The problem is if they charge you 50 cents more for fries they won't be able to let go of that extra profit and release the funds back to the workers. They see profit and keep it. The only time they will give any of it to the workers is when they are forced to. As such, the only way workers can retain a living wage is through unionization and collective labour action. And the only way we can maintain our rights to job action and union activity, is by keeping union busters out of our government (which in Canada means no Conservatives).
There is more than enough profit going around for them to give a sliver of it to the people who make it. They don't need any more profit to treat workers fairly, they simply choose not to. You will never get any more of the pie by making more pie.

'President Donald Trump and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. put the nation at risk today and made us all far less safe by firing thousands of dedicated public health, medical and scientific staff across multiple agencies at HHS.
Trump and Kennedy fired career staff at agencies like the Agency for Children and Families and the Agency for Community Living (which provides nutritious, healthy “Meals on Wheels” to tens of millions of senior citizens). Those agencies were decimated, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
The Food and Drug Administration was hit especially hard. Trump and Kennedy fired staff with years of public health, scientific and medical expertise – career public servants who keep drugs safe and effective, who protect patients in clinical trials, and who fight every single day to safeguard us from potential pandemics like avian flu. The FDA staff who work on those were all fired.
“I'm overwhelmed with messages about the firings,” Biden’s former FDA Commissioner, Robert Califf, wrote on LinkedIn. “The FDA as we've known it is finished, with most of the leaders with institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of product development and safety no longer employed. He's just called his predecessor's pardons void and vacated. He gave a bitterly partisan speech at the Department of Justice, demanding the prosecution of the media and certain adversaries. Doctors in Gaza described scenes of “armageddon” as they struggled to tend to hundreds of dead and wounded, including children with severed limbs, as Israel launched some of its deadliest-ever strikes, shattering the relative calm of a ceasefire.
The ferocious bombardment came after Israel had imposed a two-week blockade on aid, supplies, and electricity, crippling the emergency responses. It pounded swathes of the strip early Tuesday morning, bringing an already struggling healthcare system to its knees.
Palestinian health officials said that in just a few hours alone, over 400 people had been killed, the vast majority women and children.

On Tuesday the Israeli government broke the ceasefire and began bombing Gaza once again. The attacks targeted a number of residential at killed at least 400 people, most of them children.
Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said that Al-Ahli Hospital had been overwhelmed with mass casualties and that entire families were arriving dead.
“Last night’s attacks prove again that there is no safe place across Gaza,” said Mahmoud. “People had gone back to bombed homes and evacuation centers, thinking it was going to be safe due to the ceasefire, but that was not the case. They were killed inside these very places.”

Dr Muhammad Abuafash, director of Palestinian Medical Relief, who rushed to treat those at al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City, said the few medics available struggled to decide who to treat first, as patients and bloodied bodies intermingled on the floor.
“The vast majority of the wounded are children. We’re talking about large numbers of children with severed limbs,” he said in desperation, adding that emergency workers were still pulling the wounded and the dead out from under the rubble.
“There are not enough medical facilities or supplies, nor are there enough medical personnel. The doctors deal with injuries without preference, unfortunately.”
Dr Tanya Haj-Hassan, a paediatric intensive care physician working with Medical Aid for Palestinians inside Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza, described being woken before dawn by an “airstrike frenzy.”
“The ER was just chaos, patients everywhere on the floor,” she said in a voice recording, adding that the paediatric intensive area unit beds were full and in the first couple of hours, more than 70 bodies were brought in and taken immediately to the morgue.
“There were probably three men, and the rest were all children, women, the elderly – it was everybody caught in their sleep, still wrapped in their blankets. Terrifying, a level of horror and evil that is hard to articulate. It felt like armageddon.”
Dr Mohammad Qishta, a Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) emergency doctor at Nasser Hospital, said the emergency department was “disastrous.”
“We received no less than 400 cases in less than two hours. We received many bodies and parts of bodies, most of them children and women,” he continued.

On Tuesday night, in the Qarara area east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, brothers Muhammad and Ibrahim Hamidi decided to take their children and flee to a less dangerous location east of the city. The sound of heavy gunfire from tanks stationed near their home after a brutal night of nonstop shelling and bombardment pushed them to head toward the Mawasi area of Khan Younis, the same coastal stretch of land that had served as a so-called “safe zone” throughout the war.
The brothers arrived and set up their tents. In the middle of the night, Muhammad heard the sound of bombing. He emerged from his tent, hundreds of meters away from his brother Ibrahim’s. He was rushing toward the sound of the bombs to help people who had been hit — a common sight in Gaza — but he didn’t expect that the bombed tent would belong to his brother.
“I ran out, thinking the bombing might have targeted a family we know. When I arrived, I found my brother lying on the ground, covered in blood, and his wife holding their child, both of them on fire,” Muhammad Hamidi told Mondoweiss. “My nephew was lying on the ground, injured in his head and back, and looking at his mother. She was engulfed in flames with his younger baby brother. Then my nephew turned his head toward his father, who was bleeding after the missile struck his head.”
With deep sadness, Muhammad says that in his final moments, his three-year-old nephew watched his mother and brother burn. “The child was helpless,” he said.

This is what happens to you in Trump's America, for countering Russian disinformation in countries that have no free press - you get "dismantled".
Even before this, Donald Trump tapped a right-wing former TV news anchor and Republican nominee, Kari Lake, to run Voice of America. Even before she arrived, the broadcaster began discouraging its journalists from saying or writing things that could be construed as critical of Mr. Trump — part of an attempt that its leaders hoped would help fend off attacks by the president.
However, under federal law the Voice of America’s director must be approved by a bipartisan board that oversees the Agency for Global Media, and the board has not voted on Ms. Lake’s nomination.
It would be easy to guess that Trump doesn't trust any bipartisan board would accept his extremely biased political appointments, so he's just dismantling the entire organization.

One thing I totally don't get about the anti-vaccination "logic"... so the measles vaccine is the old-fashioned kind which introduces a bit of weakened virus into the system so your body can identify it to build up a natural immunity.
So how can anti-vaxxers argue that you should just let yourself get sick with measles, suffer through the whole thing, then as long as you survive you will have immunity and be stronger for it?
That's exactly what the vaccine does, except safely, without the consequences.
You are introducing your body to the disease, to build a natural immunity. You can do it safely, or you can do it with great pain and suffering and even the potential of death. So yeah... uh, let's go with Option B to achieve the same result?
Is that really what's best for your children, and mine?

So anyways, on to the public health alert for Alberta and Edmonton specifically, even more specifically, people who were at the Stollery Children's Hospital's emergency department between March 14 at 10 p.m. and March 15 at 12:30 a.m. and anyone who was at the Belle Rive Medicentres Family Health Care Clinic in northeast Edmonton on March 12 between 2:15 p.m. and about 5:15 p.m.:
'Health officials say anyone who was exposed to a possible confirmed case may be at risk of getting sick and is strongly encouraged to review their vaccination records, AHS said.
Anyone who was potentially exposed and was born in or after 1970, and has less than two documented doses of vaccine, is at risk for developing measles and should monitor themselves for symptoms, AHS said.
Symptoms include a fever of 38.3° C or higher, a cough, runny nose and red eyes, and a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face.
People who are pregnant, young children and those with weakened immune systems are among those most at risk for complications from the disease which can include infections of the middle ear and the lung and swelling of the brain.
According to data from AHS, one to three out of every 1,000 measles cases is fatal. More than 90 per cent of people who are not immune and come into contact with the virus will become infected.
If symptoms develop, individuals are advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any health-care facility.
In Alberta, measles vaccine doses are offered, free of charge, through the province's immunization program. People exposed to the disease may also be eligible for vaccine or immune globulin to reduce the risk of developing measles.

Absolutely amazing news! After bargaining on Friday was held over into Saturday, a settlement was reached for Education Workers in the 3 bargaining units Edmonton Public, Fort McMurray Public, and Fort McMurray Catholic schools! Education workers in Fort McMurray have been on strike for 5 months, and in Edmonton for over 2 months, holding the picket lines in some of the worst freezing cold that Alberta has to offer!
CUPE president Rory Gil reflects my feelings for our education workers the best:
“I’m in awe of the workers in Edmonton and Fort McMurray who stood their ground, in weather as cold as minus 51 degrees, to win a fair contract,” said Gill. “Their fortitude, their determination, and their solidarity won the day.”
“Education support workers are critical to our school system, and today they finally won the respect they deserve,” said Gill.
Education workers in Edmonton are expected to return to work on Wednesday or Thursday, after the settlement is ratified by CUPE members on Monday or Tuesday. No details will be shared until the members have had a chance to see them, but I'm sure if the bargaining team is satiated then the members will be too!
This fight should never have been needed, as having enough respect for our most important educational workers, who support all of our children, to give them a living wage should never be in question.
Yet here we are, in a fight against Capitalist interests who see human beings as a worthless commodity, and the government who seeks to cut and slash public services to privatize them and hand them over to these same profiteering interests.
These job actions have not ended. Education workers in Calgary and Parkland county have more recently joined the strike lines and have not yet reached a settlement. Strikes and labour actions are striking up all across the country, as we have reached the point of end-stage capitalism and they have taken far too much from us for far too long. This profiteering and hoarding of wealth by the few is not sustainable for the many who are struggling and unable to live. This exploitation must come to an end, and it will not end without COLLECTIVE ACTION!

The mRNA technology behind coronavirus vaccines is now being used to create bespoke vaccines for cancer patients.
"Cancer vaccines weren’t a proper field of research before the pandemic. There was nothing. Apart from one exception, pretty much every clinical trial had failed. With the pandemic, however, we proved that mRNA vaccines were possible.
mRNA cancer vaccines work by giving the body instructions to make a harmless piece of a cancer-related protein. This trains the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells carrying that protein. Think of it like a training manual for security guards. The vaccine gives the immune system a guide on what cancer looks like, so it knows exactly who to watch for and remove.
Going from mRNA Covid vaccines to mRNA cancer vaccines is straightforward: same fridges, same protocol, same drug, just a different patient.
In the current trials, we do a biopsy of the patient, sequence the tissue, send it to the pharmaceutical company, and they design a personalized vaccine that’s bespoke to that patient’s cancer. That vaccine is not suitable for anyone else. It’s like science fiction.
The UK was ready. We had fridges and we had world-class manufacturing and research facilities. During the pandemic, we had proven we could open and deliver clinical trials fast. Also, the UK had established a genomic global lead with Genomics England and the 100,000 Genome Project. All doctors and nurses in this country are trained in genomics.
So the UK government signed two partnerships: one with BioNTech to provide 10,000 patients with access to personalized cancer treatments by 2030, and a 10-year investment with Moderna in an innovation and technology center with capacity to produce up to 250 million vaccines. The stars were aligned.
For many years, we believed that research is inherently slow. It used to take 20 years to get a drug to market. Most cancer patients, unfortunately, will succumb by the time a drug gets to market. We showed the world that it could be done in a year if you modernize your process, run parts of the process in parallel, and use digital tools.
We have a trial to stop skin cancer coming back after you cut it out. It’s now completed. We over-recruited again, just like every single one of the trials that we ran, and the trial finished one year ahead of schedule. That’s completely unheard of in cancer trials because they normally run over-long.
What will happen now is that, over the next six to 12 months, we will monitor the people in the trial and work out if there’s a difference between the people who took the cancer vaccine and the ones who didn’t. We’re hoping to have results by the end of the year or beginning of 2026. If it’s successful, we will have invented the first approved personalized mRNA vaccine, within only five years of the first licensed mRNA vaccine for Covid. That’s pretty impressive."

The Internet Archive at archive dot ph has been hacked! The dot "is" extension seems to be fine, just the dot ph extension was hacked. It redirected when I went to that address to a phishing scam with a loud blaring "VIRUS ALERT" siren which had others in my workplace coming to ask me what the beeping was. Of course I shut it down without touching anything, and even cleared any cookies from the site after. Until you've heard it's safe, don't use the internet archive using the dot ph extension. Especially in a public space, lol.
I did not click any links to get there, I only typed archive dot ph into my address bar.

This is what Israel calls a "ceasefire". Operation Iron Wall started 2 days after the ceasefire was declared. The only reason they "accepted" a ceasefire, and I use that term loosely since they never stopped the violence and killing, was because there was nothing left to destroy in Gaza and they had already committed to moving their efforts the West Bank.

'Qassas’s killing is part of a sweeping Israeli military assault, dubbed “Operation Iron Wall,” that has largely emptied four refugee camps in the northern West Bank—Jenin, Tulkarem, Faraa, and Nur Shams—forcing over 40,000 Palestinians to flee their homes in the largest forced displacement in the territory since the 1967 war. Israeli troops have bulldozed roads and destroyed homes, buildings, water and electricity lines, and other civilian infrastructure. On February 23, Israel’s Defense Minister said Israeli troops would remain in some of the refugee camps for the coming year and that displaced residents would not be allowed to return.
Israel launched Operation Iron Wall on January 21, two days after the Gaza “ceasefire” went into effect. More than 60 Palestinians, including 11 children, have been killed by Israeli forces and state-backed settlers in the West Bank since then. With the Gaza ceasefire deal in peril as a result of Netanyahu’s sabotage and Israel—even further emboldened by the re-election of Donald Trump—on an aggressive and violent rampage in the region, tens of thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank face one of the most dire realities imposed on them by Israel in decades.
For residents, this means a relentless escalation of daily terror and the brutal treatment of their dead.
Over the past two weeks, roads outside Jenin have been destroyed in an obliteration campaign, cafes and commercial infrastructure bulldozed, and the main streets rendered nearly impassable. While buildings inside the camp have been completely destroyed, civilian homes and buildings outside the camp have been converted into military positions, where Israeli soldiers stationed snipers and used them as shelters. The operation is now expanding beyond the refugee camp and penetrating toward the city, with the Israeli army declaring the entire district of Jenin a closed military zone.
“I want to be home,” the woman said. “I just want to be home. For the last year there has been no room to breathe. It has been one operation after the next.” She described the recent Israeli military attacks and those of the Palestinian Authority, conducted under the auspices of targeting armed resistance fighters in the West Bank. “Now this,” she said. “I can’t breathe, I want to breathe.”
“I can’t go and help them. They’ll shoot immediately at all of us because I’m a young man,” he said. With the camp ordered emptied, Israeli snipers stationed on the outskirts often shoot at will.
The snipers have also fired at journalists, medics tending to the chronically ill or injured, and the elderly who have tried to sneak in to gather some belongings.

Lech Walesa, the former Polish president and Solidarity trade union leader who played a leading role in the fall of Communism, signed a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump expressing "horror" at his argument with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The Nobel Peace Prize-winner posted the text of the letter, which was signed by 39 Polish former political prisoners, on Facebook on Monday.

Your Excellency Mr President,
We watched the report of your conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski with fear and distaste. We consider your expectations to show respect and gratitude for the material help provided by the United States fighting Russia to Ukraine insulting. Gratitude is due to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed their blood in defense of the values of the free world. They have been dying on the frontline for more than 11 years in the name of these values and independence of their Homeland, which was attacked by Putin's Russia.
We do not understand how the leader of a country that is the symbol of the free world cannot see it.
Our panic was also caused by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation reminded us of one we remember well from Security Service interrogations and from the debate rooms in Communist courts. Prosecutors and judges at the behest of the all-powerful communist political police also explained to us that they hold all the cards and we hold none. They demanded us to stop our business, arguing that thousands of innocent people suffer because of us. They deprived us of our freedoms and civil rights because we refused to cooperate with the government and our gratitude. We are shocked that Mr. President Volodymyr Zelenski treated in the same way.
The history of the 20th century shows that every time the United States wanted to keep its distance from democratic values and its European allies, it ended up being a threat to themselves. This was understood by President Woodrow Wilson, who decided to join the United States in World War I in 1917. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt understood this, deciding after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 that the war for the defense of America would be fought not only in the Pacific, but also in Europe, in alliance with the countries attacked by the Third Reich.
We remember that without President Ronald Reagan and American financial commitment it would not have been possible to bring the collapse of the Soviet Union empire. President Reagan was aware that millions of enslaved people were suffering in Soviet Russia and the countries it conquered, including thousands of political prisoners who paid for their sacrifice in defense of democratic values with freedom. His greatness was m. in. on the fact that he without hesitation called the USSR the "Empire of Evil" and gave it a decisive fight. We won, and the statue of President Ronald Reagan stands today in Warsaw vis a vis of the US embassy.
Mr. President, material aid - military and financial - cannot be equivalent to the blood shed in the name of independence and freedom of Ukraine, Europe, as well as the whole free world. Human life is priceless, its value cannot be measured with money. Gratitude is due to those who make the sacrifice of blood and freedom. It is obvious for us, the people of "Solidarity", former political prisoners of the communist regime serving Soviet Russia.
We are calling for the United States to withdraw from the guarantees it made with the Great Britain in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which recorded a direct obligation to defend the intact borders of Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons resources. These guarantees are unconditional: there is no word about treating such aid as an economic exchange.
