It's.. tough.
I've had to watch my partner almost entirely shed all of her friends since she made the decision to be open about her relationship with a minor.
We all adore this kid, honestly. He's funny, smart, sensitive, and caring. And she puts so much effort into nurturing that relationship, because I've never seen her happier than when she's talking about him.
That said, the social isolation is so very painful. Especially since she's the kind of person that thrives on social interactions. Friends who have been with her for years, decades, who've helped her at her worst and who she's helped, are shedding without so much as a second thought.
I'm.. um.. fortunate.. that i have understanding friends who would love me regardless of what I did, and my relationship with my boyfriend hasn't been problematic in that sense.
But it's hard to see people continuously hurt my partner.. The girl I want to spend the rest of my life with.
This is why those of us who dabble in activism do what we do. So the people we love don't have to suffer like she is right now.

So, when I was really young, I had a friend. He was my only friend. He was my best friend. And he was quite a bit older than me.
I could escape to his house when my parents were fighting, I could stay the night with him when I didn't want to be alone, and he would teach me baseball, skateboarding, show me Runescape, and all this other cool stuff!
He also really, really liked touching me.
When our parents weren't around, he'd touch me in places nobody was supposed to touch. I didn't understand it, but it made him happy, so I did what he wanted me to.
It would be years and years later before I recognized those advances as sexual. And I certainly don't think that I had the capacity to consent.
But also.. I wasn't mad. The more aware I became, the less mad I was. If I'd had been taught the concepts of sex or consent, I would have eagerly done both. You see, I loved him. And the only aspect of this entire story that makes it traumatic is not knowing whether or not he loved me too.
Now, he's beloved. He's grown up. He has a family, a wife, kids, animals. And I'm happy for him, but the deepest parts of me miss him desperately. I can't help but wonder, had he or I been taught sex, consent, and love by our deadbeat parents, would we have had a chance at love?
I.. get why parents want to shelter their kids and I know how hard conversations surrounding those topics can be, but.. honestly.. not knowing what was going on while this was happening was far more destructive than the conversation concerning it would have been.
Kids, especially kids, have a right to know. And no arbitrary age where parents think they're mature enough to handle things is satisfactory. If you want your child happy and healthy, I strongly suggest making them aware of these things sooner rather than later and helping to guide their development so they don't have to live with the regret that he and I both do when there was a very real, very tangible chance at love.

One of the most uncomfortable experiences I have as an open MAP is this:
A lot of folks I care about, when they find out my affections and that I act on them, they leave in a flurry of insults and moral panic.
But slowly, over time.. On restless nights where they miss my companionship, they come back.
One by one. Full of apologies.
And I hate that.
Not because they apologize. It takes a lot of pride being swallowed to say sorry. Tbh, I admire that part.
The part that bothers me is the fact they focus on me so heavily.. "I missed you" "I never stopped loving you" "I didn't mean to hurt you"
When folks focus on me and my emotions, it makes me so completely uncomfy, not to mention the need to build back trust and everything..
And it feels so disingenuous anyway, because I know they /like/ me, but are TOLERATING my minor-attraction which.. is a huge part of who I am at this point.
Tl;dr - be genuine and don't obsess over people who are characteristically selfless. It's uncomfy

I understand advocating for a MAP's right to exist being the first frontier, but at some point we're going to have a serious discussion about adult-minor relationships and the natures of informed consent/youth liberation/and youth autonomy.
It's not enough to simply /not/ be persecuted. I want to be able to be open and proud of my relationship with my boyfriend.

I think something people don't understand about MAP's and AAM's is this,
It's really fucking hard.
Almost every MAP I know, if they could change one thing about themselves, would change their attractions.
It's not easy walking into a store and realizing that 99% of the people in that store would feel safer if you were dead or imprisoned. It's hard when elected representatives and government officials who are responsible for ushering protection and change are unified in their ideological opposition to your existence.
And when you factor in that a fair few of us have had our own trauma surrounding the very thing that casts a shadow over our day-to-days, memories of abuse as kids, or horrifying interactions with adults in positions of trust,
I don't know how you choose anything other than empathy. The generic moral panic faction that screams "k//ll all p//dos" is such an alien concept to me..
I've never wished death on anybody, especially over factors they couldn't control.
the tl;dr of this is that choosing kindness is essential, both within this community and abroad. Because a lot of us need it. A lot of us are far greater dangers to ourselves than to kids or adults.

as.. much as i relish the opportunity to be a safe space for folks struggling with their less conventional attractions,
one of the most unfortunate parts about being open as a MAP is people confessing, often unprompted, their most depraved desires.
Listen.. my dm's, while a safe place, are not a confession booth. And it may not seem like it, but I'm genuinely asexual.
