Did some further experiments in #Resin3DPrinting today, large and small! Nearly succeeded: the spill-proof cup ended up with this weird seam-like artifact, whereas the inkwell lid has an ugly 'lip' on its lid. I guess I still have a lot to learn...

@npub12at…me5y For those about to yell at me: I wear a respirator when handling resin, but because I thought it was just water condensation, and I'd just drained the vat _and_ swapped FEPs, I felt I didn't need one to handle removing it.

@npub12at…me5y For reference: ambient air temperature outside the enclosure never exceeded 25C, humidity was high (between 60-80% relative, if not more), the resin itself probably got into high-30s C at the most. Prints ran for varying durations, longest being about 12 hours, with 4s exposures, with at least 3s delays in-between each 'shot', through likely longer due to lifts and retractions.
Needless to say folks, _this_ is why you need an MSDS!

Progress on my #MiniaturePainting competition piece. Priming is an important step, especially for resin minis. Unfortunately this uncovered stress lines on the base (because I am bad at supporting), but hopefully painting will hide them.

One cute capability that PrusaSlicer gives you for #Miniatures #Resin3DPrinting that its competitors lack: negative modifiers. Why is this useful? Consider the classic problem of scenic bases and fitting minis on them. With negative volumes, this is trivial: import your base, import your mini, merge, position, turn one into a negative volume, win.

@npub1yjd…pvka 40K as a setting in general makes very little sense upon any kind of scrutiny. It's both its greatest strength (essentially the entire setting is an unreliable narrator so you can pick whichever bits you like and they'll probably be justifiable) and greatest weakness (when _anything_ is viable, _nothing_ is canon).
Heck, one of the later books makes the assertion the Emperor is whatever the viewer wants him to be, because their mind fills in the details. Convincingly, too.

@npub1tc8…jhyu Even if you _do_ have the skills to make such adjustments (and resupport the result), it's not always practical. The hawk mini from Ghamak I linked lower in the thread is a great example: even if you cut away the rock, you'll have to re-sculpt half of the tail or it'll look weird. This is definitely not practical, even if you can Blender, since that's... the whole reason you _paid for a model_.

One thing I really wish sculptors of printable minis understood: do not assume how the model is going to be based. This covers ground ranging from 'do not use tactical rocks' all the way to 'do not embed your model into its base topper'.
The reason for this is that I might want to base the model very differently to you, because it matches with the rest of my minis, or that I like a different base more. Do not make this choice for me.

While we're on the subject of Tridents: if you plan to build one, there are two upgrades you _must_ do. One are the BFIs, because the stock Trident idlers are not only hard to assemble, they're so badly designed that they're almost _certain_ to break on you after a while. The other is the inverted electronics mod, as it allows you to do electronics work without having to flip your (large, heavy and awkward) printer over. 52/n

One interesting thing I had to un-learn (or I guess learn) when practicing supporting resin prints is that resin supports care about _islands_, rather than overhangs or bridges. An island is an overhang that isn't connected to anything in the same layer. FDM supports have to take care of islands as well, but only insofar as they're overhangs; resin prints don't care much for overhangs that _aren't_ islands, or bridges for that matter. 45/n

Now, the _second_ caveat is that if you _do_ need active heating (and some folks living in colder climates easily could, especially if you print in an outdoor, un-insulated structure), not all heaters are made equal. Generally, there are two types of solution peddled to this problem:
1. A chamber heater, that recirculates warm air; and
2. Something that heats the vat itself.
In general, you should prefer the second option, for reasons of efficiency. 33/n

The solution to this problem is a lightproof cover. You can buy these, but realistically, as long as it's made of a dark material (black ideally) and doesn't leak light, and you're handy with anything ranging from black cloth to spray-painted wood, it's not difficult to make your own. In addition to the usual stuff people recommend getting for a resin printing setup, consider this if you're not in a completely lightproof area. 27/n

Decided to try some more of the newly-discovered fluid watercolour shading trick. I used a different colour this time (sepia), and diluted it 50-50 with water. This is the outcome after some damp cotton bud action. _Particularly_ like what happened on the white flowers.

One suggestion I've heard is to make simple clones, which _works_, but then I lose the ability to have the part look like anything but one solid colour. Not only is this harder to look at, it can potentially be confusing, such as when you import models of PCBs with colour-coding on its connectors, say.

One major thing that bothers me about #FreeCAD is that _any_ work with nontrivial STEP imports slows it to an absolute crawl. It's not like I'm even on a particularly weedy system: I have a Ryzen 9 5900X and 32GiB of RAM at the highest clock speed it can handle, in a dual-channel configuration. Loading in one STEP file with a half-dozen parts shouldn't cause noticeable lag when trying to do anything, but it does, and only gets worse.

In current #FreeCAD, I can't seem to choose the origin, or any axes, as targets for constraints anymore. For example, I want to constraint a point as coincident to the origin, but if I try to select the origin when sketching, I can't.
Am I missing something here?

@npub1suk…9atk Silk PLAs are mostly TPU blends, which makes them somewhat prone to taking on water. Drying is recommended, but be careful with drying temperatures, since they're still PLA.

You could probably use a spraycan varnish instead of an airbrush one too.

1. Import STEP file of a 2040 extrusion.
2. Scale it to right length.
3. Make a part I can use in an assembly.

Just had a PolyMax PC part on Catboat-1 crack (one of the bed corner mounts). Not too hard to reprint and replace, but bodes quite poorly.
Don't be me, don't use PC for printer parts. Even if it's blended for impact resistance.

Catboat-1 can hit 25 VF with PETG. That's _definitely_ a personal record: the closest I've gotten was 15, and that's on the XPlus-3.

@npub180d…yqvk PETG is pretty bad for this use. It doesn't hold detail as well, doesn't glue well with pretty much anything, and doesn't take paint well. If anything, it's worse than PLA.
