the issue isn't the technical limitations being unclear; everyone has understood that aspect. the issue is that there's an unwillingness to work on some compromise instead of just performing this basic analysis and then rejecting the idea wholesale without thinking of any workarounds
for example, Google Play Services already requires multiple OS packages to operate. you install the base OS (GPLv2) and then install the proprietary Google Apps on top before the initial boot. it doesn't seem unreasonable to have a third GPLv3 package containing TTS or other useful software that can't be included in the base image for licencing or security reasons
like, this sort of stubbornness is endemic to FOSS, and while I understand that work doesn't magically get done without actual time and resources being put in, you shouldn't be completely rejecting important work just because of a few key issues that you refuse to find compromises for. you dug yourself into the GPLv2 hole but you don't need to make it your grave

it still frustrates me to no end that the only reason why residential networking is complicated is IPv4
and IPv6 is almost three decades old
instead of all this bullshit with port forwarding, NAT punching, and other shit, you should be able to just know your own public IP address and send it to someone else to connect directly to you, but you can't on IPv4. instead you have to deal with bullshit

@nprofile…6h3y I'm still honestly sceptical even Google would use the tag. historically, they've leaned off using advisory tags since they often lie, plus it's not like they're not going to index a page if it's tagged as a different language
maybe the idea is to tag the links for different-language versions of a page, but that feels risky and I thought there were other metadata tags better suited to label direct translations

I kinda hate how many devices are using the term "hall effect" now because it is literally just
hey, you know how we've been mostly using the electro part of electromagnetism? well we added magnets now and it's better. you're welcome.
the fact that it's advertised as "hall effect" instead of like, contactless, which is the main benefit, is mostly because folks want to sound more scientific than they actually are
like you can do things at a distance because that's how magnets work (it's how electronics work too, but, shhh), and now you don't need to directly rub parts together since a changing point of contact is really more of a liability than a benefit at low voltage, since it can get dirty and stop working effectively
like sure, the hall effect was a major discovery, but it's kind of a downside that it has an actual effect named after a person instead of just being called what it actually is, a fundamental aspect of magnetism
like imagine if we called things falling from the sky the "Newton Effect" instead of just gravity, and advertised scales for measuring things as using "advanced NE technology." that's what calling things the Hall Effect is like imho

@nprofile…ucsf I mean, it's important to remember that the bots are intentionally making bad moves since, if they chose the best move according to stockfish, they'd just beat human players every time
it might be that they're choosing, say, the Nth worst move according to stockfish, and when you get past a certain point in the endgame there are less than N decent moves, and the moves chosen by the bots thus always end up as terrible self-sacrificing moves
of course, chess.com's code is all closed, so, I can't really know what they're doing here, but maybe if the strategy is actually this simple you could test it, since stockfish is open source

@npub17nm…dm57 my main issue is that the places where it's good are what I consider bare minimum requirements for any app like it, and the places that are bad almost make it worse than a generic markdown editor
like, they have this entire explanation in their help docs where they talk about how their wikilink syntax is better than regular markdown links because you don't need to URL-encode them when… markdown links don't need URL encoding? that's a requirement they made up because their implementation is non-compliant. they then say "if you care about interoperability" (read: we don't) then you can disable them, and it's like
you shouldn't just make up custom bad syntax because you failed to do the bare minimum of reading the fucking spec
paired with basic markdown syntax features being broken (like link references) I genuinely am considering finding another markdown editor and just using that

so, fun fact, the full name of MRI is NMRI, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, and it's the same NMR that chemists use to get a better idea of the molecular structure of things
but the N got cut off from the name because people were terrified of nuclear technology at the time even though it's completely unrelated to nuclear fission
also kinda explains a bit more why human MRI scans require so much extra software to get a good reading, since you're effectively just measuring the molecular structure of everything in an area of the body at once and it's really hard to sift through the noise in that to figure out what you actually care about
it's nuclear magnetic resonance because you're literally measuring how much the nuclei of various atoms react to a fucking massive magnetic field, and it can tell you stuff about even the structure of relatively complex molecules because, as you'd expect, the position of atoms relative to each other can dramatically change the results

each Switch cartridge contains a unique certificate to verify its uniqueness, and this is used during online play and for other situations like redeeming points for the eshop
people have been able to copy these certificates from cartridges for a while now, but because no one had the ability to actually use them, there hasn't been an incentive to do so
now, there is hardware that is cheaper than the used price of most games to emulate an exact copy of a cartridge, meaning that scalpers are highly incentivised to either dump a game and return it, or sell dumped copies of a game secondhand
in both cases, Nintendo can and will notice that multiple copies of a cartridge are being used online, which could be used to either ban specifically that cartridge or any system using it that isn't permanently offline
returns for opened games have already not really been allowed due to the eshop points thing, but now more than ever, this is going to make selling and buying used games less viable and potentially risky

I have glass jars with silicone seals and my earl grey still smells as pungent as when I bought it, compared to when it's just left in the opened tin and loses its smell almost within a few days

extracting this bit from another unrelated post:
like, one of the reason why people (read: oppressed folks) seem to fight so strongly and forcefully for things is because like. we are so used to being completely ignored. it's tiring to go through the same stages of speaking nice at first, then progressively less nice until you find the right level of firmness that's required to get someone to actually listen to you.
I know because I've done this. back when I was at university, I went to physically sit down with loads of different people to ensure that they were doing things correctly, with trans folks in mind, ensuring that they were actually using people's preferred names instead of their legal names in the university systems. it was fucking exhausting, because I would do this, and then myself and others would be invited to meetings where people show up with big slides and powerpoints about these cool new ideas they have that showed they didn't even fucking listen to us. at one point, they claimed that they needed to add a profanity filter before they could let anyone change their preferred name in the system, because apparently, letting people naturally face the consequences of naming themselves "fucknut johnson" was worse than trans people being treated respectfully
so, if you're at this point and just fucking tired of dealing with the bullshit and want to get your point across, it feels like you approach every situation with full body armour and a battleaxe to just talk things out, and it sets people off. like, woah, calm down, why are you so uptight about this?
because I know otherwise you won't fucking listen to me. and sure, maybe I'm being too strong for you specifically, but I don't know that until I try, and quite frankly, I'm done fiddling with people's attention spans until they listen and will instead just slam my fists on the desk in front of them immediately. gets their attention.
I don't like showing up to situations like this, but at a certain point I have to, because I have tried the nice option and it has failed me every single time. so, if you don't like it, consider how many times the nice option has worked for you and people like you, and think about that instead

the biggest concern with mining on earth is that people are exploiting the people doing the mining and we're using them at an unreasonable rate, not nearly as much that we're super low on said resources and have to look elsewhere
