Emptied out the dog pool on the deck, heard a weird noise... Apparently half of it poured directly into the sun room instead of going down the drainage channel.
On the bright side, I removed a bunch of trash from the sun room and the counters are cleaner than usual now. I'm just going to pretend they're sparkling clean and not sparkling from kiddo's slime mess that he was washing off in the dog pool...
And since I left my child unattended with the hose, the plants are watered and so is the dog.

Small garden bounty today: raspberries and what we call golden raspberries. I think they're salmonberries but my kid loves Minecraft so he considers these like the raspberry equivalent of golden apples. They're incredibly delicious and do feel like they should be a special item. 🍎

Need some bird help!
My 6 year old says he saw a kiwibird, but we live in Oregon, USA. I'm trying to find similarly shaped birds to show him so we can figure out what it was but although we loved the woodcock dance videos (thanks Mom!) they don't live on this coast. Any other ideas?

Tell me about your favourite #Rust learning resources.
My initial goal is more "understand Rust security" rather than "write things in Rust" but I'm not adverse to learning development. It's just that architecture, design choices, ecosystem and community likely matter more to me than "how to write an if statement."

Continuing in today's rainbow theme: the Dread Pirate Kid's rainbow sweater is done! 🌈
This is his design: he chose the colours, told me how to do the stripes, and chose 8 different buttons. (I'm going to have to buy more with animals on them!). I used Tin Can Knits' Flax pattern as a base for his vision with a lot of mods. He likes the thumb hole in the sleeves. 👍🏼
I don't actually expect it to get much use as he tends to run warm, but he wore it for a bit today!

My book:
How to Find a Princess was the #queerromanceclub pick this month. It was definitely romcom movie level ridiculous in a fun way, but I found the main character's doormat tendencies kind of too second hand embarrassment painful to read so it wasn't my favourite. There were some great scenes though, and I loved the fancy-with-budget-cuts banquet with terrible hors d'oeuvres final wrap up and reveals at the end. 😂
Kid video:
Kid did indeed get all the Dragonball Z the library had on the shelves. He was delighted by seeing familiar characters but honestly the plot didn't seem to be doing much for him so it was more background noise while he did other stuff after the first episode.
Kid books:
The whole whale: a hit for finding all the hundred animals in the book! 🐋
Pirate Boy - cute "what if?" Pirate story with a boy and his mom. ☠️🦜
Emeraldalicious - kiddo didn't want to read this one because school has taught him gender essentialism 🙄 but I convinced him to try even though it was "for girls" and it was about using a magic wand to make things out of trash and had things to find in the trash, two of his favourite things! So it was a huge hit in the end and he spent forever looking at every picture in detail seeing what was hidden in the trash
The Super Hungry Dinosaur - got to find a way to keep the dino from eating everything! Great art. 🦖

Roll roll roll. I do my quilting on a standard machine without a long arm, so there's a lot of feeling like I'm making sushi rolls involved in the process. 🍥 One of these days maybe I'll pay a professional to do this part but for now I do the whole thing myself!

Saw my first open daffodil today, so it's time to start #DailyDaffodill up for the spring!
For those of you who haven't followed me in the past: I live in an area where there are so many daffodils that I started a personal art project to post a different daffodil photo every day for as long as they last in spring.
By traditional social media metrics, my daffodil posts always got "low engagement" but friends around the world started taking pictures of daffodils they spotted at home or in their travels that made them think of me. I love that so much. 💛

Lucky me: today is the terrible combo of the worst cramps I've had in months + a headache + nausea. It's a rest and heat pack day.
When I woke up miserable this morning I was going to joke that my mom would immediately tell me the glory of menopause. But then the friend who does our cleaning/childcare on Wednesdays gave me the glory of menopause speech so I'm all taken care of emotionally and my kid has someone to play with while I nap now. 😂

I like to focus on stuff that'll bring me joy that I might not do without a goal that I look at regularly. This year's are..
1. Use the yarn I've received as gifts
2. Focus on some lesser used crafts (like tatting or Tunisian crochet)
3. Finally sew some pants (I got obsessed with skirts and shirts and haven't gotten there on my own)
4. Play with colour
Does anyone else do this? I used to see people do that instagram make 9 thing but this fits into my life more than specific projects would.

Does anyone have a favourite beeswax or other wood finish you'd recommend for knitting needles? These knitting needles are in need of refinishing as the tips are getting kind of rough. If possible, I'd like something I could buy in smaller quantities as I'm not finishing a whole dresser or floor.

I did have to go ahead and make my own beading tool out of fishing line after I couldn't find my beloved "bead aid," but after putting two beads on with a crochet hook I remembered why I don't use that method any more. Thankfully I did not have to do it 30 times.

A moment of appreciation for the colour palette of my book and my knitting matching so nicely.
Also, @npub1qjr…kgt0 's #yarnuary post reminded me: I learned to knit from a Klutz book in the car with friends on the way to/from the Very Large Array back when I lived in Albuquerque a bit more than a decade ago. There's a large cell phone/radio dead spot around the array so we had many hours in the car where all we could do was talk and I knit and reknit the same ball of yarn over and over again until my hands and brain finally clicked.

Got in a bit of time on the glow quilt today. I've got one more column of squares to assemble and attach! The white fabric has a glow in the dark lightning bolt pattern and it looks fantastic in the dark.

(in case you're not familiar with the phrase, it's a oft-used reminder in some parenting circles that not every kid learns things at the same age. Things like fire safety!)
That said, I think burning the goat somewhere safe and with supervision would delight my kid, so... Fun whole family supervised ritual after the theft has been achieved? 🔥🔥🔥
Who needs a yule log when you could burn the goat?

Saw a Tumblr post suggesting that in lieu of Elf On The Shelf and its surveillance state vibes, parents should place and attempt to protect a straw goat and kids should attempt to steal it (as fire and small children are a bad combo).
But I think we should hide treats in or on the goat and the kids should eat them instead, in honour of this year's Gävle Goat.
So anyhow, anyone got patterns for Gävle Goat shaped toys that I could put some chocolates in? I don't have straw on hand, but I've got yarn, fabric, a 3d printer and a 6 year old.

Heard some noise behind me as I was sitting at the computer and looked out in the hallway to discover that Hatch is enforcing his "If I fits, I sits" privileges on the clean laundry.
(The good news is that this is old kids clothing my mother in law sent that has such a strong detergent smell that it gives us headaches, so making it smell like dog would actually be an improvement and it was probably going to get another wash anyhow.)

@npub1y4n…jc6m I re-used it from this pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/good-as-hell (also available off rav I think)
But basically it's just "start the increases in the center of the sole" so if your sole is X stitches you'd knit x/2 - 1, place a marker, m1, k2, m1, place another marker, knit the rest of the way across. Then alternate plain rows and increasing just inside the markers until you have enough to do your heel turn.

Thanks to #FallFinishAlong I'm finally nearing the end of this cable section! I'm really happy with how the gradient/cable worked out, though I'm probably going to run out of blue and have to improvise for the couple of rows after the cable finishes before it switches to green.

My little towels have been blocked! So two finished objects for #FallFinishAlong today.
Pattern: Running Stitch Towels (free from the Gist Yarn website)
The brown colour was a substitute for a light blue that I probably would have liked better, but this works! This was my first time reading a weaving pattern, using cotton yarn on the loom, using my denser heddle, having two projects on one warp, doing hemstitch, and maybe a few other things. I learned a lot!

Love, Lies and Hocus Pocus - totally impulse grabbed this off the new releases shelves because I liked the cover, but found myself caught up in the mysteries of the two characters and where their magic comes from. Already got the next book out.
I Want Be A Wall - Asexual gay romance fangirl weds gay guy tragically in love with his straight best friend. Who is somehow their gardener. None of this is really explained but it's cute watching them figure out how to support each other.
Rock Manning Goes For Broke - tragic, funny, "gonzo" story set in a developing dystopia. I honestly don't know what I just read.
Spell Bound - Rook has been kicked out of magical society after the death of his grandmother because he isn't magic enough. His harebrained plan to rejoin his people is strangely... kind of working? Accidentally? And the non-binary apprentice of his new boss' competition is entirely too cute... Super cute queer magic romance. Incredibly sweet and cozy. 🪄💜 I think I'm going to have to pre-order F T Lukens ' next book as a gift to myself.
The Renaissance of Gwen Hathaway - Ren faire YA romance. Very sweet and a little bit magical. I wasn't in the mood for the main characters' body image issues, but they were age appropriate and probably resonate well with the book's actual target audience. I unfortunately had just read an adult romance with a more mature view of weight so going immediately to this viewpoint was jarring and a bit unpleasant. But I still enjoyed the book despite mentally screaming at the protagonist a lot. 😅

Guess who yanked the leash out of my hand and tried to chase the weirdest smelling skunk at midnight last night?
Here he is learning to play Munchkin with the Dread Pirate kid a few days ago when he was still allowed in the house. Don't worry, he's off getting a professional bath and I've ordered a new collar for him while we wash a lot of stuff and air out the house.
Believe it or not, this hasn't even been the exciting part of the day, just the most smelly.
