Just realised that on Mastodon, boosting *is* the algorithm.
There's no code trying to cleverly show me stuff it reckons I'd be into, based on what my contacts are into, instead my contacts are saying "I like this, I bet my contacts would like it too" and that is way smarter than any algorithm.

@npub1psd…9sr7 @npub15ea…a2ud the xenophobia is strengthening all across the western countries which sucks, exactly at the moment (probably because of) that waves of migrants need to find somewhere not war-torn or burned down or flooded out or in deep drought to live.
We need them. All these economies are trying to boost birth rates - don't - take migrants. Solves both problems of needing more workers paying taxes to prop up pensions, and the whole "issue" of immigration in the first place...

If there was a name for a Frontend Developer who sits ideally in front-of-the-front-end while also advising Design with regards Accessibility concerns, maybe UX here and there, and the feasibility of actually implementing the design ideas in code...
What would that role be called?
I get that Design Systems and the people who build them sit in this space. But still, what is that role called? And what if I'm not actively the one in charge of the design system?

@npub1vyp…aghx it's a double standard also a power thing and a racism thing.
If you lump all immigrants together, it's a group that's only "not-us" and they're likely to have very scarce things in common. Generalising "not us" can get dangerous, nationalistic and racist.
Often what people complain about as being an immigrant problem is actually a poverty and/or disenfranchisement problem and it's usually not their fault.
I'm an immigrant. Twice over. But I'm the "right" colour so it's cool 🤷

@npub1k4q…3lsq I've been watching a few American videos that have been so anti car in a way that I've found to be quite surprising - but I think what you've just said is why - because prioritising the car has really done a number on US cities. To some degree European cities too but nowhere near the same scale.

It's also such a vicious cycle - you make lots of parking space, people find it easy to park AND very hard to get from place to place without a car, because everything's so spaced out.
Also - even if things are in walkable distance, there's the assumption that all travel is by car. I stayed in one motel that was super close to a steak restaurant - I was like perfect, I can walk over, get steak and have a couple of glasses of red wine.
Could I heck - I tried. There was no sidewalk. No path.

So the few times I've been to the US - once to California (which admittedly is different, on vacation rather than work), once to Corpus Christi, once to Arkansas (near Memphis) - I found myself boggling at how much open asphalt there was between stores.
I wondered if it was just because they had the space to expand, so they just did. It didn't occur to me that there were minimum parking rules. It was always very easy to park. Everywhere looked sort of empty/unpopular.
