All forms of public transport cost much more, housing costs risen because of sell off (& non replacement) of council homes. Whilst libraries, family support, school, and health services cut back or disbanded. To subsidise a few megomillionaires and global corporation's.
Perhaps taxing all income the same, and removing subsidy to large non-Dom corps should be a start.

Almost all NHS staff (& all the professionals) start with degree courses on which an apprenticeship is served, so very intelligent to start off with. Funny how most in decision making positions lack the worked experience bit, some the degree too.
Running a health service is about effectiveness not efficiency under ideal conditions!

@npub1g0t…tvm4 I think it was described to me in my public health training as "The tradegy of the Commons" perhaps sectors should face a tax surcharge, equal to bonus pool plus dividend pool, unless they collectively fund, and organise training courses for all their employees. (Including CEO!)
If the state has to fund them, then surely they should contribute the costs. Of course SME would probably pay nothing by this mechanism as they tend to have limited shareholder dividends and bonuses!

The description I like is it's like basing you economic future on taking in your neighbours' washing. They may get a washing machine, and if things get tight stop using you.
Great if you have alternative income, but not so good if it's your only one.

On the basis that demand for steel is still growing and production of Iron is being maintained, it seems despite all the claims about reuse which I support, there is still a need to convert to a non carbon reduction process to convert rust, in its many forms, to iron for subsequent conversion to steel.

It appears for men the rate of improvement changed in 1999 when its improvement sped up
in 2012 it virtually stopped rising
in 2018 it started falling.
The picture for women is similar but four change points.
Improvement slowed first in 1993
Improved to catch up in 1999
Stopped rising in 2012
Fell from 2018
NB UK life expectancy fell from 2018, before COVID, though that clearly didn't help!

Imagine investigating a bank for involvement in tax fraud... Checking every account meticulously. @npub1g0t…tvm4 yes but as the home solar systems have demonstrated, multiple very small generators can amount to impressive reductions in central requirements. Generators aren't keen as their income stream shrinks.
There are also reduced transmission losses, reducing demand even more....
With some form of local storage (submarine batteries?) this base load contribution could become very important.

Interesting that they have not promoted regenerative farming as a way to reduce UK carbon deficit. That c would rely on small farms, rather than big agribusiness. So administratively harder, but would help restore remote localities, as they would have a reason to be there, to service the local farms. It would also reverse the myth that UK is overcrowded as small towns filled.

But such is the nature of the results of arithmetical division. We put all our effort into getting the numerator accurate but often fail to apply as much effort into estimating the denominator. And the cuts to ONS mean We're less certain about where people live, and if they drop the census we will be completely blind.

I personally would prefer it to be paid for by a surcharge on council tax, i.e. a fixed percentage of your total coucill tax. So second home owners pay twice, and if on a local surcharge that extra too. World service returns to the foreign office budget, or better a resurrected DFID.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 I was taught at one of those old fashioned English Public Schools that whilst power and authority flows downwards in any hierarchy, Blame and responsibility always flows upwards and is concentrated as it rises. Hence generals are dismissed if a battle is lost.
I'm Britain today, it seems senior execs think the reverse, blame flows down and power flows up but selectively. Praise and success is due to great "Leadership" but blame is because a lackey failed to do the right thing.

As far as I'm aware Wales is not part of this data sharing exercise, as we have are open clinically led scientific pseudonammised data sharing system that extends far beyond the NHS, with public reps on the ethics oversight group. If true, the budget for road maintenance should rise in proportion to the 4th power of the road load, so that potholes, & puddles were a rarity rather than as now to be expected on every journey. Also whilst holes are unpleasant to care drivers, for other road users, potholes are potentially lethal, pedestrians & cyclists must be better cared for under new highway code.

Selling degrees is their prime business model, imparting knowledge and education does really fit in their world view, keeping people ignorant helps them sell their expertise to lots of people for an exorbitant fee.

Perhaps like in London golden pass taxi journeys could be covered to. Would radically alter transport policy. Might also reduce potholes and other death traps for cyclists...

@npub1g0t…tvm4 my own view, biased as it is, is that PhDs taken immediately after securing bachelor's degrees via the MPhil or equivalent route are both worthless for most individuals and heavily push by Universities as a way for them to screw yet more money out of people. Conversely Masters or even doctorates taken after a period away from academia, invariably seem to be of value to both parties. Perhaps it's the timing that matters, and Unis should stop being rapacious and think long term.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 I'd like to see the house price determined by a fixed formula, based on curtilage, and enclosed floor area. This would help equilibrate house prices across the UK. It would also redistribute wealth away from London and SE. It might also remove concerns about inheritance tax, as estates in SE would loose the house value element. It would also remove the speculative bubble on housing. As the profit from house price inflation would disappear. This inturn would reduce inflation overall.

Small communities based on an accurate version of Dunbar's number, say 500 people, will source food & energy, repair hygiene and primary care locally, with larger communities providing specialist services secondary services such as legal, hospital based services, and post primary education. I'm guessing cities will provide tertiary services within the sovereign city state?

@npub1g0t…tvm4 and the benefits are? I suspect reduced expenditure on healthcare, improved productivity, reduced losses due to petty crime, and improved social mobility and solidarity. So probably pays for itself within a couple of parliamentary terms. But treasury only interested in this year's costs..
Been a problem for a long time, but got worse since GO became chancellor, as from then on UK gov has no long term strategy, except to stay in power and get richer, exemplified by current one.

@npub1pu6…u9fd I think it's a myth created by false assumptions in continuous differential models.
Previously we focused purely on the benefit for the vaccinee. Vaccinia killed people too, but fewer than Variola.
Yet There were large queues for in the Rhondda/Cardiff outbreak. To protect the vulnerable, everyone! The threshold for smallpox is much much lower with smallpox, but nowhere achieved herd immunity as the Cardiff outbreak showed.
Herd immunity is a dangerous myth. IMHO.

@npub1pu6…u9fd the use of the term "Herd immunity" first used for lab animals, is a recent phenomenon in immunisation. Prior to that personal benefits were their selling point, the more you protected the smaller the harms of any outbreaks. Elimination relied on isolation and quarantine, and the discrete nature of infection.

@npub1pu6…u9fd The history of compulsory vaccination (against smallpox) in the UK where I am, is that it hindered control not that it enhanced it.
If you can't convince people you're seeing about something else, to protect themselves or their children against fatal consequences, then either you're not very good, or their minds are closed. Most people accept immunisation readily.
I'm unconvinced by the herd immunity arguments. The assumptions underlying the model are all false.

@npub1pu6…u9fd I'm personally rather agin compulsory immunisation. It permits natural selection, if immunisation is freely available to all. The immunised are protected, the unimunised are not then we let nature take its course. Gradually we find the stock of Ill informed people shrinks. When I worked in outbreaks never found any difficulty in getting volunteers to be jabbed. The problem was our paymasters wanted to keep costs down, so demanded a limit..

My Welsh daughter had to do something like that to get hers and she's married to a US born citizen and has had 2 children who are eligible to stand for US president....

@npub15zu…s7lx the most pragmatic approach would be to set the building regs to carbon zero standard. Then subsidise upgrading existing property whilst raising income tax on the top 2% to pay for it, by closing the loopholes left in to let the Cabinet keep their wealth intact.
It would also help the economy drastically, by bottom end jobs, plus inspectors to check work done right. That would require improving rules for building control, and inspections. We know self cert lets faults through.

Maintaining things in status quo requires a lot of resources. Living things spend a lot of energy on homeostasis, so when overwhelmed collapse suddenly. If you have had the misfortune to watch someone with bacterial meningitis you will know what I mean, they're unwell but ok, then minutes later they are at deaths door.
All should read Richard Cook's papers to see how linear thinking mucks up healthcare. Summary in his 1998 paper;

The idea that the rich should be taxed less to enhance their rewards is crazy as the evidence is that less inequity benefits all in society, including the richest! But It does help the poorest most.
Which seems fair to me. The rich still do better, than they do now, just that the poor catch up quite a lot more.

A bit like the Medicines agency which was based on our own regulator, but had all our most experienced people. What a sad loss of expertise, for a nation claiming to interested in being at the forefront of science and it's application.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 what really worries me is what will happen when my children reach my age! By that stage many people will get a pay rise on retirement! Whilst I'm grateful for the 8% rise I'm likely to recieve, we do need to have a serious discussion about pensions. The current system both state, pure Ponzi, and private/occupational speculative and as many have discovered very definately over sold, leaving many feeling defrauded.

Those of us who remember 1990 will recall that the then health secretary, a certain Kenneth Clarke, stated that the RAWP arrangements & the MPC which ensured equity in GP distribution, were old fashioned, and the market would ensure both fair distribution of funds and staff. So this trend has a very long history. it has been deliberate. The pity is that HMLO when in power never took the chance to reverse this, & undid the Grober improvements of Public Health to repeat the error.
