I get frustrated when folks get angry at others for being "not normal". I think "normal" people often assume that "not normal" people are attacking them or trying to invalidate them by being counter to their culture. Having tested a bunch of #OpenSource #LLM projects, I gotta say that OpenHermes 2.5 is the most helpful out of the ones I can run locally.
I recently wasted a bunch of time getting Phi-2 to do some summarization work, and it just couldn't stay focused for more than a sentence or two.

E.g. a client application would need extra apis specific to their sever to be able to get updates.
I'm into thick clients over implementation specific server APIs. 😅

I think it'd be cool if in addition the #ActivityPub client-server interface we had some sort of standard for accessing your timeline using Linked Data Framgents or something similar. It'd be nice if "what you seen on your timeline" was more of a client side concern and portable accross implementations instead of needing a custom mastodon-only endpoint.

Now some dependency's build system for typescript got busted and it doesn't have the transpiled JS available in the dist folder. And of course NPM decides it has to preemptively update all my dependencies when I try to install an unrelated new one. 🙃
Is this really worth it? Hours wasted dealing with build systems to catch bugs that would be caught by a linter and unit tests anyway?

@npub14aa…72lh That's the hope yeah. We're reducing the surface of the bits of AP that need to use a central server as much as possible. Right now the inbox is hosted in the cloud but it could just as easily run on your device and servers could acc3ess it over p2p if they support that or via http gateways.
Similar approach for the published AP data. Initially instances will load over https but we'll be adding specs to include p2p urls for all your data which some clients can load directly.

We've got a new #ActivityPub implementation that'll be released in early September in #DistributedPress!
Instead of fancy frontends and databases, we're focusing on enabling statically published sites to add AP support via a lightweight Social Inbox server that they can register using standard HTTP Signed Messages.

Anyone can make a train or phone line but only Apple can make iphones that talk to apple cloud services. Heads up to any #NodeJS and #JavaScript developers out there: If you aren't already you should be using the Node Version Manager utility since a lot of projects need either an older or newer version of node and you'll have a bad time if you only use the system installed version.

I think it's only just clicking for me that the death of the web is upon us. Instead of "googling" for stuff folks are searching on tiktok, instead of indexable forums there's closed discord communities. In fact apps and services are becoming locked within proprietary apps like discord. Paired with "ai" language models creating infinite web spam the whole thing is becoming less useful for the average person.

@npub1alm…t4v4 I self hist my matrix instance and use bridges with e2ee. I've found that organizing stuff into "spaces" has been essential to make sense of messages. E.g. i have a seperate space for messages from loved ones and meatspace friends and others for different projects I work on. It's been a huge boon for ptojects that use multiple apps for comms (discord/slack/etc at once)

Though TBH I feel way worse for folks that don't have the luxury of not needing to commute to work. Usually they have to commute even further for even shittier pay and shittier work conditions.
They should at least be offered significantly higher compensation. Pisses me off that folks can't afford to live close to where they work and that so many employers are comfortable with exploitation and destroying people's bodies and minds for short term profits.

Especially annoying when I'm loading via a chromium browser that certainly has whatever Google-pushed feature they want to use anyway.

Have I mentioned that I hate gmail? Their oauth login thing makes logging in with alternative clients a huge pain in the ass, and it's regular login requires a bunch of hoops to jump through and even then it barely works.
Really tired of this shit and that so many orgs require using it for "work email".
The calendar is also a pain.
People capitulating to megacorps ruining open protocols fills me with despair and is a recurring paint point.
