It took way too long, but I finally remembered to buy a watermelon when I ordered groceries.
Got a huge one that'll last four days and might be the juiciest melon I ever had. Definitely a great treat for the 33C today. 🥵

@npub16mz…hm5n What has helped me while listening to podcasts was increasing the playback speed. Somewhere between 1.2 and 1.8x, depending on format and people involved.
I haven't tried it with fiction audio books yet. The immersion might suffer, but maybe less so than by being inattentive? 😄 But whatever works, works. :)

So, here's a question that I can't really check on myself: How well does #ChatGPT work in your/not-so-common/non-Western language(s)?
For me, it works way better than Google and Deepl for translating English to German, but it already falls a bit short in German when it comes to rhymes or puns. Grammar is very on-point, though.
So I'm wondering: how well does it work with smaller languages like Finnish and Swahili or big non-Western ones like Japanese, Chinese or Arabic?

One of the (main?) reasons why we still remember philosophers from ancient Greece: They had time to think, converse, discuss and articulate. They had this time because the ideal citizen (= free man) didn't work, or at least not hard. They had slaves to do that.
We could, at least partly, have the same luxury today. Even without the moral concerns! We have #technology: robots, algorithms, “#AI”.
Imagine if we had built societal systems where people rejoiced that those took over their labour.

Today I learned: There's a current scientific best practice to cook rice when it comes to the endpoints “removal of pollutants” and “preserving nutrients/minerals”.
TL;DR: Cook rice with excess water (ratio about 1:4) for about five minutes, drain and discard the water, add fresh water (typical ratio for full absorption), bring to a boil and cool for the remaining time.
Apparently, this is more effective than washing and soaking. Method works for brown and white rice.

As Spotify Wrapped is trending and as you hopefully know about the benefits of decentralised services (being here and reading this): If you happen to primarily listen to podcasts via Spotify, I'd like you to consider switching to a proper podcatcher.
It keeps the infrastructure alive, reduces the incentive to publish in a walled garden, gives Spotify less power over creators if they chose to execute a Twix/Reddit/... maneuver and is more privacy-friendly.

Back in January, when I still had energy to read, I coincidentally got in touch with @npub16uc…k62q and became a beta reader for her book »Wild Flowers, Electric Beasts«.
Knowing neither Alina nor her work, I didn't have any expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. It's a beautiful SciFi/Fantasy mix and given that I read it before feedback and editing, it probably only got better since then. 😉
The book is out now and if you opt for the paperback: The artwork is gorgeous!

@npub19dj…n6qc What really surprised me about it was this little sentence in a medical overview for POTS. Like, “take it every four hours, but don't lay down for 4–5h afterwards.“ Umm, so never lay down unless sleep? 😅
Seems like a pretty hard line, as CFS and OI require me to lay down frequently throughout the day.

@npub19dj…n6qc I'm seriously baffled that none of them want to learn. I understand the systemic incentives, but for a profession that's so deeply rooted in science, it's still pretty disheartening. I have had a few more stories like that during the past months, most of us have, I guess.

I've been pretty quiet for quite a few months, mostly because my health has been in decline.
Long story short: I never fully bounced back from my infection back in March. After months of jumping through medical hoops & my symptoms getting more pronounced, it's quite clear that I've become part of the #CFS / #MECFS / #LongCovid community.
Impossible to know where this journey is headed, but needless to say that it's already a long and frustrating detour from my original plans.
