I found out about this while learning about statistics 11y ago as part of a finance certification.
The 5% of surveys with wrong results among a group of surveys with a 95% confidence level are more likely to be published than the other 95%. That’s because among those 95%, you find mostly ‘inconclusive’ stuff which is not interesting, specially not to the people who financed those surveys.
Who cares if a survey is wrong when the result is exciting and has a 95% confidence level?

Imagine someone not familiar with this space coming to a Bitcoin conference for the first time.
They just wanted to learn how to pay with bitcoin but instead someone explains why they should replace their entire central heating system with a mining rig.
Some sessions say “here is why ETFs are great”, other sessions “Stay away from ETFs, here is a summary of all self-custody techniques”.
They walk around and see industrial ASIC containers next to giant NFT fluffy toys. There are sessions about government debt, human rights activism, abusive state surveillance, then on the same stage people with wizard hats talk about minting overpriced frog jpegs with “inscriptions” and “runes” .
Eventually they run away before going insane.

What's interesting with this board game is that:
- No two editions have the same rule set.
- The printed rule set is always missing from the box.
- Everyone thinks their version of the rules is the right one.
Players don’t argue too much though because after all it’s only a game. Somehow there is an emerging consensus on what the rules should be and all players eventually more or less agree.
Hours of fun!
Now imagine a version of the game where one of the players has special advantages:
- They can use and spend unlimited amount of money from the bank with no penalty.
- If the box runs out of paper notes, they just make up more money by writing entries on a ledger they control.
- If some other player’s bankruptcy threaten to affect the whole game, they bail them out thanks to access to unlimited money.
- They can change the rules as they see fit during the game.
- They can send other players to prison if they decide they’re in breach of a rule they changed.
- And if they’re still losing despite all those advantages, they can seize other players’ property or reset the whole game by making up some reason why players should fight one another.
Sounds like a very crap version of Monopoly. Would you play it?

Gresham’s law: people tend to spend weaker money and hoard the harder money.
➡️ Therefore the harder money is not much used as a means of payment. However it is used for savings.
Thiers’ law: at one point, weaker money is losing its purchasing power so fast that merchants stop accepting it and prefer being paid with harder money.
➡️ Harder money then replaces weaker money as a means of payment.
