The ‘guiding wind’ principle is everywhere.
It stems from core, but fringe, narrative beats which most people probably miss, but it’s used everywhere. It’s even there in lieu of waypoints or ‘GPS’ system.
The idea being that your ancestors are guiding you. It’s not predetermined, it’s your bloodline’s determination.
Every single activity on the map leads to another, you just don’t realise it playing for the first time. That could be another collectible, secret area, gorgeous vista, or ‘chance’ encounter, often punctuated with haiku writing to reflect.

Parallel to this, the team at Sucker Punch took their job so seriously that you’d swear this was made by an all-Japanese team. They collaborated with Japan Studio on this to make it as true to their vision as possible, but it is a through and through western game - perfectly implementing Japanese masters of their art when needed.
In that vein, the team has taken minimalism very seriously. Everything from the UI to the gameplay is imbued with *just enough* everywhere you look.
On the surface you might see a map full of cliched open world activities to complete as a box ticking exercise, but every one is designed to channel you into carefully handcrafted locations, environmental perspectives, excellently written ‘slice of life’ side quests, and increasingly robust challenges to Jin’s core values.

There’s a few points I want to hit on here, and it may be a bit ‘stream of consciousness’. But only part of that is down to ADHD, the rest is because it so seamlessly weaves together philosophy, art, music, storytelling, and gameplay.
Mechanically the game is sound. Some of the best dodge/parry combat in the business. Hitboxes are *tight* and you can even realistically interrupt chained attacks on any enemy which is something I’ve only seen in Monster Hunter before.
These mechanics however change over time. I’m not going to spoil the narrative, but you abilities, Jin Sakai’s personal values, and the overarching story are so tightly connected that it actually warrants playing a second time (not NG+) so that you can see despite your own overall skill increasing, the game is fundamentally a different one from start to finish.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of those games, no, pieces of *art*, that I hold in such high regard I often wonder why everyone isn’t talking about it all the time.
It was released at a time sandwiched between some other higher profile games which I think took some of the limelight away. It was still well received and reviewed highly, but a lot of players and critics alike only scratched the surface of what it was trying to do.
As a game, yes it was good. Excellent even. You hit that new game button and you’re dropped into the thick of in around a second.
Initially it feels stiff and clunky, but by the end you’re left wondering why on earth there aren’t more games like this.

@npub17yf…cuaz I’m more fortunate for now at least, that my size and strength as a competitive power lifter do afford me a lot of leeway if it comes to conflict. In a ‘fair fight’ brawn wins out… but fights are never fair or expected, especially in self defence situations.
I also dress in loose fitting clothes to disguise this fact as when someone wants to prove a point, they beeline for the biggest guy in the room.
And that’s where the other skills come in.
I’ve been in a lot of hostile situations, but it’s only come to CQC twice, and each time it was messy. Everyone’s got a plan until they get punched in the face all that matters then is how you react to being punched in the face, all other bets are off.

@npub17yf…cuaz Also, there’s almost certainly going to be a big uptick in people buying military surplus and tacticool clothing. 99% of it isn’t bulletproof or stab proof, and definitely isn’t blunt force or teargas proof.
The operators we worked with were t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, and trainers/hiking shoes types for a number of reasons.
First, if you have to gear up you’ve failed the former steps above, and are likely outnumbered or outgunned.
Second, it’s far less conspicuous and far less likely for you to be picked up by authorities/others on general appearance.
Lastly and most importantly. To be comfortable, be fast, and blend with a crowd.

Also, and I always raise this… Apple’s commitment to accessibility (and as ever the caveat of “never going far enough” applies) is head and shoulders above everyone else. It’s borderline visionary when it comes to the Apple Watch. I have a colleague that lost the majority of both arms, and can fully interact with the Watch as well as any able bodied person. Combined with their iPhone there’s very little they can’t do, and people can hate Apple all they want, but nobody else comes close on that front, absolutely nobody.

The amount of times I complain about any given software and I get scores of people lining up to use this free piece of software developed by (no doubt respectable and dedicated) volunteers from their bedroom, with no means to sufficiently support or offer any kind of warranty for… but sure, it’s free.
And on the accessibility front it’s probably even worse, to most of these people accessibility is an inconvenience. I get it, accessibility it expensive, and expensive doesn’t get done with no budget… which is why the software recommended can’t possibly be suitable, so stop recommending it.
And the third category of the ‘learn how to use it crew’ - the free software can’t possibly be at fault for usability or standard operating conventions, RTFM.
But somehow, they think they’re coming out looking better for it, like they can somehow judge us for being pragmatic. I want solutions, not DIY - unless I ask for DIY.
The rest of them are generally cool though, and I donate to some great projects… so rough with the smooth I guess.

Not sure where the previous comments about its trustworthiness came from, but they seem pretty unfounded.
It feels like a personal browser of old. Where all your stuff lived. Mail, feeds, decent bookmark management etc. and that’s not something I’ve come across for many years.
Going to switch it up this week and live in it, see how it goes. I’m sure it could do with hardening, and I’ll get to that, but it looks like a solid start.

The concept of respect being ‘earned’ has always bothered me.
It only serves as a weak excuse to treat people poorly until you’ve deemed them ‘good enough’. All sorts of racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and sexism grow from this seed.
I operate on the premise that respect is given until it is lost. And it’s never immediately lost, but eroded after subsequent failings as a human.
It’s easier to say someone hasn’t earned an arbitrary number of imaginary respect points than it is to rationalise why you immediately don’t respect someone.

I think what makes me laugh most about Azure, having been there from the beginning, is that almost everything Microsoft releases is a shortsighted solution to a problem caused by themselves, caused by a solution to a problem that they created.

We can’t talk about the folly of ‘AI’ without mentioning that the market cap of Nvidia went from $2tn in February to over $3tn today, making them the ‘most valuable publicly traded company in the world’
That’s a very precarious position it puts them in for when the bubble starts to destabilise.
Expect AI to be shoehorned into absolutely everything even more than it is today, it’s a matter of survival for these people now.
