#DOOM on the #SegaSaturn is a strange beast. It has an interesting development story regarding John Carmack and his meddling, which has resulted in a... Muddy experience.
The game is the same as the PlayStation version, but there are fewer bells and whistles, most notably, lighting effects, and general visuals are a downgrade. If i said Doom on PlayStation was dark in places... OH BOY.
Movement feels slow, a little sluggish, making certain platforming moments a chore. A contrast from the Playstation's slippery movement.
There can be moments of slowdown as levels get more and more complex, not unplayable but noticeable and a little frustrating.
Much like the 3DO versions, enemies seem quite passive at times, and projectiles move slower than expected. But Doomguy is hyped on adrenaline, and his fire rate seems double the normal speed. The chainsaw in this version is a beast!

There are a number of things I am rubbish at. Advertising myself being a big one, I find myself in a weird spot of wanting to share stuff, but I don't want to come across as an attention seeker.
But my plan is to try and get out a toot once a month outlining my plans for my #YouTube channel. As well as trying to expand the content Web a little bit with my more general gaming videos and not just let's plays.

Took a hell of a lot of fenangling, a bit of swearing, and using a small amount of that common sense I hear people talk about.
But I got my USB #N64 controller, properly mapped on my #SteamDeck. These are exciting times as I can't wait to play some of the N64 games I have been dying to play and never beat.
I might have to make a short video demonstrating it properly at some point, but for now... Have a few pictures.
I decided to see if I could do the "leave forest early" glitch on Ocarina of Time. For those uninitiated with it, I plan to demonstrate some glitches in shorts at some point, so stayed tuned for those 😊

Recently, I have been pushing myself to play through games, I say push, for the most part, I enjoy it. But never have I wanted to drop a game faster than #DOOM2 on the #GBA. If I consider the first one to be a decent port, this one is pretty shockingly bad.
Sure, I am playing on Ultra Violence mode, the 'Gentleman's way to play Doom' (Thanks, CV11), but everything about this version is off. The controls are odd. The vertical aiming seems off. Enemy AI stop doing anything at a certain distance away, allowing you to snipe them. But the weirdest thing is the armour glitch.
For some reason, when you finish a stage, your armour % is correctly displayed but doesn't function. So I am starting a new stage with 200% armour that doesn't degrade or give me protection. Honestly, it is incredibly frustrating!
I am going to have to push through on determination alone on this one...

I feel some context needs to be provided to my previous toot.
Typically, in Doom, item collection % only refers to "artifact" items. These are items you can pick up regardless of your health and ammo status. So health, armour bonuses, backpacks, and certain power ups. Might be slightly wrong there, YouTuber Decino has a more detailed breakdown on this stuff (And other Doom mechanics).
Having 100% item collection involving ALL collectables would mean you'd have to strategically take damage to pick up med kits and stim packs and waste ammo to collect everything. Thankfully, 100% item collection achievements need to be done once per chapter (every 8 or so levels)

Being someone who grew up in the 90s on a healthy diet of Nintendo games, I have a strong nostalgia for the #N64
The console has numerous gems, and there is always something that stops me from playing most of them. The controller.
Well, actually, the controller itself isn't the problem. It is the modern controller mappings.
Typically, modern controllers will map the C buttons to the right analogue stick. This does work... But it can be difficult to accurately utilise. What you might think is C-Up as you tilt the stick up. Registers as C-Right because you were a little too diagonal for the controllers liking.
Well, this will be an issue of the past! He says and hopes.
Being an adult with some disposable money can be a good thing at time!
I am looking forward to this controller arriving on Saturday and will provide feedback when I give it a test run.

One thing that took me by surprise when playing #DOOM on #PS1 was the change in sounds. The sound fx in this version are the same used in Doom 64, I think.
We have fancy skyboxes and lighting effects, which can turn certain areas into an absolute nightmare when the lights are strobing wildly. The game also feels darker in general, the secret level The Marshes is obnoxiously dark for an outdoor arena.
The Cyberdemon makes an appearance! Haven't seen you since the SNES. But the Spider Mastermind doesn't appear until Doom 2, strange, any Doom veteran knows the Mastermind is the lesser of the boss demons.
Thy Flesh Consumed is a little easier in places with a lot of the Barons being replaced by Hell Knights, 2-3 rockets vs 5? That's quite a courtesy.
The controls are pretty much perfect, though at times it feels a little slippery, it makes certain "platforming" challenges a little harder than they need to be.
All in all, a damn solid port!

So in lieu of not yet finishing #DOOM on the Atari. I did beat Ultimate Doom on the #PS1. When I say Ultimate Doom, yes, this includes Episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed. Romero, be praised. We get to play Perfect Hatred!
For the most part, I have been here before. The level layouts are the same as the majority of other console ports, but with fancy new lighting! We do have some curious additions. Monsters from Doom 2 are added into the map in strange locations! On Ultra Violence, there is now a Pain Elemental in E1M1 in one of the secret areas. There is also the Nightmare Spectre. Colour inverted Spectres who do more damage and take a beating to put down. Even a super shotgun blast doesn't reliably put them down...
There is a lot to unpack with this version, so much so I will need to do a follow-up toot!
And I am only halfway through! Doom on PS1 includes Doom 2! This gives us nearly 60 levels of Demon slaying goodness!

#DOOM on the #AtariJaguar elludes me at the moment. It's rather frustrating, I must admit. It would seem that no matter what I try running it through, there is an issue.
RetroArch's Jaguar Core has major graphical issues and runs slowly than comatose wild cat. On the flipside, you have Bizhawk, which wants to get down to the business, and it seems to be running way too fast! Even outside of Nightmare mode, you need to have catlike reflexes to avoid projectiles.
Incidentally, a thing I did learn, most Doom console ports uses the same level set as the Atari version (assuming this was the first to use this set). Slough of Despair is missing, E2M8 is not the Cyberdemon fight. Even the Saturn and PS1 versions use this level set. Though the Saturn and PS1 versions do mix things up a little bit more with E3M8 being the Cyberdemon fight and having some of the levels from Thy Flesh Consumed.
I will see if I can get my way through Atari Jaguar Doom, but it definitely isn't playing fairly.

Took longer to get working, but I knocked out #DOOM on the #3DOInteractiveMultiplayer , a notorious port that has a really fascinating backstory to it all. Rebecca Heineman did a fantastic job, all things considered.
Compared to all other versions of Doom I have beaten in the last week, this one actually has Spectres! Joy! It makes up for the lack of Cyberdemon and Spidermastermind! (Not...)
The soundtrack to this game is bumping, though. Honestly, some great arrangements in this version. But what sacrifices must we make? Well. The game has a resolution slider to change the resolution. But anything more than screen for ants is borderline unplayable on Ultra Violence.
The enemy AI is BIZARRE as well, outside of Nightmare they are very passive, unless they are within snorting distance of you. It makes shotguns super deadly, but they are easy to keep out of blasting distance, for the most part.

#Doom on #GBA was the first proper time I played Doom seriously, and it wasn't really ideal on the old non-backlit GBA screen, but I grew up playing classic GB by lamp light.
The game has some interesting censorship going on. Green blood. ULTRA VIOLENCE is no longer a difficulty, Nightmare was basically classic UV. Some satanic references were dropped. Stuff you'd probably expect, based off Nintendo's public image.
Some levels are simplified, and graciously E3M2 Slough of Despair is omitted from the game. Though the GBA port functions allows you to carry over all your weapons between episodes, nice.
The controls are pretty decent, shoulder buttons function as dedicated directional strafe, but holding both down and pressing up and down to cycle weapons? That's rough. Especially in a heated combat.
Honestly, as far as a port goes and the fact it is portable? Damn, I love GBA Doom, so much so I mastered it on #RetroAchievements

#Doom on #Sega32X is a weird experience, especially when played with a standard 3 button Sega Controller. I mean, there is a start button as well, so I guess it is 4 buttons.
Despite being only episodes 1 and 2, it is a pretty solid way to play classic Doom, there is good enough visual clarity that you don't feel your retinas burning as a glob of pixels approaches you, like on the SNES.
A few levels are tweaked and simplified, but the core experience up until E2M8 is mostly there.
The gameplay feels right. The weapons work mostly as expected, the auto-aiming when things are at a different height level to you can feel a little off. Though I only really noticed that in E1M9.
Honestly, the only way that this version could be better, in my opinion, is with dedicated strafe buttons. But I don't think that would be possible, even with the 6 button Sega Controller. Of this console generation, it's definitely my preferred way to experience a Doom port so far!

This has honestly been one of my favourite purchases for this year. It definitely hits a lot of buttons for me, and it was somewhat bird themed! How could I say no!

A thought occurred to me, there are a number of ports of classic #DOOM and I have beaten the SNES version, maybe I need to have a look at the other ones out there. Like the Sega 32x, the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar...
It does sound quite a lot like suffering, but a long time ago I did beat #ThePlutoniaExperiment on Ultra Violence, so Doom masochism is in my blood.
Looks like I am going to be ripping and tearing for a little while.

Well, that was one 'hell' of a ride. Today I managed to finally finish playing through #DOOM on the #SNES
This was the first version of DOOM I ever played and... Well... It is impressive, I will give them that. They only omitted a handful of levels, I think 4 in total, but the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind fights are intact!
The game is quite wonky to be honest, movement feels bad, you can't circle strafe, the Shotgun is more like single shot rifle and the way enemies move and react is really strange. They don't react to sound, so it does mean that enemies won't come rushing around corners if they hear you kill their friends... But they will approach in a very clumsy fashion. Either slowly or super fast, OMG they are right on you.
Their pain chances also seem higher, stun locking with the chaingun is a pretty viable approach.
Apparently not the worst version of Classic Doom out there. Colour me intrigued.

Right, Disney. Mickey Mouse. Why were games around your mascot so frustratingly difficult in the 90s? This isn't just a #CastleOfIllusion thing. We had Magical Quest, #MickeyMania , I mean World of Illusion wasn't too difficult from memory... But still! That's a lot of Retro Gaming trauma you dumped on us in that generation!
Castle of Illusion is meaner than it has any right to be. Behind that cute facade is a game that is just a little cruel. From enemy placements and patterns to slightly squiffy hit boxes. Also, you need to hold down the D-pad to prepare Mickey's butt to jump on and defeat enemies. That's a weird nuance and very much a choice that is seldom implemented into a 2D platformer.
Is the game good? It's pretty decent, and offers a challenge, but I have beaten it now and I don't see myself rushing back do that all over again!

Let's talk #RobocopVsTerminator for a moment.
It's definitely a game I shouldn't have been playing at a young age. As it is violent, the death animations on the human enemies are impressive. If a little excessive.
Is it as hard as I remember? Probably not! But it can be unfair! Whilst the game was generous with the extra lives, dying carried a potentially run ending penalty, as you can lose the weapon you are currently using and it reverts back to the pistol which, against bosses, is next to useless.
I have a hastily taken photo of a situation I was in against the final boss, where all I had was the pistol in either weapon slot. This turned that fight into an hour long slog where I was farming lives at a fast pace.
Definitely a fun little game that is worth a play, but be prepared for a fair amount of nonsense after the first few levels!

So, I have had a glorious moment of vindication for myself. Not only have I beaten #Alien3 on the #SNES, but I also got all the achievements for the game from Retroachievements.org, so the game is considered Mastered!
Honestly, the game was a really good challenge, I will definitely need to talk a little about this game on my channel, as there is a lot to talk about, and it certainly deserves a proper review in my opinion.
Despite being a movie tie-in game and a bit of a frustrating slog at times, it was actually really enjoyable and I can't put into words how happy I am with beating this game from my childhood!

So, on my quest to slay the demons of my gaming past, I am not slaying demons, but #Xenomorphs in the #SNES version of #Alien3
Let me be honest, this game is brutal, and I am amazed I beat the first stage of this game when I was younger as it is... Challenging to say the least. It was so traumatic that the password for level 2 is seared into my mind. The password being QUESTION.
So, clearing a stage requires you to beat several missions on that level, and the missions require you to navigate the maze-like map going to multiple locations, saving prisoners, torching eggs, and repairing things. All the while xenomorphs constantly spawn around you to be a nuisance!
So far I have beaten the first two stages and each stage has taken well over an hour each. This feels like this will be a slog! I am so glad #RetroAchievements is logging my progress on this one!

One of the nicest things about having a #SteamDeck is it can be used as a reliable, portable emulation box.
I have a lot of unfinished gaming business from my childhood, and the Steam Deck has been the perfect tool to help me finish that.
One such game is #Driver1 on the #PS1, a game with one of the hardest barriers to entry to even begin the story. Once you know how to do the Car Park mission, it isn't any easier as the time limit is incredibly tight on it!
Most of the game is... Uneventful, missions aren't as challenging as that Car Park. THEN you hit the roadblock that is 'The President's Run' if you know, you know. It is a brutal stage where the only real strategy is 'get lucky, son'
I am just glad that a feature on Retroachievements.org is that it registers when you have cleared a game. I have no intentions of mastering it though 😂
