This is an #earlymodern advice (from Athanasius Kircher), on how to and when to use your private #dragon to make an impression. This is just a reminder that, in 1631, Robert Barker in London misprinted a famous line of the Holy Bible, namely „Thou shalt commit adultery“.

And this happens when fingers that were used to hold down a book's page to be scanned were captured, and a software "repairs" this space automatically afterwards. In short: the scanned image is corrected by filling the problematic space with new content. In this case, this filling didn't fit too well: you see a "en=" text part from a different print, and some very bad pixel space. Welcome to the complex digital narrative of old printed books.

Also known as "Kemper Werth" (also as Schänzchen) this promontory in the Rhine at the mouth of the River Sieg played an important part in the wartime news flows and propaganda during the military campaigns.
The Protestant island you see on the image had a fort and was situated among territories of the Catholic League. It's name was: Pfaffenmütz (priest's cap).
In a nutshell, the big Catholic pair of glasses is talking to the small Protestant pair of glasses: you better surrender.

The broadside tells a complex story with lots of references and details, but the small pair of glasses on the right needs attention. The "Pfaffen Brill" refers to 2 things: A special pair of glasses (in German #Brille) for priests and pastors is mocking the religious dynamics of the #Thirtyyearswar.
Also, "Pfaffen Brill" refers to the contemporary fortification "Pfaffenmütze" - an insular fortification at the river Rhine, near #Bonn, which was occupied by Protestant Dutch troops in 1620.

The giant pair of glasses is easy to spot in the image part of the print, and represents the city of #Prague and the Catholic party of the contemporary conflict. The giant pair of glasses is used as a visual guide to look into Prague, its fate in 1621, and the then victorious Catholics.

Oops. Someone cut out the coat of arms of Cardinal Johannes de Turrecremata.
The Cardinal lived from 1388–1468 AD, and was, among other things, the owner of a manuscript library. And parts of this library found its way eventually into the Vatican. And here, someone disagreed with Johannes de Turrecremata, and neatly cut out his coat of arms making it a cardinal's coat of arms devastation. A recognizable hole in the page was a message: you are erased from history, a gap.

Here is a small printed "s" waiting to become an illuminated initial in a print from 1503. The small "s" indicates: please include a colored big "S" after the print run. The reason for this: early printed books in Europe, around 1500, kept this illuminating tradition from the manuscript age - the book makers imitated the layout rules of scribal handwriting for decades.
