My jn-laws got upgraded from 15mbit fixed wireless to 200mbit fiber, but the ISP charges monthly extra for a router, so my jn-laws decided to keep their old router..... it's a Linksys WRT54G.
Fun fact, the WRT54G apparently can't even move enough data to keep up with the onboard 802.11g.
Ordered them some new stuff.

A word of warning to anyone who followed me because of that post about bypassing Microsoft account creation expecting more helpful Microsoft/Windows centric content.
That post was an aberration. I _never_ post Microsoft related tips, as I am hardly a user of Microsoft software. My day job doesn't force me to use Windows; we don't have Outlook/Exchange accounts, we don't use Office, Sharepoint, none of it. And I took this job because of that, because I am about fucking done with Microsoft in nearly every avenue of my life.
I found a workaround to some shitty behavior on Microsoft's part and posted it, hoping it would help a few people. Unlike the Linux techno-relgion, I recognize that some people are stuck using Windows still. In the end, that post cost me the time it took to block about 35 people screaming at me for "enabling continued addiction to Microsoft," and "to just use Linux!" The Linux techno-religious people annoyed me so much, I have deleted the post.
I design, build, unfuck, and maintain networks for a living. I use UNIX systems to handle the ancillary services that come with networks, most often FreeBSD. If you want to learn about those things, feel free to stay. If you followed me for Microsoft content, you'll be sorely disappointed.
And if you followed me in the false belief that I am some Windows user hoping to convince me to switch to the great and wonderful and perfect Linux..... just go the fuck away. I had to bury yet another battery in a bucket of sand in my yard for the same laptop. Fracking thing went all spicy pillow on me, again.
It wasn't even decent Linux centric hardware. The gorram Realtek on-board Ethernet was always dogshit slow. The wireless required me to use wifibox on #FreeBSD to get anything beyond 802.11g speeds. The speakers were tinty as hell, and the webcam was pathetic. It all worked.... barely.
I'm not paying for another battery. They took over a month the last time I needed a replacement. I'm going back to my Lenovo x230 from 2012, which is still far more reliable than anything I have wasted money on from System76.

Backing up the configs is a fracking shell script executed via cron. It's just a for loop that grabs the configs and set statements for each device on the network via SSH, ran however often I want it to. I stash them locally, and stash more copies remotely. Done.

Last night I dreamed I was dating a high school sweetheart. I had just informed her parents that it was true, that I was, in fact, letting her use my homemade patch cables. They were horrified, and did not approve of me not using store bought cables. So the entire dream was me demonstrating to her parents how to safely create your own patch cables. They regularly interrupted me about my choices to do things such as not use "protection," meaning those boot covers that supposedly protect the tabs. I explained how they are expensive, make the end connector more difficult to manipulate, and often fail to protect the tab anyways. They countered with, "You sound like all the network guys she brings home."
I had an entire network cable themed allegory dream about having a sex talk with a girlfriend's parents. I dunno if I should feel more traumatized, or amused.

Been juggling hardware, moving VMs and jails around, and I shoehorned myself into a bit of an odd situation.
I had two Intel NUCs, one is a weaker Celeron CPU, with a meager 4 GB ram. The other is a beast with a much better CPU and 32 GB of ram.
The one with the 32 GB and strong CPU has the easy job, and the weak one has the hard job.
The easiest solution was to swap their drives, and network cables.
The only software change I had to make?
sed -i bak s/re0/em0/g /etc/rc.conf
on the first one
and, shocker.....
sed -i bak s/em0/re0/g /etc/rc.conf
That was _it_. Both systems came up clean because the #FreeBSD network subsystem isn't a clusterfuck.
That doesn't work in Linux.

I wrote a tool many years ago, called it dokumatix.
I wrote it half because I wanted more flexibility in my note taking, and half because I thought it would be funny.
It's a UNIX command line, filesystem oriented, document creation system.
...
Allow me to explain.
You create an output directory, preferably on a webserver. I just run apache on my desktop. All your documents will appear here in a basic index.
Then, you create a new directory, cd into it, and run dokumatix -i. This instantiates a new document build tree. If you run dokumatix (no i flag this time) anywhere under this directory, it will rebuild the entire document and shove the output to the configured web root.
You create clickable sections of the document by creating directories in the format "XX-Section-Name" where XX is a number that will be used as a sort order. The dashes after will be converted to spaces, and the remaining name used in the document as section headers.
This supports nesting, and will create a table of contents at the top of the document. The body of the doc will also be created following the same structure.
Inside directories is the meat and potatoes. Files are created with the form "XX-arbitraryName.extension." The XX is again, used as a sort order, the name is ignored, and just for keeping the pre-document self documenting. The work is done by the extensions. There are about 30 options right now. The most basic is just .html, which just gets sucked into the final document. There are basic ones like .ulist and .olist, which make every new line in the file a new entry into an unnumbered or ordinal list. Images can be imported, .dot files are parsed by graphviz and converted to png format. I have created quote formats, iFrames, tables, you name it. Aside from images, the entire thing is basic text, and the most quote unquote markdown you may need is : for field separators in tables, return carriage for new lines and lists, and the occasional use of <b> or <i>.
It takes all of your files, sorts them, builds a TOC, and produces a consistent looking document. You build the entire thing with mkdir, cd, mv, cp, and your $EDITOR. Want to reorder some things? Rename files to change the sort order. Need a spell checker? Install one and run it. Want to make it print ready? Open it in your web browser and save it as a PDF.
I wrote this as a goof in the days after I left $weDropPackets in 2016 because I needed a project and it sounded funny. It has become my defacto tool for brain dumping. It works how my brain works; I like UNIX, it is very UNIX like. It even works well for final documents; I have successfully imported the HTML output into a WYSIWYG editor, tweaked it, and presented it to top tier management.
Does _anybody_ but me care? Be awesome to get some help with stuff I don't know well. Maybe introduce CSS support. I absolutely suuuuuck at HTML, and the stuff this thing produces might pass 3.2 validation.
Oh, and it is 100% Perl, and the original code was written while I was drunk.

Doing phone email support for real estate agents nearly broke me a few times.

Network I am unfucking in Maine had an issue. They tried to roll out a new VoIP subscriber in an area they had never done before, spent two days blaming magic (and #DNS) before calling me in.
I had never logged into any of the devices at this facility before in my life, didn't know how they were cabled, or even what was there.
Spent an hour and a half gathering credentials for things, mostly because they were slow in responding to all requests. Only spent about 20 minutes actually fixing the issue, and most of that was me remembering how to find a customer's port in an Adtran TA5000.
The problem as stated? "They can't resolve this host, foo.bar.com, it must be a DNS issue, but we can't find it."
Actual problem: the DHCP server config did not send the client a default route. Client could not resolve anything because it could not reach the DNS servers, nor anything else for that matter.
Added default route config to the DHCP server, found the customer in the TA5000, bounced their ONT port. Boom, headshot. Problem solved.
Tools I used to find this? ping, arp, route, and looking at the configuration. Before I got called in, they had gathered numerous packet captures, and provided all manner of useless supposition. Start simple, sometimes it is all you'll need. tcpdump is a great tool, but I never reach for it first. As for supposition, it's nothing but a huge waste of time, look at the facts. Can I ping this thing from the core? No. Can I ping this thing from the directly attached router? Yes. Okay, it doesn't have a route. Do I have a route for that subnet in the core? Yes. And so on....
Shit like this is why I despise the, "It's always DNS." bullshit.

DNS was operated for 755 days with zero service impact on my last watch. The only reason that number wasn't higher was because the company that bought my employer did not see the value in self hosting DNS.
It was a damn fine design, and it ran for 200+ more days post acquisition before they shut it down.

I have started using Kagi search, and am already loving their lens feature.
If you are unfamiliar, it's a way to focus your search beyond, "search the entire fracking index for this one thing," and so far really handy.
You can of course, make your own, so I want to make a FreeBSD-centric lens.

I'm looking for suggestions here. Sites that have good FreeBSD content.

Juniper's vSRX is a resource HOG.
4x CPU cores, and 8 GB ram:
Maximum speed I'm seeing? About 380 mbit.
Same host, #FreeBSD router with 2x CPUs, and 4 GB ram, and spending a huge chunk of that on ZFS:
4,800 mbit, and the host freely admits they are in dire need of another 10gigE link, minimum.
I loves me some JunOS, but god damn, the vSRX platform is dogshit.
My vSRX is technically licensed for six CPU cores, but that didn't make it much faster.

So we use Micro$oft, because Micro$oft is certified secure.
We can't use #OpenBSD, because that open source crap is never secure because it has no certifications!
But we can run #OpenSSH on #Ubuntu, because it has certifications!

I have a wireguard server inside my network that joins my OSPF and OSPF3 networks, and serves an IPv4 and IPv6 endpoint to my phone whenever I leave the house!
