alternative model would be donate to after reading.
Let's say, easy one click method (plus secure confirmation / MFA), to donate 0.01€ to 0.10€ post reading.
Or, even 1€ if it's some educational material, that saved lots of time (i.e. SW development guides).
But, then there's a problem, that people (consumers) often don't want to pay for things, and want them for free. So, they would never donate. Lots of people I personally know, pirates software.

Paying per article in advance, would probably lead to misleading titles or intro(a). Click baits.
When buying a newspaper in a shop, I can peek at the content, and then buy it.
So, the good model would be to allow peaking before buying. But, then how one enables to peek at any part of article, without allowing to read it fully for free. People do so in shops with newspapers, too. But, there's it's obvious. On internet it's anonymous.

the problem with 5-10 free articles is anonymous browsing, and other methods, that can reset the counter.
I don't like paywalls, or monthly fees either.
Besides paying for unknown content in advance, it also locks people to single platform, because noone would like to pay monthly fee for multiple sites.
Though, one can change platform from time to time, I do so for Netflix and others. But, this might not be ok for news, where one wants latest news.

what exactly is the terrible experience with JRE / JDK?
Stability and reliability issues?
Or, very slow startup, and huge memory consumption for even small trivial apps?
For the latter, #GraalVM can help by compiling it to native executable . Unfortunately, it's usually not packaged this way in majority of distros / packages.
And,... overuse of frameworks, that are big and slow to initialize. But, that's implementation problem.

However, the composition seems a bit off to me. The middle bush is too much centered. Maybe would be better if it was positioned to left third (or quarter) to "open up" the center.

I'm against runtime rendering from 3rd party dependencies, as I've met lots of sites with broken embeddings.
But, some structured copy-based embedding, maybe with something based on https://schema.org/ could do the job.
Whether Markdown/RST with metadata provided in JSON-LD, or limited HTML with metadata embedded in Microdata.
Though, separated quote and metadata would provide the flexibility of rendering (aligning authors, timestamps,...).

well, JPEG, PNG and other image formats are the only well adopted standards, that:
... result in precise reproduction of original content (with original visual representation) ...
... are platform agnostic and software independent ...
... data is preserved for long, stands the test of time ...
Besides plain text, I'm not aware of a good meaning-embed rich-text preservation standard for snippet exchange.

which is not what #Microsoft is doing.
MS tries to lock people into their own proprietary formats.
People can't switch away from it easily - ramped up switching costs.
Pure monopolistic practices.

the biggest pain are proprietary formats,...
I don't mind using proprietary software as long as it's fully compatible with open-source software:
- produced data are in (file) format, that can be used without issues with FOSS,
- no proprietary API is used for integrations.
I.e. I don't mind (to buy) proprietary software, that is an interchangeable tool, into which I am not locked-in, and I can seamlessly switch it with a different one if I wanted/needed.
