissions reductions ?

Have we though? Typically I taken that saying to mean we've made some good process but all the easy work was done first. (albiet I typically use low and not long, as in I'd "pluck" that before getting to the harder stuff)
But we haven't made any progress have we ? We haven't even even really retatrded emissions growth. We can see this by examining the Keeling Curve. Everythibg we're doing is wrong and yet some still think if we jist keep doing the same thing the same way, we'll get a different result.

Most N2O is from the application of artificial fertiliser. Soil microbes produce it when fertlisier is applied. Artificial fertiliser use is expected to double by 2050. As the Nature article below points out, even if we cut CO2 to zero the continued N2O emissions alone would push us over 1.5c becase we use so much fertlisier.

Lots of reasons to plant trees, especially in cities as we rid them of cars (including ecars) to lower the urban heat island effect for example but for CO2 reduction, not so much

Not sure I agree that's what she has done?
Those are symptoms of our actions so they deserve some mention of course but if she'd said the ocean is heating from the deliberate policy choices of governments the majority elected (poor acess to public and alternate transport etc) and the everyday high emitting lifestyles of the worlds wealthiest 10% then I'd say yes, that's how journalists (not scinetiests) should write about it.
It's NOT being communicated that this destruction is wrought by deliberate policy choices and the actions of a small minority. To have any chance we have to leverage action againt them by how you vote to force them to stop destroying us all. The top 1% have double the emissions of the bottom 50%, that's who is causing this!

Everyone "needs" electricity, no one needs to fly, we can plan to stop in a couple weeks
It's why it can and should be cut, starting with private jets.
Bit unethical to tell a sweltering Indian they should not install AC while we jet over there to tell them that before heading to Thailand to lie on the beach.
Worldwide flying emits about as much as Germany and has more emisisons then all of Africa.
Cycling is a given, as is banning private cars, and adding electrified PT. We have no time left to feck about.
40% of shipping is moving fossil fuels about, so there will be a massive decrease in shipping emisisons if we stop moving coal, gas and oil around.
Then we habe the thorny issie of 100s of millions of climate refugees, my solution is nmto open borders evwrwheree and let the people go where they need/must but alas it appears we've decided to let them die or to poit then somewhere else, ike dogs.

What's most concerning is not the temp increasing, that's just physics and was forseen decades ago, so it makes sense. That the people causing this will turn their AC up a notch and drive to work tomorrow ignoring it all, just as they did in the decades preceding this is more and more difficult to accept.
More then a decade ago I quit work, left my then wife, moved thousands of miles and started planning for the worst climate outcomes while still hoping for the best, made some mistakes on the way, learned from them and kept going but what I never envisaged is the complete denial of the consequences by the people causing it, this denial is so ubiquitous I have yet to meet in real life anyone who takes climate change serisoily.
I did this deliberately, not to esacpe climate change but just hopefully not be at the head of the queue on a flood plain, or in the heat of the tropics etc bit to do nothing ?
Even as jaded as I am, the complete lack of shits given by the world's richest 20% who are causing this with how they live their daily lives and how they vote has gone from surreal to outrageously bizzare.
When inevitably the shit hits the fan I will struggle to have any empathy for their plight while millions in Africa, Pakistan, Asia, South America, India etc who had no hand in this, suffer and die everyday.

To add to this excellent article and point, there is a interesting co-interview with Professor Jason Box @npub1rqz…vh50 about the "faster then expected" meme, particularly in relation to ice melt and his perception in why its faster. He agrees with David Spratt that it's an over reliance on models which are conservative and not also looking more closely at paleoclimatology and what's happened in the past at these levels of CO2 and Temp.
There's a poignant bit where at about 38mins the young interviewer cries at Professor Box's revelations about ice melt and he points out that " yeah, it really sucks"... I think that encompasses the situation quite succinctly.

An Australian farmer who had sheep under solar raised a extra point I hadn't considered, the morning dew condenses along the panels and falls along the drip line providing him with extra feed in times of drought, he said it really helped. (Not his farm in the photo)
I was reminded of those South Americans, high in the mountains that used fine nets to catch the mist similarly to collect water.
It's why I am appalled when we clear the bush for solar farms here in Australia, we have farmland and endless acres of roofs (commercial, Industrial, shopping centers, homes) to fill up yet, let alone endless amounts of desert here in Aus. Eg around Eromanga which still extracts a little oil and has infrastructure (roads, a small town, workers to transition etc)
