Stats question... x and y are random variables with equal measurement error. I can compute the leading PC as orthogonal regression. The variance explained by this PC is 0.91. However, the R^2 between the two variables is 0.64. What's the interpretation of these two numbers in this context?

I've been thinking about that Sabine Hossenfelder video* that is doing the rounds and I have to say that I mostly don't like it. It raises real issues with how the incentives are laid out in science, yes, but the whole framing is (sometimes explicitly) that that is all academia is and there's nothing of value. Besides, these are not new issues and a lot of people have been talking about these points in a much more productive way.

I also don't really like them that much, because they tend to lead to accidental actions as I start writing without realising that another window had focus or one of my cats sits on the keyboard.
