Basically, the PM/DM mechanism is a "missing stair" of usability design. It's possible for experts - experienced users - to avoid being tripped up by it, because they've already made their mistakes or have been warned. But that doesn't help newer, less sophisticated, or less experienced users.
It's almost like hazing.

Periodic reminder that the Mastodon "Private Mention" mechanism is a dumpster fire of dangerously insecure and counterintuitive design. Among other things, it copies your message to anyone *mentioned in the body*, not merely listed at the start, as you might expect.
You also can't fully turn it off (there's just a setting that merely silently ignores all incoming messages, with no failure indication to the sender).

The thing loos like a large brown lunchbox. But open it up, and you reveal something at home in any retro mad scientist’s arsenal. The lid becomes a calibrated loop antenna, with a surprisingly large array of dials and switches that you have to adjust to tune a signal and make accurate measurements. Radio nerditry:
Easily the best AM (medium wave) radio I have ever used, in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and raw funness of use, is the Potomac Instruments FIM-41. Made from the 1970’s to around 2010, it’s actually a “field strength meter” designed for making compliance measurements of broadcast antenna patterns. Shockingly expensive new, they were sold mostly to broadcast stations and FCC enforcement offices.
It’s a box of pure analog/mechanical joy, with all the dials and switches.

I was recently at an interdisciplinary meeting (heavily skewed toward, but not exclusively, social science academics) in which easily 85% of the people there said they were working on AI or something related.
The current AI/LLM/AGI/whatever mania seems to have metastasized even more broadly than blockchain did. There are interesting and important problems there, but it seems to have become an intellectual black hole across the academy.

Mooonrise is probably the most recognizable Ansel Adams photo; it was certainly the most famous during his lifetime. What I think is notable about it is that while it's technically a "landscape" photo (in this case of the American West), it's dominated by the dark sky. The stark landscape serves in a supporting role, as a foil to the clouds and the moon.

This is an infrared photo, captured with a 1000nm filter with the Phase One Achromatic back. 1000nm is a fairly long IR wavelength, which renders a soft, surreal look. (IR photos are typically captured around 750-800nm). I used the Rodenstock 50mm Digaron, which leaves the moon small in the frame but still recognizable.
This is (obviously) a nod to Ansel Adams' Moonrise, Hernandez, NM. But Adams' 1941 photo was made just after sunset, in the visible spectrum. https://www.moma.org/collection/works/53904

There are other cold war-era networks like this around the capital region. One that may or may not be related is the network of a handful of AT&T "project offices", which are large bunkers (with helipads) on mountaintops from northern Maryland down to North Carolina. These (very secure) facilities, some of which remain active, were equipped with large "troposcatter" UHF communications antennas, suited for regional communication without the need for terrestrial relays or satellites.

Some, but not all, of these towers, including CARTWHEEL, were staffed full time by Army technicians from the White House Communications Agency. housed in underground bunkers below the towers.
They went to impressive lengths to keep the network secret (staff wore civilian work clothes and often drove water trucks to reach the facilities). This was partly because some of the endpoints, such as the Raven Rock bunker, were themselves secret.

CARTWHEEL and its cousins were decommissioned around 1990's. Many of the towers, mostly atop mountains in remote areas, were left to rot. CARTWHEEL and CORKSCREW (in central Maryland) have been repurposed for use by the FAA.
This was captured with the Rodenstock 23mm/5.6 Digaron lens and the Phase One IQ4-150 back. A polarizer was used to enhance sky contrast.

This unassuming conical tower, at first glance an agricultural silo or water tower, was actually part of a secret "continuity of government" communications network. Built in the early 1960's, CARTWHEEL and a number of similar towers strategically located around the mid-Atlantic region linked the White House with remote sites such as Camp David, Raven Rock, and Mount Weather.
The white section of the tower is a plexiglass radome, concealing various microwave antennas.

This was taken on a "top to bottom" tour of the Titan Missile site 571-7, now a museum. The Titan II missiles carried a 9 megaton "physics package", which they assured me had been removed, but I still wouldn't mess with them.
This was handheld with a DSLR and a Zeiss 21mm Distagon lens at ISO 3200. There was no room to maneuver with a tripod.

It's comparable to what you might earn over a lifetime with a well paying job and some investment income. And let's do some quick, very approximate arithmetic. Let's assume Rudy is made of money and has $148 million in his checking account. Split two ways, that's $74M each. Very likely the lawyers had a contingency arrangement, probably for 30%-50% of the collected judgement. Now we're down to $37M. One of the less obvious things about making an image like this is deciding where the focus should be and how much DoF is wanted. Here, I shot at f/8 and focused on the nearby train (using the rail as a guide). That made the building in the background slightly soft (which it would be due to the blur anyway). If I had it to do over, I'd probably use a view camera, tilt the focal plane to align with the track and use a wider aperture for more of a contrast between the tracks and background.

A lot of the technical literature on election security is gloomy, focusing on vulnerabilities and weaknesses. But all is not as bad as you might think! There's actually been enormous progress in both the theory and practice of election security in the last decade. @npub18xd…ruae Online systems are compromised all the time. Online bank fraud and tax fraud, and identity theft that enables them, are common problems. The difference is that, because neither banking nor tax payments are anonymous, it's generally possible to either insure or roll back fraudulent transactions.
One a vote is cast, on the other hand, it can't be traced back to the voter and corrected later if irregularities occurred. A compromise of an online voting system could cause irreversible harm.

The Aeropress (+ folding kettle and grinder) is an especially useful travel accessory in LV strip hotels, where getting decent coffee in the morning invariably involves a stupidly long walk, then standing in a stupidly long line, and then paying stupidly much money.

Packing for Hacker Summer Camp next week. 2 checked suitcases with 120lbs of electronics, with clothes serving as padding. Also an Aeropress.
