Word on the storm impact from Helene in west North Carolina is that Internet just doesn't exist there. Every fiber path impacted, miles of fiber path gone, access roads to even start damage assessment are no longer there.
Network Engineers are saying days of work to get satellite trailers and basic e911 service restored. Weeks of work for Internet connectivity that even resembles normal.

After more than a year of exclusively using @npub1hkw…jkge for new projects, I had to go back and install Debian today.
1. I do really miss the textual installer on Debian. So much nicer than Anaconda
2. Holy cow is Debian infrastructure slow. Grabbing the ISO at 20Mbps, and the package repos aren't doing great either.

I've been working in Arista TAC for more than 4 years, so I've seen a lot of customer network configs, and you know, exactly once have I looked at a customer's QoS config and thought "yes, these people understand the concept of QoS and this configuration makes even a tiny bit of sense with respect to improving their quality of service without opening them up to a plethora of other, more painful, issues"
Just buy more bandwidth.

This morning's activity is working my way through the #MicroMirror fleet performing s/centos/almalinux.
Dropping the /centos/ module is freeing up a decent amount of disk space on these nodes, so Alma is picking up eight new mirrors because of it. #Almalinux #Centos

I've started seeing ads for Flex Alerts and how we all need to act to bail out California's rickety ass electrical grid, and I'm really coming to the conclusion "fuck em"

When my parents bought their house, they took Boysenberry cuttings from my grandparents house to start berries all along the back of their house. Growing up I've always enjoyed the jams and pies resulting from those berries.

The #MicroMirror project is a little side project @npub19ky…e2qk and I have been working on for the last two years where we're building very simple, minimalistic Linux download mirrors, and using our contacts in the ISP/service provider industry to scatter shot these tiny Linux mirrors literally everywhere.

Question for people driving electric vehicles: Do you carry a portable Level 2 charger in your car, and if so, what NEMA adapters do you carry with it?
I'm contemplating if it's worth me having something bigger than a NEMA5-20 at the front of my garage for visitors. Can't quite justify installing a fixed Level 2 charger since I don't actually have an EV myself.

I was kind of curious how zero touch installs on FreeBSD compares to kickstart files for Enterprise Linux.
Most of the documentation I can find involves floppies or building custom scripts to run on first boot for the writer's Pentium II servers.
So that was nice. How do any modern users of FreeBSD actually provision new installs.

Is Redhat obligated to accept this pull request just because it's coming from a downstream contributor? No.
Does it always make sense to pull a minor fix into RHEL and risk the possibility of side effects? No.
Should Redhat engineers be pulling in fixes which they fully know won't be pulled into RHEL? Eh.
Does Redhat declining the very first notable contribution to Centos-stream after going scorched earth telling people to contribute to cento-stream have a bad look to it?

Just to recap the latest in the #Redhat RHEL vs downstreams not offering them any value drama:
Redhat publically states that downstream rebuilders offer them no value, and the RHEL community should all be working in the Centos-stream sandbox, because that's where the community is, because it has community right there in the name, and that's where the code fixes can land, and community is only about lines of code in the repo.
@npub1hkw…jkge goes "alright, no value in us being a 1:1 rebuild of RHEL, then we're cutting our own path while being based on Centos-stream, staying ABI compatible with RHEL, but we'll fix our own bugs when we find them"
Alma Linux then finds a CVE in the iperf3 server impacting everyone in the Enterprise Linux 9 ecosystem, so they release the fix for AlmaLinux, and then immediately open pull requests for Fedora and Centos-stream to land the fix upstream. Which would seem to be exactly what Redhat was asking for this whole time.
Redhat's response to the centos-stream pull request? "There is no current customer demand for this fix in RHEL, so we're not interested in this fix"
The astute will notice that the pull request is feeding into centos-stream, and not RHEL. But they're making merge decisions here based on immediate customer demand in RHEL.
So maybe this whole "Centos-stream is the community distro" line was bullshit and it really is just the beta testing ground for RHEL, just like all of us kind of thought it was while getting shouted down by the centos-stream advocates this whole time.
So Redhat is still doing great.

One of my friends gave me a random PoE Ethernet switch he found in an e-waste bin for my birthday.
The four dip switches just evoke more and more questions the longer you think about it, and the datasheet yielded practically zero additional insight on what the switches actually *DO*. 🤔

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, having maker faires back is awesome.
On the other hand, the reason Maker Faire Bay Area was amazing was because it was THE maker Faire that pulled people in from across the globe for the one weekend.
Spreading it across two weekend does allow them to sell more tickets, but it doesn't put all of us making things in the same place on the same weekend. So it'll be nice for locals.

One thing I own which is cool as hell is a vibrating reed based tachometer.
Lots and lots of tiny reeds, each tuned for a specific frequency. Place it on a piece of equipment, and the reeds start to vibrate if they're the same frequency as the equipment.
