@npub17lg…9uux this whole thing started with a reporter misunderstanding that toothbrushes was an ad absurdum example of anything internet connected. It’s sort of like being forced to test if, by giving Grandma wheels, she would become a cart.
Even if there were WiFi toothbrushes, would there be so many of them using connectivity to create a massive botnet? Probably not.

I have a ton of respect for Brett Callow and Allan Liska - both quoted here by Emsisoft as pro-banning ransomware payments, but I'm extremely skeptical that it would be successful.
Consider a few things:
1) The cost to deploy ransomware is extremely low. And there's little downside to infecting someone who doesn't pay. As long as enough people pay to sustain the crime, there's no incentive not to infect everybody.

If Mastodon is successful, we’ll see corporate involvement in a number of ways. Ads on feature-rich clients, PBS-like “brought to you by…” toots from instance admins, corporations offering assistance to open source projects etc.
If we’re really successful, I also wouldn’t be shocked if some instances were ad supported.
Money is a leverageable resource. The point is that fedi gives consumers choices.

Given the federated nature of the fediverse, part of this is going to be dependent on instances monitoring their own content and defederating those who don't.
I'm interested to see what happens when one of the instances that's too big to defederate doesn't do as good of a job handling spam as .social.
