Not only that, starting from the OS to social media apps, reliance on closed source software does not make sense anymore. The FOSS solutions are not mere alternatives, practically, tool for tool they offer far better choices, and most importantly, you can tweak them to how you like. It’s not by chance that proprietary software houses such as MS are now embracing (and planning to extend and extinguish) free and open source tools.

This is an amazing epiphany, I’d love to see this vision realised. But the hard reality is that in general awareness of even the term #Fediverse across university campuses is abysmally low, let alone realise its potential. Interesting paper. While they justifiably promote OER and OEP, all their discussions and resources are around Google docs and twitter and TikTok and Instagram with passing mention of “Mastodon”, as if open source educational tools and media do not exist. If I have a chance tomorrow, I’d like to ask them about these omissions.

Had an interesting experience today.
Daughter’s Macbook Air had a problem with the battery and it needs replacement. Took it to a local computer store for battery replacement. The shop floor service people informed me that they had the battery in stock and it’d take them 2-3 days to replace the battery and I’d have to leave the laptop for 2-3 days with them and quoted a price of about 200 NZD. I asked them if it were possible for them to do that over the weekend or if I were to bring the laptop and waited, if they would be able to replace the battery the same day.
They said they would do that if I paid an “urgency fee” of 80 NZD (this looks like a policy of the shop rather than the technicians were quoting whatever they wanted).
What is a fair price to pay, even for urgency? Or is there none?

I see what you mean. I did not mean “endlessly tweaking your config” for Vim/Neovim in any bad sense, at least for me, I keep myself fiddling with the config (just can’t help). OTOH, I did not have to do much with helix editor in this case, hence the comment. if it makes sense, 🙂

Interesting. I posted about moving to #Neovim from Vscode this weekend, ended up discovering #HelixEditor (https://www.helix-editor.com). This modal editor is seriously good. It takes a while to get your head around if you are coming from (neo)vim, but in the end saves you from that “yak shaving” of endlessly tweaking your config, ;-) (You may still have to tweak config.toml if you use MacBook with no support for true colours, e.g., iTerm2 for terminal but that’s a different story.
