sign that a piece of audio software is designed for amateurs: the volume sliders go from 0 to 100.
red flag that it was designed *by* amateurs: when the volume set to 50%, the audio amplitude is 50% and setting low volumes is difficult, because they failed to use a logarithmic scale for the slider.

it's always mildly infuriating to watch computer programmers misunderstand how PC audio works because they have never looked at a block diagram of the internals of a sound card, nor have they ever used any professional audio software or equipment to give them an idea of what a good audio workflow looks like. audio code is a bit of a specialist subfield and i'm tempted to say it's best left to the experts, because shitty audio software is far too common.

professional software development is pretty ew these days. when i left the business in 2020 i was just having mental issues and a burnout but looking at what the industry has turned into, it's not something i want to participate in. if i could just write nice small programs and sell them, i'd do that, but no one's doing that anymore, and most problems imaginable have already been solved by someone else, so now we're just making up shit no one needs.

@npub1t6q…htd2 desktop Linux is... not great. i mean, it's okay for everyday stuff, but it often acts up when you try specific things with it.
random weirdness i encountered the other day: KDE failed to detect a thumb drive. the kernel log said it was detected but something broke so i had to restart to fix it.
another thing i was trying to do the other day was trying to reformat a memory card. apparently, KDE doesn't have a GUI for this, so i had to install a tool, and it was hard to use.

this isn't very helpful. no waveform preview on the WAV file so i can't sync. also, why the emojis? this looks like it was designed for casual users. KDEnlive has a more professional interface. but this is much faster. i want KDEnlive's interface with the engine that OpenShot uses.

the limit for "this isn't as good as it could be" was kind of already exceeded for me when the Linux desktop environments i have tried so far failed to simply default to 200% scaling initially when they saw that a 3840x2160 monitor was plugged in, and it just got worse after that.
now i have this one GTK app (alsa-scarlett-gui) that looks gigantic because it scales twice as much as it needs to. meanwhile, GIMP (which is also a GTK app) has normal menus but tiny icons and controls.

being a hacker in the 80s or 90s must've been fun.
IT security was barely on people's minds. i remember doing a bit of mischief myself as a teenager in the 90s.
network stacks were so vulnerable you could often make them crash with a malicious packet. nobody used strong passwords. you could use a modem to dial random numbers to look for exposed modems connected to industrial equipment for remote control. if passwords were encrypted at all, the encryption was weak and nobody used salting.
i didn't know about all of these vulnerabilities at the time, but enthusiastic hackers probably did.

what they discovered is that factory workers were keen to participate in top-level meetings at first, but they started getting bored with them, and eventually, only a small group would show up for the meetings.
those people became the management.
basically, a company structure emerged organically, despite best efforts to eliminate the hierarchy.

so i implemented this state variable filter for my synth code:

same topography as in Prophet and the Oberheim.
not the easiest thing to turn into a fourth-order (24 dB/oct) filter. normally you just chain two second-order (12 dB/oct) filters, but this is a multi-output filter, so if you did it naively, you'd end up throwing another whole filter on each output.
for the moment, my code just switches modes, i.e. the 24 dB/oct filter doesn't have multiple outputs, just multiple modes.
it sounds all right though.

Seagate seems to label at least some SMR drives as "Archive HDD" but far from all of them.
you literally can't tell if you've got an SMR drive without checking datasheets or drive benchmarking websites. it's never advertised anywhere.

#[0] #[1] the intended use for this drive is to be a part of a pair of off-site backup drives that i shuttle back and forth between where my home server is and another location, so it's fine if they're SMR. the main drive pair in my array is CMR and runs ZFS with daily snapshots, so this is just in case that fails catastrophically.

the speed at which fsck is checking this disk is 1% per hour. it can only manage 40 MB/s for uncached write-read cycles on individual sectors, which is about 3X slower than what it manages with normal sequential I/O. a disk check that takes 4 days is crazy.

it's somewhat ironic that virtual memory essentially *eliminates* the need for relocatable executables.
on paper, we could just go back to .COM files for Windows programs, because you'd just place every program at the same address in their own virtual memory space, and you'd only need address relocation for libraries.
on paper you could do the same for libraries if you just had a memory space per library, but this would be pretty slow and in many ways impractical.

the schematic for the audio output of the Raspberry Pi is hilarious, because it's just a PWM driving a buffer amp and a passive lowpass filter.
it works, but this is *not* high quality digital audio.
it must have been cheaper to do this than to just put a codec IC there like a normal engineer would do.

anyway, i may have just increased the visibility of Fediverse content on Nostr a bit.
my little indexing crawler talks to the mostr.pub ActivityPub/Nostr bridge, and it rebroadcasts stuff from there to other relays while it's indexing what's on them.
not sure how effective it is, but my relay checker at https://nrcheck.tigerville.no does seem to indicate that everything i post on Mastodon is now on way more relays than it was before.
