For what it’s worth, Sparrow Solitaire is *the* reason why Playdate has, conversely, started feeling really fun again for me. That game is a masterpiece.

We had decent auroras one night during our time in Lapland, which I’m really happy about because my partner also got to see them for real. The moon was bright and washing out the sky, but on the other hand, it lit the snowy landscape in the foreground for pretty cool results.

@nprofile…jpfa Based on quick googling it seems like this is not part of the operating system on those platforms, apps need to specifically implement this behaviour. If I’m developing a Mac app, I can drop a standard multiline text area in a window and it will support this out of the box, which is why it works in so many Mac apps.

To this day, one of my favourite Mac tricks is the ability to select and edit parts of text on multiple lines at once. To do that, just hold down the Option key and draw a selection rectangle with the mouse, and suddenly the cursor is active on all of the lines at once. It works in most apps that use the system text editing APIs.
Take this example of four lines of JavaScript, where I want to change a variable name. I can of course do a find/replace, but sometimes this is just much faster 💪

So many M4 MacBook Pro “reviews” on YouTube gushing over the nano-texture display like it’s the second coming of [insert religious character], yet none that I’ve seen have made any attempts to find out how it holds up in everyday life. What’s the fingerprint situation like? Is the Apple Polishing Cloth effective remedy? Is everyone just afraid of touching it? I want someone to put this thing under a microscope and compare to all the other nano-texture displays from Apple.

- 15”: from May 2006 until it was discontinued in October 2013, except for the Late 2008 model which only came in glossy.
- 17”: from its introduction until it was discontinued in June 2012.
No choice for any PowerBook & iBook (all matte) or MB, MBA, MBP 13” (all glossy).
Glass in front of the screen:
- MBP: all unibody models with glossy screens & all Retina models.
- MBA: all Retina models.
- MB: Late 2008 & 12” Retina models.

1: During the PowerBook/iBook days, all Apple laptop displays were matte, so it was an easy choice 😇
2: Any MacBook with a shiny black display frame has glass as the outermost layer (laminated to the panel if it’s a Retina display). iOS 18 Photos app has evolved in some good ways during the betas, but it still doesn’t really work for someone like me who finds things visually and spatially.
“Recent days” is a good idea but still needs a way to permanently show all items, instead of doing a summary. Even if you tap into a photo, the film strip still won’t scroll through all of them – the only way is to tap the button in the lower right in the grid and select “all”.
Also, what is the use of summarising 9 items into 6 anyway?

I’ve seen an awful lot of people this weekend celebrate the “last day of summer” because we’re rolling into September. This has never resonated with me. Today feels just as much like summer as yesterday. It doesn’t have to end with a calendar appointment.

One of the things that bothers me about the new Photos app is the heavy emphasis on the system picking a photo or a set of photos to represent a particular collection of items. It makes me feel like I’m not in control, like I might just miss the thing I’m looking for because the system has decided what to highlight and what to downplay. It looks fancy but doesn’t fit the way my brain works. Give me all the items in a regular grid so I can scan visually like I’m used to.

When creating online systems where people are supposed to enter their names, don’t assume that if it contains “special characters” it’s not a valid name. If your systems are so archaic that they don’t properly support Unicode, replace those characters after I submit the form. Don’t make me guess why my name isn’t a valid name.

I don’t want to read your blog posts or emails you didn’t actually write. I don’t want to talk to hallucinating customer service chatbots. I don’t want a TV to “enhance” the picture based on what it thinks I’m watching.
ML/AI has legitimate and cool use cases, but the stupid “AI all the things” gold rush needs to calm down. Those computer resources are better spent elsewhere, or not at all.

@npub1p9k…865w Pretty sure it has a lot to do with how they implement fast charging (Voox, Warp, Dash and whatever other names they have for it), where some of the circuitry that normally gets hot in the phone end is actually in the brick instead, away from the batteries. I do not really know _why_ that means it has to be USB-A, but it’s at least very far from the PD standard.
