My sister is still in the hospital. She finally has been seen by an infectious disease doctor, who will look into arranging a home health nurse so she could continue the antibiotic injections at home. I hope that works out. Her husband is still planning to leave Sat. on another international work trip. I'll go if needed.
I watched the whole debate. I can't believe that the election is close when those are the two candidates.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We have another lovely, cool morning. So far the wildfire smoke is staying aloft. Walking the dogs will be very pleasant.
I'm relieved about my sister. She has had two doses of the IV antibiotic and is tolerating it. Now we just hope it's doing its job.
#Today will be pretty typical around here -- walk and train the dogs, pick up groceries, cook, write postcards. But then, the big excitement will be watching the debate!

Joule says, "All this training is giving me gray hair!"
Actually, when I went to spot clean her with the dry shampoo, I accidentally opened the "pour" side of the lid instead of the "shake" side, so I got a LOT of powder on her. I rubbed it in all over her, and after a bit, brushed her and toweled her off. No more smell or goo.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! Today starts a stretch of days with sun, high temps in the 80sF, and lows in the 50s. Nice!
We'll have normal activities #today -- HBOT for my husband, and for me, dog walking and training, bread baking, cooking, and postcard writing.
My container vegetable garden was a bust this summer. I need to try starting some microdwarf tomato seeds and microgreens for fall/winter fresh veggies.

So today is International Vulture Awareness Day. Although we have an abundance of turkey vultures in my neighborhood, I will not inflict a photo on you. I guess vultures are a valuable part of the ecosystem for cleaning up carrion.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We have another lovely, fall-like day. I'm in no rush to get the dogs walked and will start the bread-making first.
My husband's HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) went well yesterday. His plan to destress parking in the ramp worked, as did the nasal spray I'd given him to prevent the sinus pressure that he has sometimes experienced during the "descent" -- the time when pressure is being increased. (1/2)

Good morning, Mastodon friends! My husband just left for his first hyperbaric oxygen therapy session of this set of 20. 😀 He has an idea to make the hospital parking less stressful for himself. If it fails, I'll drive him tomorrow.
We're in for a cool, fall-like day. I'm here for it!
I'm worried about my sister and brother-in-law, both of whom are quite sick. At least he's home instead of in another country as he was when he first got sick a couple weeks ago.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! Eastern IA has another deliciously cool day -- 52F when I got up and headed only for 74F. Strange -- I closed the windows overnight and will open them this afternoon.
Donny seemed to feel good yesterday. I stopped everything except the prescription food -- no new meds, no supplements, no treats. I'm hoping, hoping that will do the trick.
I was on the edge of vertigo yesterday but seem ok this morning. I hope it holds!

Today is the halfway point of my husband's current set of 20 hyperbaric oxygen treatments. He's been enjoying reading a biography of Florence Nightingale as he sits in the pressurized chamber, and he just informed me that she was a childless cat lady. ❤️
I plan to make a pizza today with lots of peppers and onions. 😋

Arggh, Joule is terrified by the very loud concert going on in the park a couple blocks from our house. She wanted to go outside after dinner but turned tail and ran in as soon as we got out the door. There will be fireworks in the same park tomorrow evening, as well as other fireworks within audible distance tonight and Friday night. What a horrid few days for Joule.

We walked only a mile (half his normal distance) since I wanted to make sure Joule got a walk before the rain came in. She and I did get sprinkled on toward the end of her walk, but it felt good -- no wetter than the air but cooler!

I am grateful for our comfortable basement and for the good weather warnings these days. I can't believe that some new houses are being built here without basements. I read yesterday that Iowa has already had 83 tornadoes this spring, and it isn't even tornado season yet. Insurance companies are pulling out of Iowa because storm damage losses are so great. #ClimateChange

Good morning, Mastodon friends! My morning has substantially improved since the tornado warning ended and I could get out of the basement and make coffee! Our location seems fine. We still have a heavy thunderstorm. Donny's hearing loss is a positive at times like this -- he's not bothered at all.
Donny and I have a nosework trial this weekend in Cedar Rapids -- just 25 miles away. Then it wlll be months before there's another in reasonable distance.

I joked to my husband last night that I wouldn't know what to do with myself this morning without having to get him to his hospital appointment at 7:00 -- 20 are done! However, of course I slept until 6:45 without any problem. 😆 Today should be dry and not hot, so I'll try (again!) for an obedience video with Donny. I may take Joule along when I go to Lowe's home store for paint chips. Otherwise there will be normal daily activities.

My favorite walking route with Donny includes a short stretch of bike path through a wooded area. A couple of years ago, a huge tree along the path was struck by lightning and had to be taken down. Someone used logs from it's branches to make groups of animal figures.

Hoo boy, here we go again. I was just hearing on the radio that on Fri. and the weekend, there were 17 tornadoes in IA, including 6 EF3s. Now it starts up again this afternoon/evening, although this time the bigger threats are large hail and high wind. The highest risk again is west of us, but I don't like to see this stuff anywhere!

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We're expecting storms tomorrow through Sun. I'm saving half of my morning quota of coffee for early afternoon in the hope of having enough energy later in the day to make good use of today's pleasant weather.
I'll drop my husband off at the hospital, but our plan is that he'll take the bus home rather than my picking him up. I hope that goes smoothly.

I'll drop him off, then come home and start the bread dough. Nice weather is expected today -- high of 66F! -- but it probably will be too windy to do rally videos.
Having such a nice nosework run with Donny yesterday was an upper. I feel energized to do more with the dogs.

Good evening, Mastodon friends! I hope you've had a good weekend! Donny and I commuted to a nosework trial both Sat. and today. I avoided Interstate 80 and instead took a pleasant rural route. Even though I've taken the huge bridge over the wide Mississippi to cross into Illinois many times, it's always impressive. I messed us up in the ring yesterday, but today we qualified and got 2nd place. More importantly, Donny was having fun -- so I am not retiring him!

I'm expecting pleasant weather today. Tomorrow may be our turn for ugly stuff -- tornadoes, wind, and large hail. Thus, we'll enjoy outdoor activities today and do some storm prep this evening. I'm grateful for our basement.
We're still waiting for the full quote on roof replacement and other home repairs. If we do get a bad storm tomorrow, it's great that it will be before, rather than right after, roof replacement!

I spent the afternoon with my husband in the ER, and he has been admitted to the hospital. The doctors are pretty sure what's going on, and it isn't too scary. I am a bit freaked that, after we have been SO careful and haven't gotten Covid, he now could be exposed in the hospital. He and I were the only people I saw there in masks, and he won't be able to keep his on all the time. Wish us luck that he can get out tomorrow. Joule is looking all over the house for him.

I'll need to bundle the dogs and me up and get their walks done this morning because I have to take the car in for a safety recall at 1:00. I wish my husband would get confident enough that his back is ok that he will be able to take back some errands. Oh well, I'm happy that he's sleeping, sitting, and walking comfortably.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We're looking at a warmish (high of 58F), mostly sunny, and windy day today. I am *still* trying to get a good video of Joule and me running a particular rally course, but today will be too windy -- the signs would blow around. Yesterday Joule was good but I lost track of what to do next when a sign was missing. We'll need 3 qualifying runs on 3 different courses to get the title and move up to the next level.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We'll be back to unseasonably warm weather by afternoon -- high of 70F predicted. I'll walk the dogs this morning before my early-afternoon dental appointment, then train them outdoors when I get home.
My dentist is both a friend and an excellent dentist who takes time to explain everything very well. I'm in my 70s but have never had a cavity! I have other weird dental/periodontal stuff though.

The new craft that I am attempting is painting rocks. I am not an artist like the friends that got me into this, so my plan is to make simple, one-word rocks and to place them where people might need them. This is my first try. I think it will go outside the prison.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! The sun is shining brightly, and I am off to a productive start this morning. Bread is rising, and a new cooking experiment -- making apple butter from applesauce -- is underway. The kitchen smells wonderful!
In honor of Valentine's Day, yesterday I used a different mold from usual to make the dogs' frozen yogurt supplement. I make the yogurt using a dog probiotic as starter, and the dogs love the frozen pieces.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! It was hard to drag myself out of bed this morning, but I did and my day is underway. Coffee is made and partly consumed, dogs have been fed and outed, rain gauge has been checked and report made, and bread is doing its first rise. Thus, it's time to check in with Mastodon and then do my exercises.
Today will be cooler than yesterday but still well above normal with little wind, so walking and outdoor dog training will be great! Have a good #today, all!

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We are at the beginning of a warming trend here in Iowa. It was -8F ( -22C ) when I got up, but it is supposed to get up to 21F ( -6C ) this afternoon. We will do our grocery pickup this afternoon before sleet and freezing rain come in overnight. Then for the next several days, we will have rain along with low temperatures higher than the highs we had over the past week! (1/2)

It's eased out a bit in the 3 hours I've been up, so I'm not too worried. I'll try to walk the dogs outside in a bit. We won't be able to go far at all because, where people haven't cleared their walks, the snow is just too deep -- way over my boots and the dogs' bellies. The dogs will get treadmill exercises again today, and I may walk some laps in the house.
I picked up a grocery order yesterday afternoon. There's bread rising now. We're fine as long as the power stays on. 2/2

Good morning, Mastodon friends! And it's a gray one here. We got another 1.25 inches of snow yesterday evening and are looking at another major snowstorm tonight through Sat. a.m. Then we go into the deep freeze. We have lots of company in the severe weather dept.
The fellow we hire to clear snow came yesterday morning. I did a fair amount of clean-up shoveling after he left, and due to that or something else, my back is bothering again today. 1/2

A year ago I set a goal of walking 1100 miles outdoors with the dogs in 2023. (That was a slight improvement on the 1045 that we'd done in 2022.) We got out this morning before the snow started and got 'er done. Averaging just over 3 miles a day isn't great, but with Donny (dog) and me both being senior citizens, I feel pretty good about it.

Funny how I *wanted* his usual mischievous pestering. I just gave him a normal breakfast -- we'll see what happens. Today's weather looks great -- high in the mid 40s F. I'll aim for longer walks since there's lots of rain forecast for later in the week.

Today our town had its winter festivities. Among them was an ice carving demonstration outside city hall. This evening features the "Aisle of Lights," in which residents, businesses, and city workers place luminaria along the city streets. The third photo shows a few of the luminaria as well as the amazing decorations in two yards across the street from our house.
