I thought RAW/DNG was a codec/container-format kind of thing?
Like, RAW rules the representation, which is stuffed into DNG. So you could have a DNG and not be able to do much that's useful with it because you don't understand the producing camera's flavor of RAW.
But I am the opposite of an expert and I may well be wrong.

Asking for a me, because a student assignment revealed that I need to address this. (Don't worry, I didn't ding their grade over something I forgot to discuss.)
