I suspect most of that drop is because people died or indebted themselves to pay for the treatment. I know of three and my circle of contact is very small.

More proof of how essential is a strong Green Party presence in UK politics. Green Party peers Natalie Benn and Jenny Jones with Labour support acted to stop the government removing regulations on house building which would permit increasing pollution of watercourses. We need proportional representation so badly. Recent poll shows that 19% would vote Green if votes counted.

I am interested in the scope for small scale enclosed composting which is possible on a boat — space equivalent to a small window balcony. If it could dispose of human waste, even better! (Lots of boaters prefer a separating loo, but disposing of the semi-dried solids is an issue.) Any thoughts? I’ve looked at ‘hot composting’ but even the smallest unit is too big, a wormery looks more feasible in size but I’ve no experience 🤷🏼‍♀️

You’ve done as much as you can. I suppose the rain will help keep any dust close and they’re not breaking it up, yet.
A lot of people’s attitude to that type of asbestos is very dismissive. The hoops we go through for ‘safe disposal’: PPE, double wrapping, sealing, the lot; and then I’ve seen two guys in a skip with no PPE knife the polythene off and smash up the panels with a sledge hammer 😱😳🤷🏼‍♀️. Can’t help those who prefer their blissful superior ignorance.

And an assumption in those same managers, screwing the bottom line, that equipment, tech and people carry on being as productive forever. It doesn’t; it wastes lots of time with breakdowns and worker ill health or injuries. Priority to pay shareholders instead of investing in production, including training and paying workers properly, is surely a main factor?

Just had exactly that convo with a GP who spends their day gaming the system to find any way of getting their patients the tests or treatments needed. Such a waste of time and effort.

Exactly so, an under-resourced service is so much less efficient in many ways, from lacking purchasing power for economy of scale to tasks becoming more complex and costly when delayed. Loss of expertise means tasks take longer or are done poorly or redone. Overloading staff, machines, buildings and systems so they break and increase the delays and backlogs. Staff leaving in despair wastes resources recruiting and training. Austerity creates inefficiency.

Having worked in various public sector services for years, I find there are no ‘efficiency savings’; there are only cuts, which reduce and then wreck public services. When you cut too far, the service cannot function. We passed that point years ago, which is why every service is now unable to fulfil its statutory duty, yet has continued to deliver what it can due only to massive goodwill of staff, now exhausted, and their huge unsustainable effort. What a cost to their lives.

According to the two I know: further enraged (which they didn’t think possible) and spending the summer re-training so as to quit. They’re exhausted, sick of being so under-valued, expected to teach such a poor syllabus, and wage increases taken from resources so they have even less to offer pupils in crumbling schools with broken equipment which make everything so much harder to deliver.

It’s so screamingly obvious that more of the same simply increasss the problem. In the Bank’s case I assume that what they want is to keep stoking inflation.

The conversation became very dark very quickly because the concept of priority to the well-being of the workforce was fast to the fore.

Seeing Labour scrap yet another pledge (do they have any left?) makes me wonder if they are deliberately reducing their voter support because, if they won an election, this government’s scorched-earth wrecking-ball policies provide an impossible task to reverse in a term, so they are hoping to cede the poisoned chalice to a lib-dem-green alliance, then sit back and smirk.
