got help from llm to make this readable but here, let me know if you see any issues in the story:
2 years ago, some people started to exploit taproot "contracts". they basically used OP_FALSE OP_IF to create unreachable code in the contracts and place none code, arbitrary data in it.
this is bad because a bitcoin node has two storage types, one is the blockchain, we all know how it works. other one is the state store (aka utxo set), state store holds the information of the current state of the network. so you can prune blocks, but you cant prune state data. since spammers store the data on fake contracts, they are stored in the state store, because a contract can be used at any time, you cant prune them. as you can imagine this made running a node harder. and if this keeps going it would make bitcoin less decentralized, and you cant suddenly run a node on your laptop.
fast forward 2 years, spammers took advantage of this exploit and started to spam the chain, making the UTXO set explode in size.
now the juicy part, bitcoin always had something we call mempool filters since the early days. they always got updates as the exploits like these appeared. and they did a great job, made it harder for spammers to do these things on the blockchain, and basically annoyed them so much and made them stop.
and as always 2 years ago, just before these new exploit got bigger, some of the devs were quick and created a PR for it on the core's repo updating filters to block this new exploit, like the many others before. but then bunch of spammer came and complained on the PR, and The Core said "this is controversial we are not merging this update".
but first lets not forget, these filters dont change the consensus rules, that would be dumb. all this filters do is filter spam txs from your node's mempool, but if a miner broadcasts a block with that tx in it you dont block it of course, that would split the blockchain. so its all about stopping the propagation of the tx in the network, basically making it harder for them to reach a miner. so they have to go to the miner directly in those cases, which would make their process more complex and expensive, eventually stopping them.
so now lets remember, we had a solution 2 years ago already, core didnt merge, but now this exploit harmed the network enough, made the utxo size explode in size. they wanted to find a solution to it, but their solution wasnt updating the filters to block these txs. no their solution was removing a filter on OP_RETURN.
what is OP_RETURN? well basically this stores the data on the block itself, not the state store. so nodes can prune them. which is better. and the default setting on the OP_RETURN filter was 83 bytes, so allowing only 83 bytes of data on the OP_RETURN.
so basically their solution is "remove the filtering limit on the OP_RETURN, so spammers use that instead of useing OP_FALSE OP_IF and storing on the utxo set (aka state store)".
even worse, they wanna remove the option from the settings page, so you cant even lower the limit yourself. they take away your say on the network.
but the argument is why are we allowing these on the base layer at all? we have working filters, why are we not applying them?
funny thing is 2 years ago their first argument to reject the initial filter update PR was "this topic is controversial". well "removing the OP_RETURN limit" is also controversial, but they pushed it anyway. so there is clearly something fishy happening, there is some clear incentive.
another funny thing is, these spammers are too aggressive that, they store the whole image on the chain, not just a hash to it, which would fit in the 83 bytes OP_RETURN. sha256 is 32bytes, that means 83 bytes is more than enough to prove something on chain. thats how many second layers use OP_RETURN. only reason you would wanna store the actual data on the chain would be that you wanna use the chain as CDN.
so worse part is removing OP_RETURN by force completely would mean that if you are running a node, your pc has to download these jpgs, and pass them around even if they dont end up on the block. they can fill up your whole mempool space leaving nothing for actual txs. so actual txs would hardly reach to the miners. not to mention this would eat up your bandwidth more. basically making running a node slightly harder.
so some might argue that, nodes already listen to miners, so what is the purpose of these filters on your node? well as i said it would stop them from eating up your bandwidth, but most importantly as i also said before, it would stop the propagation of these txs on the network making it harder to reach a miner, so they would have to go to the miners directly and this complicates things and adds cost. which stops the spammers.
if enough nodes have similar filters, they each can have a say what reaches to the miners. so if consensus is the static base law, mempool filters are the community.
another magical thing is, if a miner doesnt have similar filters to the rest of the network, when they find a block, it takes more time for that block to reach to the other nodes, which delays verification of their block, so if in that time another miner with similar filters to rest of the network finds a block, they win. so it also adds cost on the miner's side as well. so they have to charge these txs more when they reach to them directly. which also disincentivizes/annoys the spammers more.
lets say we did nothing, and bitcoin core didnt change too. what happens? well as these kinds of txs gets more popular on the bitcoin's base layer, it brings more people who are interested in doing these types of stuff into the ecosystem, which makes them add more things like these to bitcoin, which brings more people like them, which creates more things like these. its a downward spiral.
it becomes harder to run a node for various reasons, because keeping or making running a node possible on laptops or phones wouldn't be anyone's priority anymore. they care about other stuff, like monkey jpgs on the base layer, maximizing decentralization is not their goal.
being able to run a node on your laptop what makes bitcoin different, it runs on mine. if we lose that we have nothing left. base layer's priority suppose to be being decentralized, easy to participate in, easy to follow, and be a part of, nothing else should trump that.
which would let other layers to focus on being fast, private, cheap and more, because they can fallback to this secure base layer for security, in the worst case scenarios. if you start treating base layer like its a second layer, you would sacrifice its decentralization, trust, and security and everything would fall apart.
so it matters what node you run what filters you have. because running the wrong one, making the wrong group responsible for its future updates would also make running a node impossible.

i was thinking about having a podman and docker compatible image on the repo distributed with ghcr.io. that runs the node directly over tor. without doing any settings.
so you can just set it up easily with podman, docker, distrobox, toolbox, etc.
distrobox can even export the qt launcher to the host. making it run like a normal app on the host.
things like BoxBuddy makes the UX great.

it can be a flatpak with tor built-in.

idk when we decided building on base layer was a good thing.
bitcoin doesn't live on the aether. it lives on the people's devices, or suppose to. that's what makes it special and decentralized. its a slow, small but secure trustable event queue for major monetary events.
then we have layer 2s and layer 3s recently, that eventually fallback to base layer for its security in the worse cases.
the node software should be designed to run on your personal computer or phone. each update, each change, each decision should reflect that.
just like nostr relays and clients try to stop spam, the bitcoin node running on your device too by default, like it was trying since the early days.
bitcoin is not a blossom server. when i run a node i dont expect to download and serve some memes. im not your cdn.
you can't abuse node runners, because then all your nodes run on aws.
as i said main goal of any node software should be making it easier to run on pc and phones. that should be the target device. and you should work in the best interest of node runners. it should get easier to run a node as the time goes by, not harder.
node runners are not your resource, they are your users.

knots is a core fork.
they both work by just double clicking on it.
but you either need tor or do port forwarding in order to become a real useful node.
using just tor is easier.
it's really simple, not 3 clicks, but shouldn't take more than 3 minutes.
- install tor.
- uncomment two settings from to config file.

- install knots gui app, and run it.

didn't know about blossom before. looks promising.
i think where blossom is strong is its easier to implement in few hours. and more lightweight. more cdn like.
ipfs a bit more complex, but good side is, well-known gateways share content between each-other fast without something like /mirror.
if the hash were compatible/convertable it would have been great. then you can ask for the content on both blossom cdns and ipfs gateways. also blossom cdns can also seed the content on ipfs. and etc.

anyway I checked blossom, (first time hearing about it).
seems similar to what i was thinking with ipfs.
but instead its a cdn protocol basically, i think. didnt deep dive in it yet.
so i believe its like a normal cdn but hash based and has a known format, endpoints. so you can extract the hash (like i said in ipfs). and then check other blossom compatible cdns.
and of course user can give list of blossom cdns on their profile as well.
tbh blossom looks more lightweight and easier to implement for already existing cdn solutions. i see no problems with it.
seems like a more lightweight solution. i liked it.
i still see no problem with supporting both or more. similarly you can share a media with a https ipfs gateway URL, so it works everywhere.
and then while viewing extract the hash and check multiple other gateways with that hash as well using HEAD method.
which would also make those gateways search for the content. distributing the GET traffic more later when more users ask for same thing.
but yeah blossom looks nice, maybe better.

there is a reddit and 4chan like social media protocol on ipfs, its a bit more wild west. it uses pubsubs.
but its nothing like nostr, nostr is more profile based, and a lot more closer to regular social media. just better in general.
and ipfs problematic when you share something alone from your own node, it takes a long while for others to discover it. but sometimes it also works fast, just like that.
i think one problem with nostr right now is all media is just http links to a cdn.
they are not distributed, and link have nothing to do with the content, makes it impossible to verify. so i think sharing a hash instead of some random centralized id makes more sense. and we already have ipfs hash and uri. so if we shared ipfs uri instead of http url i think it would just work.
like relay lists, we can also have ipfs api and gateway lists. clients can ask all of the gateways for the content until finding it at one. ipfs gateways allow HEAD requests, so you can know if the content exists and its size before fetching it.
you can easily backup/pin your own content on another gateway you pay for as well if you want to.
main thing is its hash based, and distributed.
right now if i post a media on primal, they will host it via their cdn, and all of the other nostr clients will fetch it from a url to that cdn. cdn can censor, remove the content, and in the future even cdn itself can shutdown. there is no way to access that content other than that cdn. but and ipfs uri is hash based, so anyone can host if for you. if the content is lost, you can verify it again once you find it, etc. primal can just host an ipfs gateway instead of a regular cdn.
i know not many clients support ipfs, or have a list of ipfs gateways to use. but what you can do is share an a gateway https url, and anyone can still parse, it and say that "its an ipfs url".
ipfs url formats are known, it can be in bafy subdomain type or bafy and Qm type with /ipfs/ pathname prefixes. you can extract the hash from there and try it on multiple gateways. and clients that doesn't support ipfs would still work, because its basically a https url to an ipfs gateway.
i plan on hosting one in the future for nostr, with my own client.

the problem with writing is that nobody writes nothing or repeating actions. even day in life kind of stuff, always something happens.
and the problem with writers is they are always trying to tell something, show you something, instead of just creating a world and let it run.

many linux "hardcores", dont like the things that made me come to linux.
they will tell not use GNOME, they will tell you to keep away from flatpaks, they will recommend you some traditional distros which are hard to make changes on safely.
they will act like if you dont wanna open the terminal, all you will do in the pc is browsing the web and playing games without exceptions.

If Linux now with GNOME and Flatpaks, Atomic distributions and many other amazing things didn't existed, I wouldn't have switched to Linux permanently 3 years ago.
I'm not with Linux because "i don't wanna use Windows". I'm using Linux rn, because it's what i have been looking for in an OS for a long while.

New users should be introduced to Linux with Atomic images instead of traditional desktops.
UBlue images such as Bazzite and Bluefin are a great start, everything works out of the box.
If you are already familiar with Linux, i would recommend going with vanilla silverblue, if you want a system that is more vanilla.
I also would recommend GNOME for new linux users instead of KDE.
People will get mad at me but GNOME is so much nicer and a smooth experience.
Vanilla Silverblue and Bluefin already comes with GNOME and if you are gonna use Bazzite, there is GNOME option there as well.
GNOME+Silverblue Linux experience is better than Windows and MacOS experience overall. It's not something you use when you wanna get away from Windows only, its overall a better experience.
GNOME Extensions, Flatpaks, AppImages with GearLever, Wine with Bottles, Wayland Portals, and many amazing good looking Flatpak apps. Amazing experience.
It's not what Linux should be, it's what an User OS should be.
