Naomi Klein goes into this phenomenon in her book The Shock Doctrine. But if the people are aware and engaged we can use these moments to rebalance. Milton Friedman said "Only a crisis - actual or perceived - produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around."

@npub1e0a…eww0 This may be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but another idea is if you don't want to mute people, but you'd rather if people only replied to ask questions, you could put that in your bio. We love clearly defined boundaries and the autistics in your audience will let newcomers know the rule 😝 This is a very autistic solution though, so YMMV

@npub1e0a…eww0 yeah, we're a lot more comfortable being ourselves on here in my experience though. In part because a large chunk of the open-source community are autistic programmers. So the culture is more reflective of the autistic experience in some ways.

@npub1e0a…eww0 I wonder if the higher proportion of #ActuallyAutistic people on here may be skewing the perception? Bad-faith 'man'splaining is definitely a real problem, but we autistics will do a thing called info-dumping, where we will express everything we know about a topic as a way of showing our interest in it. I've personally experienced having my attempts to connect on a subject be mistaken for intellectual showupmanship. With another autistic, we'll just share facts for hours

@npub189n…satx It's there, but it's broken up by the friends and family members who withdraw our support systems because they're not willing to admit we're in the wrong.
I have lots of rage, but no resources to do anything effective with it other than teaching my kid better.
The downside to holding your racist community accountable, is running the risk of losing your community. And white, urban activists are not good at replacing networks you can rely on when you need practical help
