If canceling a major meant firing all of the people teaching it, then maybe. But it definitely means losing all the students who want a degree in that major. So unless a major is inherently unprofitable, there’s nothing to be gained in removing it.

And I did say maybe, not yes. There’s overlap in what instructors are qualified to teach, so even removing the major doesn’t necessarily mean you can reduce staff.

Let’s be blunt: this is political. The goal is to get rid of fields of study that are inconvenient to fascists.
