On the one hand, you don’t want people who are doing a bad job to stick around. On the other, you don’t want to replace competent people with incompetent ones.
These are not entry-level positions. You need decades of experience to gain the knowledge and expertise for the job. That’s why the Constitution has a minimum age for POTUS but not a maximum.
Populists don’t believe in competence. I mean, they believe it exists, but don’t think it’s important. They care much more about ideological purity.
Anyone who’s experienced is written off as “a corrupt elitist insider who’s part of the establishment and dedicated to preserving the status quo at all costs”.
The irony is that, when their own candidates win, they have to fight to maintain their “pure outsider” status and not be written off.
(There’s a recent NYT puff piece on AOC which is all about her insisting that she’s still an outsider.)

Yes, that’s my point. It’s inaccurate and unfair (and politically self-defeating) to equate an illness with age.
Plenty of young people get TBI’s and plenty of old people have brains that are functioning well. It’s fine to say that people who are too sick to serve should step down, but trying to rush our most experienced people off the job is dumb.
Moreover, by characterizing this as an age issue, it hurts Biden somehow. Meanwhile, Trump is only 3 years younger but in terrible health. And Sanders is a year older and in poor health.
But the last two don’t matter, because one of the key attributes of a populist personality cult is that the mindless followers are willing to overlook Dear Leader’s flaws. Hitler didn’t have blond hair or blue eyes, after all.
Meanwhile, the socialist populists are systemically ageist. “Eat the rich” means “eat the old”.

In a recent thread, I ran into a socialist populist who self-identified as a “feminist” but was more partisan than equalitarian.
They were pushing the ageist narrative in which the evil Boomers are blamed for all that is bad in the world, justifying calls for their speedy demise so that the young can inherit all that wealth and power.
Rather than admitting to greed, they claimed that “everything” is worse for Millennials and Gen Y. Everything?
Some of us remember history, so we know about the huge advances in civil rights that those Boomers and Silents created. We remember how the “good” old days were only good for straight white Christian men.
But these facts were an inconvenient distraction from the narrative of intergenerational economic cannibalism. You can’t eat the old if they aren’t demonized first.
Why do I mention this? Because blatant ageism of this sort is a hallmark of the populist left. It fits in perfectly with populism’s disdain for expertise and experience (both of which take time and are therefore unavailable to the young) and their fetish with authenticity (which favors those with less personal history to hide).

If canceling a major meant firing all of the people teaching it, then maybe. But it definitely means losing all the students who want a degree in that major. So unless a major is inherently unprofitable, there’s nothing to be gained in removing it.
And I did say maybe, not yes. There’s overlap in what instructors are qualified to teach, so even removing the major doesn’t necessarily mean you can reduce staff.
Let’s be blunt: this is political. The goal is to get rid of fields of study that are inconvenient to fascists.

It’s a very safe bet that someone who denies a horrific historical event, or denies that it’s horrific, is not neutral about it.
Whether it’s slavery, the Holocaust, or various other invasions and genocides, the person denying it happened INVARIABLY wants it to happen again.
There’s a corollary to this when it comes to extremism. When someone denies that extremism is extreme, this is always because they are themselves extremists.
For example, I had a ridiculous exchange with @npub1e3l…43lg, in which they kept insisting that the American far left isn’t “really” far left. From this, we can safely conclude that they are themselves far left.
I’ve had similar experiences, on X-Twitter, with fascists who insisted that Trump’s no fascist. Same thing.
One more corollary is that people who define and identify themselves as opposing one thing also support its opposite.
This is a bit subtle, though. I’m anti-fascist, but I’m not pro-communist. Then again, I don’t define and identify myself as anti-fascist, although of course I am. There’s plenty of room between being a fascist and a communist, and that’s where I am.
A counter-counter-examples are anti-capitalists, who are necessarily pro-communist. After all, if they’re opposed to capitalism, what else is left? There is no middle here.

Pretty sure I never said anything like that. In fact, I said the opposite.
Calling any group bigoted, except when that group is defined by its bigotry, is bigoted. So saying “Germans are bigoted” is wrong, while “Nazis are bigoted” is correct.
It’s also ok to stick to hard numbers, such as saying that the majority of white voters in America support white supremacy, since this isn’t a generalization, just measured statistics.
LGBT are not defined by bigotry, except in the sense of being a frequent target of it.
Walmart, incidentally, has a track record of systemic bigotry.

Reacting to someone who outs themselves as a bigot isn’t bigotry. Treating them as bigots in advance, just because of their identity, is bigotry.
Consider this parallel: “I don’t hate all Jews, but I assume they’re evil until proven otherwise.”
Sounds pretty fucking racist, no? And it’s not any less bigoted when applied to other groups.
The majority of Americans are Christian. A minority of Christians are bigots. Do the math.

Good people use the Bible to justify their goodness. Bad people use it to justify their badness. It’s a Rorschach blob: people see in it what they want to see.
Your cousin was wrong: it’s not bigotry to oppose bigots. But it is bigotry to oppose Christians who are not bigots, unfairly blaming them for those who are.
Let me put it this way: It’s good to hate Nazis, but bad to hate all Germans. It’s good to hate white supremacists, but bad to hate all whites. It’s good to hate Christofascists, but bad to hate all Christians.
It’s good to hate bigots, but it’s bigotry to hate those who merely share irrelevant attributes, such as nationality or race or religion, with bigots.
In the fight against bigotry, we must not ourselves become bigots. We have to narrow our focus to the guilty, not just those who resemble them on the surface.

Like I said, plenty of bad people are Christian, and many of them hide behind their religion. “Oh, I’m not bigoted, but God is so I guess I have to be.”
Consider that over 90% of Black Protestants voted for Biden. Are they are evil, too? In contrast, white Christians broke hard for Trump, but so did whites on the whole.
Blaming Christianity for bigotry is bigotry, just as sure as blaming whiteness.

There are good people who are Christians and there are bad people who are Christians.
Both of these are real Christians, so Christianity does not make someone good or bad.
