hallucinations are still a big issue for sure. one thing I've hoped LLMs could do would be to help people learn obscure/dying languages but trying to learn Irish with them just makes me wonder if I'm actually even learning the real language because it's easy to get them to contradict themselves about what is and isn't a valid grammatical construction etc.

I find them most useful for coding and for giving me information about topics which are in the medium zone of sufficiently complex/obscure that it's a lot faster than a conventional search engine would be, but not so obscure that they're extremely unreliable (which they still are for very niche things)

back in the mid-to-late 2010s I made three very controversial AI predictions: that level 5 self driving would happen in the early 2020s, that 90%+ of programming jobs would be automated by 2030, and that language models would be able to pass the turing test without needing true AGI. a success rate of 2/3 isnt perfect but I feel proud for having foreseen the progress of LLM-like stuff before even GPT-2 came out

and more generally, it's only *very* recently that Nazism is starting to recede from its status as the archetypal, ne plus ultra of evil, the yardstick by which every other bad government is measured. no other ideology or government ever got that cultural position, and while the Nazis certainly did quite a lot to earn their status as the archvillains of history there were many other awful regimes too which never got treated the same way

I think WWII was a more direct influence on all the things I mentioned than just "good vs. evil". George Lucas specifically designed the rebels in Star Wars to look like American GIs and the Empire to look like the Nazis. Harry Potter had Voldemort basically motivated by fantasy Nazism with mudbloods filling the role of Jews. Indiana Jones and Captain America both have explicitly Nazi villains. Lord of the Rings is not as directly WWII influenced, and certainly WWI was an influence on it too. but it was not "preempting" WWII--Tolkien didn't finish it until 1949 and it wasn't published until the 50s, and even when he started in 1937 it was obvious that war was coming---war had already broken out in China and Spain, and France and the USSR were already rearming

oh I know, all my grandparents remember WWII. but it seems to be a cultural touchstone for everything for young people too. I'm thinking of how it seems like all the most culturally prominent fictional conflicts are some variation on WWII

if you run (or know the person who runs) the server for your matrix account you could try to scrape that. but it will be a nontrivial programing challenge for sure
