One major way bitcoin changed me is that I don't particularly care about a glorious career anymore. All I want now is to have a balanced life, gain more diverse knowledge, and help others. Career pursuit is just one way to do it, but it will create a massive imbalance elsewhere in life.
The downside of this is now I need to redesign my life in a way that makes my 20s and 30s useful, and at the same time not career-centric. A welcome challenge, I guess.

Honestly, it is a Western perspective because only the West and their lackies accept them as facts. There is a totally different version of what happened and why it's happening elsewhere in the world. That's precisely why you got this reaction from me, and will probably continue to get this reaction from this who dont adhere to Western version of the story.
I picked this video not because it's comprehensive, but more because Ilan Pappe is an Israeli history professor and he is telling facts that he researched in Israeli archives. It only tells part of the story, but reality is the struggle started much earlier than 1948. Enjoy:

My impression is that an average Joe Westerner is completely blind to the situation anywhere outside their own area. In concentric circles, the further they are from "home" the less they know about things. This probably applies to many many cultures around the world.
Here is the difference: it's how they feel the gap. MSM is one source, and a hell lot of kool-aid, that's one way. Some call themselves things like rebels and anti-establishmentarians, yet their stubbornness to change the establishment's views is only matched by size of their blind spots.
Most hide behind the guise of "neutrality", "logic", and "science", but they don't see their biases and parrot whatever they hear.
The more I get to know them, the less I understand them. It's wierd. I can't say this about other cultures. And it runs against common sense behind reaching out to people.
People I met from other cultures admit their biases, admit the incompleteness of logic, and submit to the lack of understanding. And by-default they carry an (un)healthy amount of skepticism to whatever media say.

Man, go read some history from a non-biased non-western source. Yeah, sure accuse the Muslims of bias, but ignore your own western biases. Not our problem, as Arabs, that some British foreign minister promised Jewish people our lands, and not our problem Europeans imposed European Jews on us, and surely it is our absolute right to defend our lands.
Yes, we were at a weak spot. But that's the nature of civilization. Having said that, doesn't give the West the right to impose a colonialist project on us.
Bible, Torah, or Quran... None of these has anything to do with rights to the land. The right to the land belongs to those who live in it. And in 1917, when Balfour gave is wicked declaration, only 3% of the population were jews; Arab jews mostly at that.
To be sure, the relegiosity of the claim to the land seem to be unique to the Old Testament and maybe the New Testament; I haven't read them fully. The Quran doesn't say anything about Palestine belonging to anyone in particular. It says however that the owners of the land have the right to defend; in coherence to UN rules and much-touted Rules Based Order.
Now, answer me this, why on earth do Israelis have "the right to defend themselves" as an occupier, a century long aggressor, but the occupied people do not share the same right even though, in reality, they are the ones actually defending themselves?
Here is a good start: read the Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe, an Israeli who taught at the Hebrew University (if I'm not mistaken).

It's sad really. I love science, heck I have degree in physics. It's beautiful to understand how the world works. But the more I got into, the more I saw that everyone is just walking around with hats in hand.
How else would you do it though? Patronage from the wealthy or the powerful is a consistent theme ever since science became a thing. Greeks did it, Persians did it, Abbasids did it, and almost everyone did it.

Trump claims to be the master of the art of making deals, but surely the last month his only tactic is making threats; many of which are empty.
If I were Egypt's or Jordan's leadership I'd call the bluff and continue to refuse. That's the better long term strategy for Israel anyway. If they accept more Palestinians, the likelihood of the continuation of the ruling regimes become lower, which, in turn, is a long term threat to Isreal. Bad strategy from Trump, really.

It is sound logic, thanks for sharing. I usually give my btc Zakat in equivalent amount of fiat from my liquidity and give it locally.
But I imagine this could difficult at some point, if btc shoots beyond what I can afford in fiat. That's when I would like to have a direct 2.5% of BTC option simply because off-ramps are harder to deal with than on-ramps.
Secondly, I would love to have the option to distribute some of that wealth to our folks in places like Gaza, Syria, or others. We have a catastrophe in every region. I imagine the needier they are the more-of-a-priority they become.
There's no immediate need, alhamdulillah.

I only got my first bitaxe miner a couple of weeks ago. While I'm still testing the waters with a measly 700 GH/s, I'm interested to grow a bit. I'm not sure I'll ever hit a PH/s, but seems to me there is a doable trek. Also, energy prices where I live are relatively low.
I have three questions:
- at what point it's reasonable to switch from pool mining to solo? Currently with viaBTC, I don't like it, but, again, I'm testing the waters.
- which leads to my second question, what would be a good strategy to pick a pool?
- how do I calculate at what hashrate I should expect a return? Given I know exactly how much energy I'm spending.
I'm thinking out loud here: My end goal is one of two, I have yet to decide:
Either make a profit, or help defending the network; or both. It will depend on how fast I ramp up my hash rate, I guess. Perhaps, break even then solo? Thoughts?
